that last section of the matilija climb (where rons hanger broke, i think?) is deceptively steep! i rode up from ventura train station at like 5 and had to do the little descent after that in the dark. there are some amazing hot springs in that area! shout out to the los padres forest association for all the work they do to back there
The best part for me were the clips of the pro riders. You are all highly skilled, but it takes all of about two seconds to grasp the transcendental level of world class athletes.
I’m jealous of that Kasia Niewiadoma ride even tho it was a year ago. Nice to hear you get along since we both Polish. Big up from a land of pierogies!
Unplanned single speed, pushing through what would be "search and rescue" territory for most folks, and 24 very rugged Los Padres miles with a steel steed slung over your shoulder. Most impressive.
That was such a giant adventure and I was a little bit in sorrow because of the lady riding behind, eventually fighting the giant dog that left the pawprints on the way 🥺. You ask for one thing, I have bought one of these universal hangers that has to be squezed between the quick release and the frame, replacing the original defective hanger. This is awesome and can be a rescue, but it always between the spare part and never on the bike, so its a little bit dumb from myself, because I never take it with me always hoping to get away without hangertrouble. Liebe Grüße🙋♀
A beautiful character building ride! I love your video style and music selections, especially OM. Oh, and totally agree with the Late July critique, but I think they changed it again and it’s seems at least back to normal.
that's so good to see you all biking and having this great adventure. it makes me smile and feel good motivations for a three day tour I start with a friend tomorrow, just on road rolling stuff. thanks for the creative motivation!
I've had one nearly perfect single speed fix, albeit not on my bike. I was working race service support and a guy walks up broken chain in hand. Miraculously, a second quick link was already in the chain and it tensioned quite well in one specific combination. Locked out his rear suspension and he was on his way. My favorite fix of the day for sure.
@@ultraromance drummer was in a short lived but great oi band called Rogue Trooper, plus a newer rock band called Highball. One of the founding members of Cali X lives down here in Philly now and is in a great hardcore band called Quarantine.
I was born in Ojai & have ridden just about every trail in either direction we used to call them death rides because they where in the middle of nowhere. One ride we did was from way up 33 past Rose valley it went by 2 Sisters I don’t remember the exact name but named after 2 rock formations it eventually dropped down Marietta trail back down to drivable Matilija RD. We had a route that went up the steep canyon & all the way past Jamison lake to the campgrounds in Santa Barbara. Great rides the memories will last a lifetime.
Dunno about the flavor you mentioned, but I got some really salty and lime-ey Late July tortilla chips at GO that were heavenly. So I picked up another bag at a full-retail grocer, and they had none of that wonderful flavor- they were just like plain tortilla chips. I suspect that the GO chips were the last of their NOS.
2021 Michigan Coast to Coast gravel grinder and managed 80 miles on a single speeded cassette after breaking my hanger…until the chain started walking up the cassette and locking up. Then I gave up…next time I don’t have an extra hanger, I’ll use your method, although, it seems like Rapid Rise is needed.
ah yes the ol' walk up the cassette --- usually happens to me around mile 2, so 80 is pretty good! this method worked great and I was even able to get in a few sneaky shifts. this is not a rapid rise, so it would work with most set up s
To answer your question, I have had rear derailleur “events” on bikes with vertical drop outs and, no, shortening the chain to ride single speed has never panned out; the chain is either too tight or too loose and just skips around. So, your solution was smart thinking. (Maybe not as smart as packing a spare hanger. Heheh)
I used to use dynamos on all my bikes, but rechargeable head lamps have gotten so good, and they of course work while bike hiking. I use the intercore ones. I mounted a Fenix pd36r to my handlebars too I think. it was a Ted King recommendation
I think those are crust Juan Martins on Taylor's bike --- and the cali X is so good! wish they were still around since they would theoretically play in CT
I will have to remember the next time I'm looking for something small on the ground to clasp my hands behind my back (15:03) as it seems like that's what worked for you all to find the 12 speed quick link.
mark cavendish missed out on a stage win wich would have taken him above eddt merckx in tour de france stage wins cause of crap 12 speed engagement glitch in a sprint Chain failure on 12 speed is a real issue had one shear you have to spend a fortune on a top spec chain
its certainly an issue --- see it happen more and more with the pros and in real life. wonder if Cav will ride 9 speed in his retirement now --- or if he is asking Shimano "may I speak to your manager?"
@@ultraromance Maybe he will be in the market for shimano cues 10 speed or GRX 10 speed or scavenge around for high end new old 10 speed stock like everyone else at the moment lel. Or perhaps shimano will have the guts to bring out a high end 10 speed group again ? anyway i think Cav has got a contract for next years tour if he can put his body through it again
that is a whole other story, but basically yes! she was supposed to turn around but when we got cell service again we figured out she'd kept coming. we went back in the night after finishing to go find her, and there she was walking down the mountain at 2am
Ronaldo literally Voile strapped his broken off retro M952 XTR Derailleur back onto the chainstay of his curated Alumalith 😂😍 Doesn’t get any more badass… I am gay for him and only for him.
The laughing when you walk up with the snapped hanger hit me with joy. Thats a good indication you’re riding with the good ones ❤
I would have it no other way! --- we gotta hot line one of these some day!
@@ultraromanceyes. Meaning to come over to ride with Joe out in nutmeg county

What a team around you! Kasia took 3rd place in TdF on July 30th and 1st place at the Gravel Cycling World Championships in October.
Beautiful views of the Channel Islands from up there! Grew up in CT and now live in Ventura, love to see this

off the beaten track hard core masterclass ahead of the pack in lightyears
Watching this makes me so happy I carry an extra hanger with me as well as chain tool with links and valve stems and 4 co2s
Such an epic tale of triumph in adversity. I'm amazed that there weren't more human casualties, a testament to your survival skills!
Really neat to see you in the 805! That's what's up!
Great to see you invoke the spirit of Shackleton and Frank Worsley.

Impressive perseverance in the face of self imposed adversity and the chewing of more than you broke off.

So sick
If you have the desire to, can you make a video on essential oils and how to stay “trail-fresh” when traditional showers are not available.
Oh nice! I thought you just forgot to post this LOL
Now that's Rivendell country ....
It’s not usually a good idea to mix big rides with psilocybin but in this case it works.
