Sam, I'm 83, started turning because of Covid. Your Chanel was one of my first to watch. We all watch & learn better ways. Choice of woods, tools all from. You & Mike& Richard teach every week
I LOVE watching COCO in the shop, & ofcourse your lovely wife turning as well. We all have enjoyed the ride, but it's yourchoice..

Change is hard for me, too, Sam. Do what's best for you. I started watching woodturning channels to learn how to be a better turner, so I just subscribed to LEARN2TURNWITHSAM. I'll keep checking back with WyomingWoodturner for the 4 way videos. Best,

You have been a treasure trove of turning knowledge - we will follow your new link.
Of course we'll refer back to YT for answers to our needs.
    Thank you Sam.

Sam- money is definitely a necessity, and I appreciate your honesty on it. I will continue watching the learn to turn channel, and am very pleased you are continuing on the 4 way series. It has become one of my favorites. It seems to me that you tube has gone a bit money hungry. Last night, in a 40 minutes presentation, there were 6 commercial breaks, where you could not skip. Obviously, they are paid (well?) for the ads, and it encourages paying them for their premium service. I know it turns a lot of people off. Being retired, with costs escalating so sharply, paying for another service is not in the cards for me. Thank you for all your time, and dedication to educate us

Sam I just started turning about 4 years ago and a lot of what I learned is from watching your videos. Thank you for all your work making these videos, I havent watched all your videos but I"m working on it. I hope you are happy in whatever you decide you want to do. I will continue to watch your videos as long as you make them available and I will watch your learn to turn videos. Thanks for all of your videos and I hope you find happiness in whatever you decide to do.

Sam, I am a veteran wood turner. I discovered your channel, back when, when my wife bought me a tablet. I've graduated up to a laptop now. I often how youtubers are able to produce videos on the level of frequency that you fellows do it. I have learned a lot from you, to me you represent the encyclopedia of
woodturning. I am on board for whatever decision you make about your future. Most important is that you do what you feel is best for you. Even being what I call a veteran, does not keep me learning from you or any other turners. I look forward to your decisions and wish you only the best.

Good on ya Sam! At our age (and you are just a youngster) it is important to do what we like to do and stay active. Your loyal subscribers will continue to watch your videos and support you. You, Tomislav, Richard and Mike are true teachers along with a few others. I wish you the best in whatever your decisions are.
    Take care, Dave

I learned turning strictly on YT. Seven years ago, and I still have not seen anyone turn in real time. I could not wait for your videos to break. Also, at that time there were three others I wouldn't miss. You, Mike, and the big guy were my teachers. I did branch out into doing resin and have stopped turning all wood pieces. My shows were very prosperous, and this is the first hobby I've had that pays for itself.
    Cheers,
    Lee

Sam, hate to see you give up the original channel. I have learned so much from you. I really haven’t given your new channel a lot of views, assuming it is for mostly brand newbies? I will watch more so see if I can still learn new tricks or maybe remember what I have forgotten? If it is no longer as rewarding in all the manner you’ve hoped for either give it up and focus on building the new one or try harder to make them both work. All the best and stay safe.

Sam I have watched and learned from all your videos on both your channels. I understand it takes a lot of time to make and edit each video. I have not been able to find an editor that works for my simple mind. So the few videos I have posted on my channel have all been unedited in real time. I will continue to watch all the videos you post on both your channels.

Your subscribers and number of views per video seems roughly consistent with that of similar woodturning education TH-camrs. The only woodturners who have substantially more have clickbaity videos where they turn outlandish things and provide no real educational value, no discussion of how and why they do what they do. It's unfortunate that it is impossible to make make decent money providing the important content that you provide. I think this is why a lot of wood turning instructors have switched from the TH-cam model to doing live stream demonstrations that viewers have to pay for.

If you really enjoy making the videos - then make the videos and stop worrying and complaining about the money. People get tired of hearing about it. Lots of folks on you tube complain about the money. If it is about the money - quit. Then you make nothing because you are not putting out any content. It seems like a lot of tubers end up complaining about the time invested and the money made. If you enjoy making & editing videos then do it for the enjoyment. Just my opinion. Hope it helps you make a decision. Good luck in whatever you decide.

Well said. It is rather naive to think you can outsmart Google and take their money. Some channels are successful, but very few. Sam is working his heart out chasing a dream. I post “shorts” just for the fun of it. If people watch-great. But, I really don’t care. Turning is a small part of my life. I love all types of woodworking and do it for my satisfaction. After all, isn’t that what a hobby is about.

Why can’t such a good woodturner make enough money turning?

    • @WYOMINGWOODTURNER
      @WYOMINGWOODTURNER  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Frank
That is exactly the question. It is very difficult to truly be a professional Woodturner. We have to make money in several different areas.
Many Woodturners have signature tools they sell, they demonstrate they write magazine articles, and some are even TH-camrs. I believe there is a small percentage of turners who do OK. I have never been a production Turner and never wanted to be. That is another avenue that can be lucrative. I sell my stuff on Etsy and do fairly well. Put on TH-cam the competition is enormous. I am not just competing against other Woodturners but everyone who makes a video. Those who watch Wood Turning videos is a small percentage of viewers on TH-cam anyway you can see it’s very complicated. Thanks, Sam
