Ted is who ruined wrestling for me. I got to meet him backstage at a local event when I was maybe four or five and he couldn't have been nicer and more comforting. Been a fan of good heels ever since.

@@fernicusmaximus9282 I can't speak for anyone else, but I perceived the comment to mean that the suspension of disbelief was gone. Meeting the bad guy who turns out to be a nice guy, even to a 4 year old, likely insinuated that wrestling may be fake. I think 'ruined' was more tongue in cheek.

@@fernicusmaximus9282 Especially back in those days where kayfabe was protected and kids immediately believed in the wrestling characters to be true, that guy immediately thought Ted Dibiase was going to be a natural jerk- especially when, as a kid, he probably spent most of his time booing Dibiase because he was "the bad guy."
And then he meets the man outside the ring, and it turns out he's nothing like what he expected. That's what he meant by "ruined" in that from that day forth, things weren't what he initially believed it to be.

Greatest moment with my son, there was a hockey game and before and after the game there was a legends of wrestling event going on. My boy was 7 years old just becoming a fan and the guys from wrestling at the event were Dusty Rhodes, Ted Dibiase and Brutus The Barber Beefcake. Before the hockey game my son and I waiting in line to get autographs and once at their table Ted took a liking to my son and talked with him about wrestling for what seemed like 10 minutes. Such a generous man with his time and he knew he was holding up the line but that was around 15 years ago and to this day my son has never forgotten that moment.

Like he probably saw part of himself in Hulk Hogan, the big patriotic hero, or in Stone Cold, since he grew up in a trailer park, even probably a little bit in Golddust, which represents his desire to be a TV star rather than a wrestling promoter.
