It's a shame really that whoever it was decided to use auto tune. I don't believe it was David's choice to auto tune, but I could be totally wrong about that.
It seemed even alot of Disturbed fans were accusing the band of auto-tuning it up. So David wanted to perform it live as soon as possible. He also said that he had a cold during this performance. Which is so badass and fearless thing to have done!
I just came across this. I have performed with opera companies for over 20 years. I, like you, was convinced he is a baritone until I heard how easily he was hitting those A4's. Every time I hear this version I get chills up and and down my spine. It is genius! David Draiman's voice is genius! I LOATHE heavy metal! I went to a live concert just to hear this song, and it is even more captivating live. What was amazing, this entire crowd of heavy metal kids were crying during this song - they were joining in at the top of their voices. Simon and Garfunkel should feel proud. This version is almost as iconic.
Paul Simon is alive and well.. don't kill him yet pls. furthermore he sent an e-mail to Dramian praising this performance and even having some online exchanges about it over facebook.
I cannot get enough of this performance by David Draiman and Disturbed. Don't know how I missed your reaction video--I've been tracking them down. I remember the first time "Sound of Silence"--the original by Simon and Garfunkel--played on WLS Radio in Chicago. I cried. And I guess everyone else felt the same, because the station's switchboard was overwhelmed with callers begging them to play it again. To come back more than 50 years later and hear a version that is so different but that hits me as hard as the iconic original did is magic. Makes me thankful to be alive! And you picked the right video to react to--this live performance rather than the official video (though it's well worth watching). Thank you for commenting, and for knowing when to be quiet and just listen (at the end).
As a Disturbed fan that was me too. "Sit tight Carl, you ain't heard the half of David Draiman yet" :D Love his vocal control. It's kind of like he doesn't just have one pretty great voice, but two. And he juggles them to great effect.
I have never heard this singer before most likely because I'm in my late 60s. This gentleman brings tears to my eyes when listing to his rendition of this song.
David Dramin ( of DISTURBED) Has one of the most powerful magnificent voices of our time. His voice is a gift of the universe. If you’ve never seen the man perform live do yourself a favor and experience it. In my opinion the entire band is phenomenal!
The S&G original version, had no anger, or power. It was 1960s' flower music- HIPPIE SHIT. Really pretty and soft. I LOVED THIS ONE WAAY BETTER!! BTW~ We sung it in chours. Our music teacher played the piano! To this day, I am still confused about what sung.
Why would it be surprising that a metal band could produce quality music? Technically, metal is harder to produce than most other genres. I.e. it takes more technical skill to produce (not saying the music is better, per se). The only other genre that comes close is probably jazz (which in some cases definitely surpasses metal).
Finally a 'vocal coach' who doesn't apply their own stylistic bias and simply analyzes what is there, instead of saying "he should do this instead" or "I just can't get into it because I like the original". I think there's gotta be a point where a person's singing is so good that criticism would only serve to tarnish the artists vocal emotion. You can analyze... But to advise would be to take away from the singers honest self, which would betray the integrity of what they're singing. Humans are flawed so I like singing when it's a little bit flawed, which is also why I despise the overuse of autotune. I think anyone telling this dude he should have sung parts in a different way are full of themselves, or are nitpicking because it's their job, or just don't understand their own biases.
From big, mellow low notes, to raw, violent top-end POWER, and everything in between. He's absolutely one of those rare vocalists with a huge range, excellent clarity throughout, and ironclad control over ALL of it. Always a treat to listen to him.
THANK YOU! You are the first vocal teacher who recognized that he isn't using auto-tune. He is a classically trained singer. Most of Disturbed stuff is more of a metal variety but as you said he can choose when and how to grit things up. :) His name is David Draiman.
I love Disturbed and David Draiman, and everything this vocal coach has said is correct. But, unfortunately there is a bit of *pitch correction* in this performance, which isn't really the same as autotune. That doesn't mean that he was ever singing off pitch or out of key, because it seemed like he was always on key, but the effect still plays around with things like vibrato. Honestly, it seems like David didn't even know that there was pitch correction on the mic, and at one point he notices it and gives a funny face. Probably just a bad choice from one of the sound guys. Regardless, I think this showcases David's voice amazingly and is one of my favourite live performances of all time. Such an incredibly talented vocalist, and that shows here.
It is possible that I cannot focus on it enough to hear it due to medication but I can believe that their sound guy ALWAYS puts auto-tune on because Conan quite often gets performers on the show who are 'less than perfect' singing live. lol He says he doesn't use it and I can imagine him not being happy if they did it to him. If this is the case then the fact that he pulls off the rest of the song after that without a hitch just goes to show how confident he is in his instrument. Great singer.
i think what we have to be aware of is that in performances like that (on shows that are not staged by the band but by a Host) they do not have a say in what the producer of the show deems necessary for the show. So if that guy thought "lets slap some autotune on it" all they could have done is refuse to sing, if they were made aware of it beforehand.
That is insanely disrespectful of the artists whom they book. It does however sound like the entertainment industry. One more reason to despise almost all of the entertainment business. I am glad that at least artists aren't totally dependent on the industry now. :(
I loved this song as a kid (by S&G), but David gave it a heart. The original is like recounting a strange dream, Disturbed is like a message from God, and you better get it out there. Powerful command of his voice, and a tremendously talented band overall. Orchestra was for the song.
As an atheist myself, I have to say that attitude is what's wrong with the world. I may not believe in any god, but if other people want to believe in a higher power, who am I to tell them not to? They have their own reason to believe as I have my own not to believe. Stop making yourself sound like a self enlightened deuche telling people what they can or cannot believe in. Extremism is what's wrong, be it in religious beliefs are or in any other area, so don't spread stuff like that
@@RB94Productions i mean i want people to realize the truth faster lmao, religions are made to control the masses no idea why not everyone is "WOKE" yet like Sweden is 90% atheist now and they are doing really well as a country rn. So maybe they are doing something right? I'm trying to spread atheism as priests long ago spread other religions. Simply here to help.
@@nikolayvakareev9094 mate, one thing I've learned over the years is people are able to believe in a higher power without believing in the religion itself, I've met people like that, who believe in god but also know the church is only there to, as you stated, control the masses. And I understand your intentions, but you just can't kick the door open and say "stop believing!". This is something that will gradually change in due time, theres no need for fights over mundane stuff as these, just let people be, changes will happen sooner or later.
Look, when the great Paul Simon takes the time to write a letter to David Drayman to congratulate on his performance about HIS OWN song... what is there to add ?... ;) The original is a legendary classic, and I'm willing to bet this cover will become one too.
It definitely says something about the singer when the creator of the song says he loves the remake of the song. Gonna have to look up some of the other songs they've done. Too bad he wasn't around in the early 80s, I can only imagine the impact and influence he would have had on the metal scene back then 🤗
@@Joreel Disturbed has a TON of great (metal) songs. If you're looking for one that's also a bit "lighter", try "The Light" (no pun intended). It's also very much focused on Draiman's vocals, and carries a positive message as a bonus!
David Draiman...a voice to die for. A powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to rasp/distortion and back on a dime. He has a timbre in his voice that I've never heard before.....just hauntingly beautiful tonal properties to it! An awesome talent and obvious training to deliver what he does!! Can sing like an angel or the devil ! Loved your reaction and your take on David's performance. Good job Carl.
Welcome to f**king Goosebumpville my friends. Disturbed's cover on the old Simon and Garfunkle's masterpiece "The sound of Silence" is blowing the original right out of the bloody water. The fealing in the song is right bloody marvelous.
A 1965 song written by Paul Simon re-done 50 years later (2015) by Disturbed - a Hardcore/Heavy Metal band. No one saw this coming, this is absolutely phenomenal... IMO, the best song these past 5 years!! \m/
I have studied voice and classical music for 20 years. Opera snob - yep!!! A friend of mine told me I had to listen to this song. When it was over I just had to sit quiet and let the tears run down my face. There is no way I would ever listen to a heavy metal song. I felt so deeply in love with this interpretation I had to see it live, so I went to a Disturbed. 99% heavy metal, then this song comes on. The entire crowd silenced, cell phone lights were raised, some had lighters, then entire crowd of sweaty gross heavy metal fans joined in unison at the top of their lungs. It was actually quite a spiritual moment. Tears were flowing every where, including mine. In my opinion, this is the most amazing cover of a classic song I have heard. David's voice was just stunning and awe-chilling... and the talent of that heavy metal band is breathtaking...
"the talent of that heavy metal band is breathtaking" While I fully agree that Disturbed is very talented (seen them live twice), to be honest *most* of the top metal bands are ridiculously talented, you simply can't even play the music without years of training and often theory study as well. Yes, the singers are not usually vocally clean, that really would have trouble matching the music to be honest, but metal singers are always powerful singers who know how to bring that high passion and energy that's required to keep pace with the heavy and blistering guitar riffs. Give an honest listen to "Tornado of Souls" by Megadeth, "Practice What You Preach" by Testament, "Into the Mouth of Hell We March" by Trivium, or "Master of Puppets" by Metallica and see if you spot any talent. It's *different* talent than singing Opera, of course, but to me just as cultivated and developed as your favored musical form. Cheers!
Not gonna lie, you come across as incredibly ignorant with this comment. Metal isn't at all what you think it is, clearly. Further more, the fact that you refer to the fans of metal the way that you do, and that you would "Never listen to a heavy metal song", you're just ridiculous. Have you heard of Symphonic Metal? That'd probably be right up your alley. Look up The PHantom of The OPera Live by Nightwish and you'll understand that metal is a very diverse genre of music that you can not judge based on a couple of examples.
If you have ever seen disturbed live his voice is heavenly!!! I know they are a rock/metal band but his voice is so smooth. No matter if he adds the grit and growl of metal or singing like he just did. This is my favorite cover of all time. His voice has made that song much deeper emotionally than it was already. Thank you for doing this cover.
Not a single drop of autotune or doctoring on live versions or the studio version. Sounds exactly the same every time and it blows my mind. David Draiman is a legend.
Indeed, and 99.9% of ppl cant handle that that is the truth. So, for the doubters, heres Draiman explaining how this song was created in the studio. Its a short interview but if you dont believe the man himself (and why wouldn't you?) Just ask him yourself, hes an approachable guy. th-cam.com/video/8JoCUpV3Hgw/w-d-xo.html
CRDN Official I can totally hear crunch in that. The singer is one of them most impressive singers I’ve ever heard but they were correcting on the fly, sorry.
@@wholewheat1 Yeah, because Draiman was unwell and didn't hit the high notes as well as he normally would, the shows producers decided to 'help him out' with a little auto-tune, which I'm sure pissed Draiman off as he despises the use of auto-tune in the music industry.
There is definitely pitch correction occurring; you can hear it really clearly at 2:03 to 2:04 on the word "walked". His tone and pitch shift quickly on that word.
The impression I get, when I hear this guy sing this piece, is that he sat down and picked the song apart to a deeper and deeper level, and then said I'm going to employ this "trick" here, and this vocal inflection there, etc. I also think he did an AMAZING job of it, rendering feelings as well as the lyrics of the song in an almost visceral way. It is SOOOO different from the S&G format of it that I am familiar with, that it is almost a different song. I really enjoyed it and thought it very moving.
They know his name but there have been too many characters on tv (soap operas, no thanks to my sister I know this form growing up) that have that name or very similar. People may know it but not sure if it's correct due to how many times they hear it on tv.
Sunny, pure raw talent. David Draimen is a professionally trained singer who can reproduce that sound and quality without a mic or pa system. It's call pure talent and dedicated training. Jealousy isn't a good color for you.
6:20 Classic David Draiman. If you haven't heard of Disturbed by now, you have to go back to their debut album, Down with the Sickness, amazing stuff, 20 years later and I still crank it when it comes on the radio.
@@thomasoneill4386 he'd be an insensitive judgmental prick that wouldn't appreciate your performance with your tiny violin. So don't waste your time, lol.
C.C C. Me too. I love Disturbed. I want to see one of these voice teachers break down David doing the “oh wah ah ah ah” that he does. Give a bit of insight into how the sound is produced.
@@geministargazer9830 I don't think david even could. All live vids and when I saw them two summers ago it sounds bad live and to high pitch compared to the album. Specifically theoh Wah ah ah
C.C C. Exactly. I laughed when this coach/critic sais he’d never heard David sing. Really?? Go listen to a few songs BEFORE you criticize. His unique style and talent has made him far more successful than any of us will ever be.
Love Chester and Corey. Corey has a better growl but I think David does the softer stuff better. Chester, well he's Chester and unfortunately he isn't with us anymore so I didn't really consider him. Of course when I say this it's completely subjective , and I'm not discrediting the other. Just my opinion.
What is truely impressive about THIS performance that David Draiman had the flu! Also he was trained to be a Cantor, which is why I feel he sounds the same live, as he does recorded.
This is a great reaction video to a great song. I love this version and have seen several reaction videos to it, but you're the only one who actually provided a commentary (and a good one) to the song. Thanks for doing it!
To me, this live version is slightly better than their official studio version. I am 61 years old and while don't remember when Simon and Garfunkel did their original version in 1964 with just Simon's guitar or their record label's version, that unbeknownst to Simon and Garfunkel, added other instruments to it and made a #1 hit out of it. It wasn't until about 1969 or 1970 that I started listening to music and heard the song but it wasn't until I heard Disturbed's version that I really understood the lyrics. Now, I think of the original version as a for telling of what can happen in the future and Disturbed's version as an angry cry telling us that we failed or at least are failing to correct our ways.
This is my favorite cover if all time. David's voice and talent is amazing...breathlessly amazing. Another great song of his is "The Light" - give it a listen. The messages he likes to send with his interpretations are epic, engulfing, deeply heart-felt...❤
I think the best way I can compare this version to S&G's is that S&G were giving us a warning of things to come and Disturbed's version is expressing anger that nobody listened.
Outstanding description; thank you so much for doing this. I remember listening to Disturbed when they first came out, and thinking “there’s no way this guy will have a long singing career singing like that”, but you pointing out that it’s healthy when done as a choice(which, being untrained, I couldn’t tell pick out) explains perfectly why he’s been able to do this for so many years. Fascinating stuff.
As a child, thanks to my mother, I listened to this song sung by Simon and Gafunkel and I always liked this song. I heard this performance a few years ago. And in my humble opinion, it is much better than the original, which is also delicious. Here it is a growing tension from the first notes. A wonderful voice... And a very eloquent title... Great song, brilliant performance. Unfortunately, this song will always be associated with the events of a few years ago, when during a WOSP concert, the mayor of Gdańsk was murdered on stage. This song performed by Disturbed was a tribute from the city's citizens to the president. Great great song. Mind blowing. PS. Sorry for my English :)
This is my favourite version. David sang this when he was sick and had to be carried off afterwards. Paul Simon was 23 when he wrote this song and it is considered a warning to mankind to listen to the pulse of what was ocurring worldwide. David's version is what will happen if we do not heed the original warning. The power and control of his voice comes from him training to be a cantor, and comes from a long line of cantors.
A voice is unique. No one sounds alike. The human ear can distinguish between thousands and thousands of different voices. You can instantly put the face to it. But it is not everybody that has this thing, this certain voice, whatever "that" is that makes a voice attractive. Go about your day and this will bear true, someone will have a voice that is pleasant to you, someone will have an obnoxious voice. Having said that the voice coaches never really delve into that part of voice coaching. To me it is something like a pheromone, and if you don't have "that", no matter how much coaching you have it wont be a huge hit song. This guy here has whatever "that" is and he has paired that coaching or practice or something. To me he nailed that big time. Progression was like nothing I have heard in quite a while.
M Dutchy I guess maybe this is why we have people who aren’t really the best singers but they have such a unique sound to their voice that lots of people like them
People whose voices hit both high and low notes at the same time, that is, those with a fuller sound, are more attractive. Listen to (old-school) radio DJ's and personalities, newscasters, etc. While almost everyone has a multi-tonal voice, often they are still in a fairly narrow range. If possible, check out isolated vocals with a spectrogram, and you can see the range of tones.
Can confirm David Draiman (the singer for Disturbed) was taught how to sing - classical training in fact. He... didn't exactly go in the usual direction with it though. Clearly.
No he was not sick stop lying. He had a vocal cord lesion th-cam.com/video/idFt3y9HlYI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=wrg7jVBST8scRsyC There’s the video of him talking about it
Conan O'Brian said in an interview that by the time the second verse started, every single crew member working backstage had stopped what they were doing and they had all come out to watch this performance like moth's drawn to a light. Conan said that was the first and only time he had ever witnessed that happen during his 20+ year career as a Talk Show Host.
It’s crazy how he sounds better live than in the studio. Usually people sound great in the studio but terrible when live but he’s amazing in both! Especially when this isn’t even the kind of music he usually does
I saw a Disturbed concert way back in the day when they released 10,000 Fists.. so maybe like 2005? One of the most accurate and true to recording live performances I've ever seen to this day. It fucking rocked.
Randomly caught this video and loved it bro, your description of each note.....loved it. And im a HUGE Disturbed fan, so listening to you critique one of my favorite bands in such a positive way made my night! Subscribed!
The original of this song was sung by Simon and Garfunkel, I grew up with that rendition, I am 64. They sang it as a warning, and Disturbed (David) is a heavy metal singer, he is singing like he is telling us to listen. I get cold chills everytime I hear this one. He did an awesome job with this song.
3:10 Totally agree. This song is within my range, yet it's so difficult to sing as free of tension as he does. I often catch myself in my head; "just relaaaaaax you'll sound way better".
Your analysis is spot on. I’ve been singing for decades and most people don’t understand compression and how to get out of a note. Obviously the singer in this video does it perfectly, and as you noted, he also knows when to add the growl and the metal sound for emphasis. Perfect execution and perfect analysis.
Not at all 'raw' years of classical / opera vocal training let's him be specifically 'raw' and color his voice where ever he thinks it serves the performance of a song. This is serious discipline, decades of dedicated training and practice.
My favourite version of this song. Been a fan of disturbed for a whole now. Great to hear an analysis of the style and structure. I be new hear. Thanks chief.
I love listening to the reactions of this performance from people who are not familiar with Disturbed and hearing them comment how metal/rock his voice gets. It makes me giggle every time.
Yes, and no. He's trained as a Cantor / Hazan; a Jewish musician or precentor trained in the vocal arts who helps lead the congregation in songful prayer. They have a separate training regimine from specific classical training, though it contains a lot of the same material / techniques. :)
@@calgmail No I'm dead serious. All you have to do is play ear piercing music, and get someone who can scream at the top of their lungs for extended periods of time, and you have heavy metal. This cover actually showed that he has the talent for real music. Not just teenage noise.

i've seen them live and i can assure you they are just as amazing in person. sounds EXACTLY like what they put on the album and i mean that for every song
Take the live version from Tampere 2015 instead. She's got a lot more comfortable with the older songs since 2013, where she showed that she is the Wonder Woman of Metal by learning a hard setlist in no time. And if you want a good cry, listen to Sleeping Sun from the same night. It's always been beautiful, but it became perfect.
Hey, I’d love you to review/react to a Volbeat song. For my sins I’d never heard of the band until they supported Alter Bridge in London a couple of years ago. The lead vocalist blew me away and I’ve been a huge fan ever since.
I read that he was very ill with the flu during this performance. If you haven't seen the video, please watch it. It is amazing and gives the song meaning that many may not have realized before. It's very beautiful.
He's also classically trained. Yes, he's a metal singer.....but he has great control bc he's classically trained. I love him and his voice. Just saying. His voice is his instrument. Great voice.
Excellent commentary! I love this cover and now even more so with your expertise applied to it. I know it's hard for a vocal coach to react to pre-recorded videos but for your own edification make sure you watch the official video for this. His facial expressions add to the intensity of the growl in his voice and are particularly moving. Gives me goose bumps.
One of the greatest covers ever!!! Love it!!! Nice video and btw.... Talking about singers with ability to sing cleanly or add that grit.... Ummm let's not forget one of the most amazing vocalists ever... Chester Bennington.
One of the best singing critiques of this song on TH-cam, by far! I have a heavy sense that you can take a normal singer to a much higher level with your informed assessment! Two thumbs up five stars!
I'm not sure if anyone had mentioned here that as amazing as this was, he was actually fighting the flu during this performance. He is incredible. I can only imagine what that experience must've been there there in person. I would imagine life changing
I love the gentleness and calmness of the original Simon & Garfunkel version and it's wonderful in it's place. It flows like a gentle stream to me. I love this cover for the intensity of aloneness. The feeling of words mattered more when they are said in silence. That it takes silence to understand the world around you. I feel like the original is experiencing a moment from the outside and this cover is experiencing that moment from the inside.
As a (former) 3 octave bass/baritone, I absolutely love this version! He blends that rich baritone soloist I was trained to be, with that rock n roll karaoke tone I came to love in my 30s.
When he sings in his Christmas he reminds me of the vibration while playing a cello. Also I think the sound system threw off his tone. He was slightly off key
A delightfully analytic and precise precis of a quintessentially quixotic musical interlude.... that completely skips the power and emotional response that his technical perfection is capable of evoking. This is the first video reaction review I've seen where the commentator hasn't reflection any emotion and not just sat back at the end and said .. wow,.... wow.... powerful first. p.s. is "trim" really a vocal technical term? "leans in" ? "compression"...reducing the volume range? "agility and vulnerability in the sound"? "He's giving it a little more aggression there" , "He's going up a bit here.." A master of the obvious and the ambiguous.
What's impressive, is that he produced that voice LIVE. A lot of vocalists can't reproduce the same sound live as they did in studio.
what i find strange is that apparently the producer of the Show thought Disturbed needed a smigeon of Autotune. they really don't.
It's a shame really that whoever it was decided to use auto tune. I don't believe it was David's choice to auto tune, but I could be totally wrong about that.

Absolutely! Couldn't have said it better!
I never get tired of watching and listening to this BAD ASS REMAKE. Gives me chills ever time I hear this. What a awesome voice
He is absolutely using auto tune during this performance. Whether or not he does it on his own I don't know, but this one is not deniable.
I loved this song as a kid (by S&G), but David gave it a heart. The original is like recounting a strange dream, Disturbed is like a message from God, and you better get it out there. Powerful command of his voice, and a tremendously talented band overall. Orchestra was for the song.
Watch the official video!!
God who? Even in the song they sing about the "neone god they madeeee" stop believing in imaginary friends.
It just shows how much the the audience appreciates this song because they didn’t clap until the end of the song
Look, when the great Paul Simon takes the time to write a letter to David Drayman to congratulate on his performance about HIS OWN song... what is there to add ?... ;)
The original is a legendary classic, and I'm willing to bet this cover will become one too.
Draiman*
I think many would already consider it a classic, myself included. It's amazing how Disturbed has matured over the years
+Red King of Sulphur : I can subscribe to that :)
Beautifully said.

CrashFlicks definetly. Their first album was good. But Liberate will always be one of my top songs
The "trim" (I believe you called it) is David Draiman's signature sound. I love it because it's so distinct.
Thank you for a good video.
And he does it so perfectly that he ruin his vocal cords
Welcome to f**king Goosebumpville my friends. Disturbed's cover on the old Simon and Garfunkle's masterpiece "The sound of Silence" is blowing the original right out of the bloody water. The fealing in the song is right bloody marvelous.
A 1965 song written by Paul Simon re-done 50 years later (2015) by Disturbed - a Hardcore/Heavy Metal band. No one saw this coming, this is absolutely phenomenal... IMO, the best song these past 5 years!! \m/
Finally some artist who rockers enjoy! I though all coaches forgot about us...
"the talent of that heavy metal band is breathtaking"
While I fully agree that Disturbed is very talented (seen them live twice), to be honest *most* of the top metal bands are ridiculously talented, you simply can't even play the music without years of training and often theory study as well.
Cheers!
Well this should make you happy to know, he was classically trained in opera before begging his career in metal
i havent shed a tear in a decade.... the emotion came pouring out watching this music video .... shook me to my core...
Look up The PHantom of The OPera Live by Nightwish and you'll understand that metal is a very diverse genre of music that you can not judge based on a couple of examples.
i have read this exact comment on another reaction video 😆
Sitting down too
CRDN Official I can totally hear crunch in that. The singer is one of them most impressive singers I’ve ever heard but they were correcting on the fly, sorry.
@@wholewheat1
Yeah, because Draiman was unwell and didn't hit the high notes as well as he normally would, the shows producers decided to 'help him out' with a little auto-tune, which I'm sure pissed Draiman off as he despises the use of auto-tune in the music industry.
There is definitely pitch correction occurring; you can hear it really clearly at 2:03 to 2:04 on the word "walked". His tone and pitch shift quickly on that word.
Not bad for a Jewish kid from Brooklyn who was originally training to be a Rabbi/Cantor.
Not bad at all. Brooklyn rocks

Who’s that Guy??? 🤣🤣🤣 poor David Draiman, no matter how huge his work or voice no one ever knows his name.
Yeah David is a god yet no one knows his name
They know his name but there have been too many characters on tv (soap operas, no thanks to my sister I know this form growing up) that have that name or very similar. People may know it but not sure if it's correct due to how many times they hear it on tv.
He's the Disturbed Guy, what are you talking about :D
Shannan Simpson a
My guess is: When he sings well, they don't know him.
When he goes "OH-WA-A-A-AH", they go 'I know that guy!'
You just witnessed Pure Raw Talent
Amazingly fully developed raw talent. It takes both to get as good as Draiman is.
you shouldnt call a talent, something that someone had worked their life to develop. this isnt talent, its not a gift. that was pure skill.
ARCTURUS .....with auto tune.
David's talent is not exactly raw. He would be the first to point out it has been helped by decades of vocal training.
Sunny, pure raw talent. David Draimen is a professionally trained singer who can reproduce that sound and quality without a mic or pa system. It's call pure talent and dedicated training. Jealousy isn't a good color for you.
His voice is chunky as hell, I love it. Great analysis too!
6:20 Classic David Draiman. If you haven't heard of Disturbed by now, you have to go back to their debut album, Down with the Sickness, amazing stuff, 20 years later and I still crank it when it comes on the radio.
It should be pointed out that he was very sick when he performed this song on Conan.
No it shouldn't.

You definitely have to listen to more Disturbed songs David Draiman is such a great singer ...my favorite band for about 20 years 😁
C.C C. One of the best bands i have gotten to see live in Chicago IL, was their last performance there before they took their hiatus years ago
Imo David is the best Metal/Rock vocalist of this generation. The guy can do pretty much anything with his voice.
cbinette100 Chester Bennington is imo.
It is between David, Brent Smith (shinedown), and Corey Taylor(Stone Sour and Slipknot)
He isn't bad and does a great job at this song but he isnt the best
M Shadows
Corey Taylor
Howard Jones
Ben Hurley
To name a few
Love Chester and Corey. Corey has a better growl but I think David does the softer stuff better. Chester, well he's Chester and unfortunately he isn't with us anymore so I didn't really consider him. Of course when I say this it's completely subjective , and I'm not discrediting the other. Just my opinion.
This guy is definitely up there, I think you have to throw in Maynard from Tool and The Slipknot singer
This is the VERY FIRST song I ever heard from them, in fact, it was THIS Conan cut!
BLEW MY MIND!
You nailed it John, I've watched many voice coaches "reacts" videos and yours was spot on for sure! Nice job!
What is truely impressive about THIS performance that David Draiman had the flu! Also he was trained to be a Cantor, which is why I feel he sounds the same live, as he does recorded.
Are you saying he was….down with the sickness?
@@turboes29 lol... YES!
I once read a comment from some person who was there that night and I got so envious it was insane.
Their cover of Genesis's Land of Confusion was also awesome. And the singer's name is David Draiman (in case no one already wrote this).
Why does this comment only have 4 likes? This is a perfect analogy.
Because its been said on every video connected to this cover by 100’s of people
LIstening to this version, in 2020, the "neon god" is Donald Trump. It certainly describes his hair and skin coloring.
💯
Outstanding description; thank you so much for doing this. I remember listening to Disturbed when they first came out, and thinking “there’s no way this guy will have a long singing career singing like that”, but you pointing out that it’s healthy when done as a choice(which, being untrained, I couldn’t tell pick out) explains perfectly why he’s been able to do this for so many years.
Fascinating stuff.
He's such a talented vocalist. Love his voice man. Great reaction!
Hes classically trained, mix in god given vocal cords and range and a generational talent is produced.
Huh... better put than I ever did even in my mind but I agree fully. There ARE some voices that completely stand out to the rest and stay with you
M Dutchy I guess maybe this is why we have people who aren’t really the best singers but they have such a unique sound to their voice that lots of people like them
Have you ever listened to Robert Plant and Josh Kiszka theire extremely hard to distingiish
Clearly.
I hear octaves in some of his big, higher notes... just gorgeous! Such control and awareness. He's brilliant!
He was sick with the flu in this performance but still so remarkable! Love David Draiman's voice.
No he was not sick stop lying. He had a vocal cord lesion

The incredibleness of this song is in NOT STOPPING IT!!!!!!!!!!!! The graininess of his voice is a very special talent and needs to come over you!
Best ever live, just like Chester Bennington had a beautiful Live voice R.I.P
Paul Simon said this is your song now , also David was sick that night, that's why he was sitting!
He is classical trained ( and its live ) 😊 .. i adore him
Conan O'Brian said in an interview that by the time the second verse started, every single crew member working backstage had stopped what they were doing and they had all come out to watch this performance like moth's drawn to a light.

Disturbed thats a throw back! Loved this reaction! Love disturbed 💜
I really love watching your reaction videos. Been listening to this cover for a few years now, still love it.
This song gives me the feels
Hits ya straight in the feels
Your analysis is spot on. I’ve been singing for decades and most people don’t understand compression and how to get out of a note. Obviously the singer in this video does it perfectly, and as you noted, he also knows when to add the growl and the metal sound for emphasis. Perfect execution and perfect analysis.
Great reaction video. Would like to see you react to Chester Bennington from linkin park.
Jane Vasquez I want to see him react to chesters 17 second scream
What fantastic grit in his voice with a beautiful balance of smooth resonance.
He's got a panty dropper voice, I love it so much so genuine and raw
Not at all 'raw' years of classical / opera vocal training let's him be specifically 'raw' and color his voice where ever he thinks it serves the performance of a song. This is serious discipline, decades of dedicated training and practice.
I've never heard it described like that, but damn! "Panty dropper voice" is dead on, balls accurate.
😁👍👏❤
Exactly. Liquid chocolate velvet sex. Wish he’d sing this way more often . . .

I love disturbed 😊😊 he's got a great voice but I'm more of a fan of their heavier songs 😊😊 great review btw 👌🏼😊
I love listening to the reactions of this performance from people who are not familiar with Disturbed and hearing them comment how metal/rock his voice gets. It makes me giggle every time.
He was trained in classical music
Yes, and no. He's trained as a Cantor / Hazan; a Jewish musician or precentor trained in the vocal arts who helps lead the congregation in songful prayer. They have a separate training regimine from specific classical training, though it contains a lot of the same material / techniques. :)
He said he wasn't trained classically.
It's very sad that a man of this level of talent chooses to make the style of music that requires no talent.

No I'm dead serious. All you have to do is play ear piercing music, and get someone who can scream at the top of their lungs for extended periods of time, and you have heavy metal.
This cover actually showed that he has the talent for real music. Not just teenage noise.

I have listened to a lot of Disturbed's early CDs. As well as numerous other metal bands for comparison. That is all I've heard from any of them. Just loud, senseless noise. So you can imagine how pleasantly surprised I was to hear them actually singing for a change.
great feedback/reaction!...you've taught me something new about the art of singing...and being a drummer, I totally appreciate how challenging it really is to sing a song with heart & soul while still bringing tears to a listener's eyes....

I really enjoyed the original by S&G but this lead singer brought such powerful vocals to this song. Thank you for professional take on his voice.
David had the flu and a fever of 102 when he preformed this.
I've seen Disturbed three times now and David Draiman has never let me down when it comes to his vocals or performances.
Hey, I’d love you to review/react to a Volbeat song. For my sins I’d never heard of the band until they supported Alter Bridge in London a couple of years ago. The lead vocalist blew me away and I’ve been a huge fan ever since.
Thank you for your honest critique. I love this version of sounds of silence.
Great choice, the lead singer is classically trained.

Cb blows. He was beyond awful Live
Please do more rock and heavy metal reactions
As a (former) 3 octave bass/baritone, I absolutely love this version! He blends that rich baritone soloist I was trained to be, with that rock n roll karaoke tone I came to love in my 30s.
When he sings in his Christmas he reminds me of the vibration while playing a cello. Also I think the sound system threw off his tone. He was slightly off key
Barely noticeable
Actually, he had the flu for this performance
