Newbie mahjongg player here - great video! around 17:40 I see where you’ve got some tiles revealed on racks. (Which I’m assuming was from calling pong and/or kong) Are those (non-joker) tiles “committed” to the specific rack they are on? Follow up question - Is calling chow allowed in Siamese?
Hi Mark. Yes. Once you've exposed a pung (3-tiles) or a kong (4-tiles) and you have placed them on a rack, they must remain there. So make sure, before you expose, that you are placing your exposure on the correct rack. Thanks for the question. Have fun and glad you liked our video!
If during your turn you accidentally expose tiles on the wrong rack, don’t fret you can move them to the other rack…as long as you haven’t discarded. Once you discard your turn is over and your racks and tiles must remain as you placed them.

We're going to play on Wednesday for the first time. Quick question about replacing a joker that your opponent has put up in a mah Jong, can I replace it w/ the correct tile and I take the joker?
Nope. Any Jokers in a Mah Jongg are no longer available to exchange. That’s why you may want to wait before declaring a Mah Jongg. Timing is key and strategic! Have fun!
They help keep track of the various hands you are following. In Siamese you likely have 1 MJ set, so place a Highlighter on that hand. Your 2nd potential MJ is likely changing depending on the tiles you're acquiring. The Highlighters keep track of all the hands you're considering. Super helpful!
@@susiebrusie6838 With 3 or 4 Highlighters placed on your card, helping you keep track of your "potential" Mah Jonggs, how would they know which lines you are playing? You are still undecided. Also, you can place the Highlighters above or below the hand if you're worried. Your exposures during play will let your opponents know what hands you're going for not the Highlighters. There are too many possible combinations for each hand as far as suits and numbers! haha
This video of mom and I playing Siamese Mah Jongg®together is so special but will be invaluable to me one day. She's 83 years old in this video, very sharp and we love playing this more challenging version of Mah Jongg together. We play for hours, This is the quick start way Mom and I play Siamese Mah Jongg. Great video! I want to teach a friend and start playing this. We normally play American 1-2/week but this looks fun!
Thanks! Hope you teach some friends. It's our favorite way to play MJ. Have fun.
