Latency's an important issue with wireless monitors (particularly for focus-pulling), something the vendors compete on. If you ever do another review like this, please include some tests. Just point the transmitting camera at something that's moving and show the receiving monitor in-frame, so the audience can see the motion and the image of it; it doesn't matter that they're close together as latency isn't a function of distance.
@@Alber777 My honest answer is I just don't know. I don't pull focus so have no reference point on how much lag is acceptable. Strangely the monitor has more lag than the app but I don't find that an issue so maybe the app latency is fine. But I wouldn't want to give you bad advice. Maybe someone here can help you more.👍
@@Alber777 as a focus puller that has tested Hollyland’s new 4k system that uses the same tech as this monitor - the 60ms latency is far too much to pull effectively. Decent for a director’s feed but not as a pulling or wireless operating monitor
Anyone here a user of these monitors? I bought 2 of them and one is connected directly via hdmi to the camera - getting a 1080p 24fps signal and then transmitting it to a second M1 monitor. The overall delay between what's happening in front of the camera, and what shows up on the M1, is about 0.5 seconds, which is very high for a focus puller to use. I imagine anything above .2 seconds is entering un-usable territory. This company advertises (aggressively at that) a 0.08 second latency, meaning that what I'm seeing is over 6 times that. Anyone know if I'm doing something wrong?
The problem is that all this YTers who got the unit for free are much to positive. I have one, but the app is useless. The audio is 0.4 second out of sync. And the monitor for a focus puller? A joke. Also you can't switch on the zebra and the focus assist the same time..... And that focus assist? Much to thin. Useless. So the M1 is a nice toy. Not more.
Very interesting system! I'm actually interested in getting a directors monitor and this looks like a great option especailly when pairing it with my ipad
Didn’t know about this particular monitor but I know about Hollyland we use two sets of sender&receivers in our corporate live-streaming setups… I just used it 3h ago to send a copy of the livestream outside the studio to a big tv in the waiting area where the audience got to have snacks … we also have used it during our first conferences since the pandemic with 400-500 people to send the presenter’s PowerPoint preview from the back of the hall/front of house to a tv/monitor on stage. We used to convert our hdmi signal to SDI then run a 50m SDI cable to the stage, convert it back to hdmi to get into the monitor. Just laying out the cable and taping it to the floor and having 300-500people walk on it all the conference is now a thing of the past. The hollyland transmission works great. Longer range than any of our usb clickers/presentation switchers, so we had to buy professional MicroCue clickers to match the range of the Hollyland. Highly recommend.
From what people are saying they seem to be quite established in the events/live tv world more so than the film world. I’d never heard of them probably because I’ve never needed to stream video. But yeah, they’re bigger than I knew 👍
That’s an awesome idea Whenever I do conferences I run three of the cosmos they work excellent never had an issue I run them to my switcher for live streaming as well crowd ranges from 200-600 people

Holyland are pretty well known for their wireless transmitters and receivers. They offer good bang for buck, but are known to have pretty drastic latency for pulling focus (they are good for a directors and client monitors however). Would love to know how this stacks up for pulling focus in professional environments.
@@ChristopherMichaelLaw honestly I struggled to find hard numbers on ms delay recommendations. Teradek set the industry standard, and advertise as ‘0 latency’ , realistically it’s >1ms. It would be interesting to see how much of a difference the 8ms introduces . Maybe a side by side of this and a teradek would be the best way to identify use cases.
@@josephsavage1540 if only it was actually 8ms. They are advertising 80ms, not 8. And sadly, my real life result is around 450-500ms when transmitting from an M1 that's used for on-camera monitoring, to a second M1 that's there for the client / focus puller.

Are there any cages that support this? Would like to use something similar to WC Director's Monitor cage with this for clients to hold but fear the Antennas would be problematic. .
Oh man, Hollyland is a pretty good company. They are basically a Chinese company pretending to be European but if you don't need support, the products are reliable and good quality.
Yeah, turns out I might be in the minority not having heard of them before. The M1 feels like a good well made product so my first impression is a good one.

The best review of Mars M1. It's exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!!
Glad it was helpful!
Love Hollyland products. They're essentially a step down from Teradek's but well worth the price. We use them on set all the time.
Awesome. People seem to agree they make good products.

so glad you made this video, saw this monitor pop up on amazon and was intrigued

Thanks, mate. It's a nifty bit of kit. Definitely takes a lot of hassle out of wireless video streaming.
I want to know that latency between the Mars M1 and Phone app plz.

Its a shame our carmeras dont have a native app that just do the wireless feed to our phones from the get go....

Yeah, that is a bummer. Can’t say I’ve had any drop out other than when testing the range for the video.
No 4k60 support via HDMI is unfortunately a no go for me.
Are there any cages that support this? Would like to use something similar to WC Director's Monitor cage with this for clients to hold but fear the Antennas would be problematic. .
I don't know about cages but they have side handles and other accessories on their web page.
They should have pre-applied the screen protector. Saves plastic on the one you remove anyway.
Yeah, that’s a good point.
What’s the bizarrely wide handheld microphone you’re using? It does a good job of noise rejection outdoors.
It's a zoom H4n Pro with a MOVO wind cover.
Are you able to control camera settings on screen?
No, you can’t control the camera.
Wait you never herd of hollyland and you do camera reviews?!?
Yep. Never needed to wirelessly stream video. But I excepted I seem to be in the minority.
no SDI output??
No, unfortunately not.
Without support for at least 60p it’s not really useable. I’m always switching between 24p and 60p when I shoot Music Videos…
Hi Mat, what camera do you use? Some can send out a different frame rate over HDMI than what is getting recorded.
Nice monitor, gives Shinobi a run for their money. Info on what the SDI and HDMI give out would have been useful.
Very true! SDI is just a HD in. HDMI is a 4K 30p loop.

not a recorder though :(
Unfortunately not. Only a matter of time until someone does it, I'd bet.
so is this better then the ninja V
Well, the ninja V is a recorder and the MARS M1 is a transmitter and receiver so it's hard to say if one is better.
The fact that you havent heard of hollyland before this concerns me
as a AV / IT service tech,, i almost creamed my pants when i saw the SDI
