Ewhurst Green - 1930's Southern Railway

  • Southern Railway stock from the late 1930s came to visit Ewhurst Green.
    The import of Bananas moved from Hull to Southampton in 1933, with the Southern Railway building steam-hearted Banana vans from 1935. Even then vans were hired in from the LNER. In 1937 the Banana traffic moved to the Royal Albert Docks.
    The ex.LSWR 4 Lav cross-country sets were reduced to 3 Lav in the late thirties. The date for shortening set 134 is unclear and was probably undertaken in July 1937 and certainly by July 1941 (with its TL going to 'Loose').
    Maunsell High-Window set 447 probably lost its lining with a July 1937 repaint and is seen here augmented with a Restaurant coach and Third Open.
    Built by the Southern Railway, the 2 BIL unis entered service in February 1937 followed by the 2 HAL units in May 1939. The last was withdrawn in July 1971.
    The Banana vans were supplied by www.themodelce... with weathered BR(S) versions expected soon.
    Thanks go to Signalman Luke for providing his Southern Railway rolling stock to run along with his patient assistance during filming.

      Thank you! 👍
      The Southern used horizontal timbering for its staithes - the model uses wood and real coal (graded). 🙂
      A customer remonstrates with the railway's coal-yard manager whilst the local independent coal merchant looks on from his wooden shed; the signal steps out of the box door to see what the fuss is all about. 😉
      These were the days when labour was cheap and a couple of labourers spent best part of a day simply digging the coal out of the wagons and into the staithes...... 🧐

    Very nice indeed . Very evocative of the Southern . Just subscribed. I like the angled level crossing and the houses again at angle to railway . So often people plonk buildings down parallel to or at 90 degrees to railway which is not typical

    • @ewhurstgreen
      @ewhurstgreen  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Welcome to Ewhurst Green and thank you for your kind comments! 🙂
      The angling of the level crossing achieves several things:
      1. Realism and greater interest.
      2. Signal Box steps ideally should be at the other end - difficult to alter a resin model. However, by angling the road's approach the signalman would still have a view of road traffic approaching the level crossing gates.
      3. The road continues onto the removable scenic corner board enabling a realistic incline up and away from the level crossing.
      4. The incline is there to get away from scenery being all at rail level - apart from level crossings it rarely is!
      More detail is provided on www.EwhurstGreen.com - please enjoy! 🌞

      Having had past comments about trains running to slow, I try to provide a range of train speeds in the video clips. Different camera positions can also make the same train look faster or slower too. 😮
      Captions is a tricky one as I do not want to obscure any given train and on that basis not all clips lend themselves to having a caption. However, will be increasing the duration of the captions. 🌞

      Can confirm Signalman Luke (whose stock was being used) struggled to obtain the Dunkirk set.
      Apologies that it was too short - an afternoon of filming leads to 4 minutes of video (including tea breaks) and I don't wish to risk sending my audience to sleep with it being overlong.
      The Low Window Maunsell coach sets are covered on my www.BloodandCustard.com website with High Window to follow. 🙂
      Would dearly love a 4 LAV Brighton line electric unit. In preparing coach set pages on B&C have tended towards using 4 Lav for locomotive hauled sets so as to give a little differentiation with the electric stock. 🧐
      4 LAV is correct for the electric units (notwithstanding operating publications did occasionally vary) whereas the use of 4 Lav or 4 LAV (etc) varied more across the Lancing Works and CM&EE record cards. ⚡

      @@ewhurstgreen The only theory I can come up with is that the trains are DCC fitted when you think they are DC. When a DCC fitted loco runs on DC, then a minimum power level must be achieved for the motor to run. If not enough power is available then the motor will stall momentarily causing the surging effect you have observed.

      Reform a unit with two powered motorbogies (from the surging pair) and cyclical surging still occurs.
      Running these units a few inches apart and cyclical surging does not occur.
      However one unit is faster than the other and current thoughts are towards this being a significant causal factor. ⚡
      Next step is to compare the thirty or so Bachmann multiple units in service to see which run at a different speed and does surging occur when further units of dissimilar speed are coupled - a time consuming undertaking!

      Thank you Mike! 👍
      There are several double slips and even more single slips of the layout - each set of switchblades have their own motor (i.e. four motors per double slip). 🌞
      Whilst the scenic side's turnout motors (Tortoise) are in place and locally wired, each will be operated through a Type 600 relay and I need to prepare the relay racks for the scenic side of the layout (around 60 number relays in all)..... 🙂
      By comparison the storage loops use 110 number relays.... 🙀

    • @ModelRailwaysUnlimited

      @@ewhurstgreen my word, so many relays amazing

    • @ewhurstgreen
      @ewhurstgreen  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@ModelRailwaysUnlimited The layout uses conditional locking and in the storage loops both route setting and automation is employed. 👍
      Furthermore (and as an example) there is just one row of six isolating switches for the five Down storage roads - these isolate the sections on the storage road selected - much easier than 5 rows of 6 switches. 😄
      Some of the storage loop isolating sections suffered voltage drop, so each section is now operated through its own relay. 🙄
      Yes, there are a lot of relays. However, operation is simple and reliable. 🙂
      The Tortoise turnout motors work best from using two 12v transformers with a centre tap. The Type 600 relays work best on 24v so utilise the -12v /+12v from the pairs of transformers. 🌞
      Previous layout (Apothecary Street - remember the junction?) used Type 3000 relays off a 50v supply! ⚡

      Have covered the early BR liveries here: www.BloodandCustard.org
      I'm presuming you are referring to the trap in the foreground of the introduction clip?
      The 'N' class is on the Down Main; the 'T9' on the Up Main. Next is the short 'reversible' off the branch into Platform 1 and finally the 8-car Electric Siding with the trap-point protecting the 'reversible' and Platform 1.
      Alongside the 8-Car Electric Siding is an 8-coach carriage siding accessed off the non-passenger Loop alongside Platform 1.
      Besides the subsidiary signals, a concrete carriage-cleaning walkway needs to be installed between these two sidings and (as typical in those days) boarded conductor rail in the 8-Car Electric Siding alongside the walkway - these days the conductor rails have been moved away from carriage-cleaning walkways. 🙂

      In terms of Ewhurst Green's BR(S) stock the air-gap' is an issue I am gradually addressing with close-couplings and gangway connectors.🙂
      Some coaches use Modeller's Mecca connections but these can cause issues under compression (they were asked if they were willing to supply a large number of blanking plates but chose not to reply - these would use existing components so easy to fabricate) so have moved onto Keen Systems floating end plates.🧐
      The Keen Systems floating end plates are really good but the coach has to be dismantled to fit them. If I'm going to dismantle a coach then might as well fit passengers - I have all these but need the time to paint them - about 1500 in total!😒

    A fine-looking layout, but I would suggest that it needs some careful 'weathering' - especially on those roadways! The trackwork looks very good, but, although it may be an illusion, I query whether the conductor rails are a little too far away from the adjacent running rail and sit a little too high.

    • @ewhurstgreen
      @ewhurstgreen  4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you for your observations on the layout (which is still under construction with subtle weathering present).
      The conductor rails are correctly positioned from the track centreline which in OO means there is a slightly wider spacing from the 'narrow' 16.5mm gauge running rails. This spacing ensures the conductor rail does not foul axleboxes (etc) whilst remaining appropriately positioned for shoegear.

      @ewhurstgreen  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you for asking a reasonable question and yes, full signalling is on the 'to do' list. 👍
      Ewhurst Green remains under construction so only a number of shunting signals have been installed.
      The only visible running signals will be the starting signals. Currently the Up platforms are awaiting construction (there is also an Up Loop) while I'm hoping Ratio will produce an SR RH bracket for the three Down starters (if needed two of these could have mechanical route indicators).
      With the exception of the RH brackets, all the other signals (with spares) are safely packed away ready for installation.
      Like my previous layout, track sections will be controlled through the signalling (electric lever frame) via a conditional relay locking. The storage loops already use route setting utilising one-hundred and ten Type 600 GPO relays
      The Home and Advanced Starting signals would be way outside of the scenic area.
      I hope this answers your question. 🙂

    • @ewhurstgreen
      @ewhurstgreen  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Since you come to ask...... 😮
      No. 😁
      It is a Aldershot & District Dennis Lowline 111. 🙂
      Southdown didn't reach Ewhurst Green although it there had been such a junction station, then services may have been extended north from Horsham. 🤔
      Could be an excuse for a Southdown PD3 else a Guy Arab 1V. 🌞
      I am also minded towards a London & Country STL appearing on a route from Dorking..... 😉

      It can be a rewarding hobby - Ewhurst Green strives to create a degree of operational realism from the fifties /early sixties although in this instance it was nice to have a friend bring late-thirties stock to run. 🌞

      @martyn6792 Realistic arcing is something on the 'to do list' by placing an arc-flash behind one of the conductor rail's off-ramps. ⚡

      @@martyn6792 Yes, might start with a manual switch as trying to fit automation to a fleet of units will be time consuming. 🧐
      A simple switch could be achieved quite quickly - a couple of units envisaged - although operational timing would be everything.
      Tried to get the conductor rail positioning correct, including two side-ramps - these went out of favour on the mainline years ago (a few still exist). However, many are still used on the London Underground. ⚡

    Where do you get your vehicles? Help?

    • @ewhurstgreen
      @ewhurstgreen  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Glad to assist and I'm presuming you are referring to rubber-tyred vehicles (compared to steel wheel on steel rail). 👍
      Many of the cars such as the Mk1 Consul are from the excellent Pocketbod (Classix) range and Oxford Diecast (Triumph Herald and Heinkel Cabin Scooter 'bubblecar' - in the alley).
      The Aldershot and District omnibus on the bridge is EFE, the coal merchant's lorry is Base Toys and the Wales & Edwards three-wheeled battery milk float is a delightful Oxford model.
      A few are kit-built models such as the semi-rigid pantechnicon, Austin Mini traveller and the Scammell mechanical horse (Oxford now produce a model of this).
      The two cyclists were also a kit whose name I've forgotten right now.
      Most were acquired from browsing model railway shops over the years although these can be a dying breed (my regular shops are now long gone) as are some of the niche kit manufacturers.
      As examples of mail order from smaller retailers in the north of the country I've used Arcadia (Shaw nr Oldham), in the south Compass Models (Rotherfield) and to the west, Hereford Model Shop.
      Then there are the 'big-boys' such as Kernow Model Rail Centre (Camborne & Guildford) and The Model Centre (Whitby).
      I hope this assists!🙂

      Oxford also produce quite a few American cars in HO and it would be nice if they produced a (just) post-war Buick in 4mm - Buick had UK dealerships at that time - so many forget or didn't realise (my first car was a Buick). 😉

      Thank you for your kind comment which pushed me into action! 👍
      Did post a reply a week ago but it appears to have disappeared. In that reply I said I'd look into arc units - well, now delivered they are on my workbench.🙂
      Conductor rail arcing is relatively rare and usually occur when a shoe leaves a conductor rail off-ramps. So the secret is going to be setting up a magnet (and reed switch) under the Secondman's position so the arc will only be drawn in one direction.⚡
      Currently awaiting a delivery of small magnets which can fulfil this directional function. 🧐
