Yep, the original was done on Stratus and was played by none other than Leland Sklar. Go on his channel and check him playing it , massive attack pulled the bass line from that song from the early 70s.
i wonder if there is ever going to be a band like Massive Attack again. The music they made is just amazing i cant describe it with words. Its this nostalgic feeling from 90's and early 00's. Im going to miss those days
Philip Johnson. Hi Philip. I have witnessed the Mighty Dreadzone on many occasions.. And always superb for me. Playing in my hometown of Chippenham in Wiltshire ,at The Neeld Hall. Although it has a very cheesy updated name. Of The Neeld ! Which absolutely kills it for me !! Saw The Cure there in the late Seventies... what a privilege sir...
The drums came in and i was thinking they sounded killer, then the bassline came in loud and clear in the mix and i thought it sounded better than the studio recording. But then the vocals....wow!! And that outro, holy shit, incredible
Just seems to me that this song is perfect for making love? That tune, that rhythm and so much passion... so sensual... Two stranger paths meet each other in this cold and cruel world. They are so lonely and vulnerable but they don't want to be. They just want to love and be loved - even if only for a short time.
MIND BLOWING ! This is the best version of this song, much better and much more cutting-edge than the album version, as the singer just goes straight up at the chorus when saying "hurt", it makes the song so much more cutting-edge 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 MAGIC !!

Massive Attack are AMAZING! They are very talented musicians you just prove you have a good taste for quality music. Take Care. Greetings from United Kingdom.
What a magnificent live rendition of this song. The arrangement, the playing, the singing, everything. I saw them live in the Hague either 98 or 99 and they were awesome then as well. I think this mtv live performance was around the same time after the mezzanine album was released.
Except that this isn't Shara Nelson singing. Nelson left Massive Attack after 1993 to focus on her solo career, while this footage dates from 1996. She also looks completely different compared to the lady in this video!
Massive Attack is more than a reflection of an era. It’s a phantom asteroid who returns to set his sights on sound art. A decadent wave laden with paradoxes from which obscurantism and the irrational escape, hypnotic factors defying vulnerable souls in search of the infinity. This sound architecture is an translucid and short tunnel that leads to light¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I got hooked to this song as it has a lot of "hooks" in rhythm and bassy sound. Catchy tune. GREAT vocals. Fell in love with it when I watched "The Insider" It went well with the revolving door that Pacino walks out of as Lowell Bergman and the slo motion scene.

All their albums are good but Blue Lines and Mezzanine are my faves. Mezzanine is the best (how do I put this politely) erm... lovers album - ever....It does funny things to a couple. Enjoy.
Very good live performance but I much prefer the unique strength and texture of Nelson's original version/voice.
