Mazda's Crosstrek rival just got better and way faster this year with a turbo engine that makes it quicker then most of its luxury rivals from Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. Would you guys consider buying this over a far pricier luxury brand?
I'm not a luxury brand guy . . . I'm more interested in performance, especially handling, and I've owned and liked Mazda vehicles; the steering feel is usually great and previous vehicles in their line always had a fine suspension even in base vehicles. Sadly, Mazda is pushing towards that 'white area' (A|A reference) with the Buick and Cadillac and the semi-luxury types . . . and they are being forced there because the leadership at Hyundai and Kia have out-Mazda-ed Mazda, bringing really sporty and fun cars to the market; meanwhile Mazda can't seem to keep up and their products are not as sporty and fun-to-drive as they used to be.
I read that a turbo and direct injection engine combo gunks up the valves more and quicker. I am not really looking for luxury, but more so for reliability and longevity. I am a fan of the Crosstrek, but Mazda’s reputation for reliability and longevity has my husband and I looking at the CX30 for a daily driver. I am a taller guy than him, but I think the CX30 will be large enough for me because the Crossrek definitely is. Should I be concerned with a direct injection/combo, or am I overthinking this?
honda-acura, nissan-infiniti, toyota-lexus, hyundai-genesis, what does Mazda have? and why is it important to have a luxury divions? basically the same car but makes more money on each of them.
@Ayush Malpeddi because at the time, Hyundai and Kia had a reputation for making garbage cars (of course today is a different story) but Mazda doesn’t have such a history or stigma, their worst was probably the 00s when Ford was at the helm but even then they were still decent. I think Mazda can safely mold themselves into an affordable luxury brand. I would’ve preferred the safer route of bringing enfini or a new luxury brand into the US but Mazda doesn’t have the money for that most likely.
Exactly! Every time I think of going with another car, I come back to Mazda because no CVT, no auto start stop. None of these massively oversized touchscreens.

Mazda's interior design is fine they don't need to update the gauge display nor the gear shifter. I drive one because they are not going with all the same crap other automakers are doing. I don't want crappy LED screens in front of me everywhere-that trend is killing the industry. Just cost cutting that's all!
My CX-30 got 38 mpg on a cruise, and it held it there for about an hour. But mostly it sits around 17 with city traffic. I wouldn't mind upgrading to the turbo. I like the smaller size. Makes parking easier.
I think Mazda becomes confused with what the consumer wants when reviewers are saying the base engine is underpowered 12:37, then when the turbo comes out they say it is a bit much for the segment 14:59
He's much too critical. This Mazda gives you so much more... more quality and engagingness than any other vehicle in it's class. Even without the turbo. The base engine is more than enough for this car and the typical buyer in this segment. I've driven both and can't say the extra power is really necessary.. it is awesome that they offer it though
I have the non-turbo and it's got smooth power anytime you need it. Sometimes it's a little wonky gear shifting when going slow but I never feel underpowered. I admit the turbo makes me a little jelly but for what I paid it's an amazing ride.
@@kin357 wonky gear shifting is because mazda transmission is ancient. Wonky is called gear hunting, the car can't decide whether it wants to be in 2nd or 3rd. That why everyone else uses 7 to 8 speed transmission
@@441meatloaf You are confused about how gear hunting works. The transmissions with more gears are the ones that have trouble figuring out which one of the many gears available the vehicle should be in, and they always do more hunting than the ones with lesser amounts of gears.
@@chuckd7423 you obviously are confused how mazda transmission works...the 2.5l skyactive and the old 6 speed actually struggles at certain rpms to pull power out
@@441meatloaf No it does not--I rent Audis and jost sold a 2020 Stinger with a ZF8 speed tranny that was excellent. The mazda hunts gears the least out of those.
From a personal mechanic perspective: I don’t like a machine telling me how I should drive and Mazda keeps it that way. You take full control of the vehicle. Vehicles nowadays offer tons of features which is nice but I like to keep it simple where I have full control of the vehicle (p.s makes it cheaper to fix, less tech) From a personal customer perspective: Maybe there could be a few things that Mazda can do to “make life easier” but other than that. We love our AWD 2021 Cx30 premium.
Awesome review! Thanks! But I do have to disagree on the cladding. In fact, the entire reason I started researching this car today, is because earlier during my errands, I saw 3 of these on the road, 2 of which were white, and it was that cladding and black wheels that really made the look for me. Instead of the car looking like a generic white rounded suv, it looked more sporty and aggressive. I dig it!
So I just purchased this vehicle and I have to say it's the perfect blend of a practical daily driver without giving up the fun. It also floods where I live with bad roads so it's great for me. Nothing else really compares at 32k. (2024 Carbon Trim). My previous vehicle was a 2015 328i Xdrive. The Cx-5 was just too big for me, it looses the agility the cx-30 has. My main critique is the small gas tank. Coming from the BMW I love the fact that it isn't too premium and yet still fun, because the BMW meant $$$$ on maintenance and repairs. (Which I avoided mostly with DIY) Of course you can't DIY serious issues which is why I traded before they started.
CX30 is 60 inches tall which is 5 inches shorter than most crossovers, just slightly taller than most sedans or hatches. A bit of a station wagon, which I like. Lower center of gravity for easier cornering.
Yeah I find a lot of the reviewers are doing this. It is easy to get spoiled and as a result they complain about this and that I am sure if they changed the shifter to something else they would complain about missing an actual shifter like the old days etc
Complaining about the shifter is ridiculous also. Nobody likes push button shifters or the column ones that are on the new Mercedes models. His reviews are getting kind of lazy. He just gets in every car and Floors it.
I’m definitely liking the turbo in this vehicle. It’s why I’m buying it. Same engine as the CX5 but lighter and less expensive. Get a darker colour and that cladding isn’t noticeable. If people don’t like it they can try telling me so as I pass them. Lol
Sofyan always complains about not having a touchscreen. Those are fine when you're not moving, but roads in the midwest are the reason I love the scroll wheel. I'd take it over a touchscreen or whatever Acura and Lexus are doing anyday!
I agree, I don't care about touch screens when the car is moving, the cars motion and bumps ( I also live in the mid-west) make them hard to use. Once you get use to them and your favorites saved the scroll wheel works fine.
Jesus Christ, calm down. 9 mins in and I’m trying to enjoy the review but you’re literally bitching about everything. It’s a sub compact Mazda not a Mercedes. Obviously they have to keep the cost down and as is, this car offers way more in luxury and refinement than any of its competitors. People shopping for a subcompact mainstream Crossover DONT care about full digital displays, cooled seats, power folding mirrors, etc. I wish a Kicks, C-HR, HR-V, Kona, Ecosport, Renegade, or Seltos offered half the shit or quality this car has.
As long as you are not driving at 250kmh on an autobahn you don’t need more than six gears. A normal drive on the highway on speed limit you will usually get 1500 to 2000 rpm on gear six. You don’t get the reliability of a Japanese car with other luxury brands.
@@441meatloaf He said "You don't get the reliability of a Japanese car with other luxury brands". Acura and Lexus ARE Japanese brands, so those would be included in his comment about the reliability of Japanese cars.
"i dont know if people are looking for this type of speed in this segment" Every single car in this segment is underpowered. 250hp is great, maybe even a little high, but all the rest should be pushing close to 200hp, i'm not sure why they all settled in to the 140hp range. That said, this turbo motor is what was missing from the CX-3 (that and a manual gearbox). I'll be sad to see it go in the next model year without realizing its full potential.
My boyfriend just bought this one with the turbo yesterday and he loves it. He got the metallic grey color which is nice bc that black cladding isn’t as noticeable. He didn’t need all the space the CX-5 gave but wanted something bigger than a car so this model was that perfect in between with AWD and many premium features. He loves it and now always offers to drive
I get it the way Mazda makes you feel about if its luxury or not is the samw way i feel watching this after John Davis or Jeremy Clarkson review a car. Yes i got some CX30 info but was it a luxury youtube experience?

Sir, I have unsubscribed. You are too nitpick about everything. This brand is doing very well. You simply need to understand the brand. This isn't the first review I have seen you do like this. Cheer up and stop complaining.
You seem down on it. To me it looks like a great car for a fair price. One of my beefs, which this car answers, is lack of small Japanese performance hatches and wagons.
Exactly. When he says, “there’s something about it that does remind me that it is not a luxury brand...I’m not entirely sure what it is but...” Hello, if you have a sort of nebulous feeling, that you can’t find anything substantive to support, that’s called a “bias!”
What is confusing is this guy. If the car is not fast he calls it slow. If the car actually is fast he put it down people don't want this much speed in Mazda...... Nitpicking.....
I'll defend the black cladding to the death. I like the way it looks and it's saved me twice in the parking lot and from rocks flying up from the road. No dings, scratches, nada.
I don’t really like the cladding but loved the car in general so I went with a dark grey metallic color and it looks really nice! The black cladding isn’t as noticeable as it is with this white color.
To me part of the eloquence of the CX30 is that is retains simple, clean, easy to read and operate gauges and controls and allows you to easily focus more of your energy on enjoying driving it. The gauges remind me more of European cars of the past, with few gimmicks; and the shifter, remaining a traditional stick is something that everyone I speak to agrees needs to remain in vehicles -- nobody like these rotary dials, and it's the one big thing I don't like about my Ram truck. And there's nothing wrong with the 6 speed transmission. I've had some 6 speeds I've loved, and had no issues with the 9 speeds I've had on our Cherokees -- they performed very well; but didn't offer the traditional sensations and sound effects a 6 speed still provides. And is someone looking for this sort of performance in this segment -- Heck yeah! I actually had an older customer with a 2.0L Ecoboost boasting to me about how fast it was. Is it something I'm interested in myself, too? Heck yeah!
Coming from a mazda 3, so this ride higher but it's shorter than mazda3? My 15 mazda 3 just barely enough to fit 2x4 8'. So this not going to fit that?
Both the CX-30 and CX-5 are excellent cars. If you don't care for CVT no worries either. Only problem is if you have trouble with blind spots these cars are not for you. Check out The 2020 Forester. Also a great car especially for the money.

Yes, I think he's becoming a bit jaded. He drives so many high-end cars that he nit-picks every little thing. I used to like his reviews, but I'm finding Alex on Autos reviews to be more informative from a consumer standpoint.
Have you driven a new Mazda? Mazda now has some of the quietest vehicles in class. I’ve owned a 17 6, 18 CX5 and now a 20 3 hatch and 20 CX5. I can literally see/hear the improvement year by year as it has been that dramatic. Mazda engineers made at least 49 refinement changes to the Mazda3 when they launched the latest generation in 2019. People need to test drive a new Mazda and see..... my new 3 has the interior/quietness of something you won’t find elsewhere in its class.
I currently drive a CX-5 GT, but it feels a little too big and lacks punch. I used to drive a WRX wagon; my knee says no more manuals but I miss turbo. I’m short, need the height, want the 360 view. The CX-30 premium plus hits all the right notes. Hate the huge fobs though...

The 6 speed is paired with the recent Skyaktiv line, which need a high rev for optimal power and thus you gain nothing by an automatic that shifts more often. The 5 and 6 are set so low that you will never use the 6'th on high ways unless downwind
Mazda makes great cars and SUV’s. I’ve had my cx5 now almost 3 years. It’s very close to luxury. They need to improve on the infotainment screen. The thick bezels are not great. Digital dash needed and the looks wear on you rather quickly. Great cars though the cx5 handles amazingly
They finally did improve the CX5 infotainment for 2021. It’s a bigger screen, new interface, and a bit more responsive than the last gen. They fully got rid of the touch feature though so you must use the wheel on the armrest for everything. I don’t mind it! Muscle memory and you got it figured out within a couple days of driving.
@@Ryan57Garr You would mind if your system has onboard gps and using that wheel knob to look for an address is fucking atrocious. It does not take less time to do and it takes 10x more effort and time vs using a touchpad. Not to mention mazda don't make radio stations and tune mix accessible easily using that knob.
I was literally waiting for someone to call out those horrible black claddings. Can't they offer one without it? Imagine being a company known for style and you murder your own car by doing this
I don't think it should've been the standard engine on either the CX-30 or Mazda3, I have the Mazda3 turbo but I've driven plenty of the nomral 2.5 Mazda3 and CX30, their performance is plenty enough for most. Only power hungry people like me (or Sofyan) really need the turbo.
@Keith Rogers The Jetta has a 1.4TSI (C&R tested it and did 7.6s to 60mph), not a 1.6 (it should be getting a new 1.5 with pretty much the same torque and power numbers). And I don't think it can feel weak when compared to that car, the Mazda3 with the 2.5 NA is actually faster (7.2s in AWD form which is heavier and has greater drive train loss) and does not have the classic 1.4 TSI turbo lag (and no one is brake torquing their car at every stop light). I've driven both cars extensively and I couldn't disagree more with your comment. Although both are great cars, I don't see where you get your information from. Also, Corolla, Forte, Elantra, base Civic have NA engines, so not most cars come with turbo engines, for most people who just want or need a commuter car Turbo is not essential, and not all turbos are faster than NA engines.
@@AndresSalazarAutos the Jetta has way better fuel economy I had one for a week I was averaging 32mpg in city driving on highway it was always over 40+mpg
Nice review and car. I own a 2019 CX-5 Signature. Would have considered the turbo CX-30 if it was available then. I think the CX-30 should has the 40/20/40 split rear seat like the CX-5 and also ventilated seats and power passenger seats. These would be easy to add and really make it more up-market.
Have you looked at the CX30 rear seats? It says it can sit 3, but at best its only really 2. No one can sit in the middle with the giant AWD tunnel going back. Its one of the biggest chonky tunnel i have seen in any AWD vehicle. The rear space is too tight for adults anyways. Back seat is not useful at all in a mazda cx30. In fact the mazda3 sedan has better back seat room.
@@rdm925 Great. I am cross shopping against RAV4 petrol only, Corolla Cross hybrid, and non-turbo Hyundai Kona petrol only. CX 30 came last second on my list but is at the top. Do you think it can go 300,000 miles like a Toyota?
those super big cladding make the car look cheap.....like how the base trim of a corolla in the 90s has black bumper....and the more expensive trims have body color paint
I don’t care much for it either - I drive a 3 hatch and CX5 - but look at all the other vehicles in the CX30 class - they’re doing the same thing. Start with the KIA for example.
Does anyone know if Mazda put a lift kit on the 2021 CX-30? The 2020 had 6.9" of ground clearance. If they did something to add that extra inch, then great...but Mazda is not known for accuracy in its measurements. They advertised the Mazda6 as having more rear leg room than the Accord at once point.
Very late response, but from what I read the 2020 CX-30 had 6.9 inches in the base trim. ALL other trims of the 2020 had the 8 inch clearance. That's what I was able to find online when I was googling it, not sure how accurate it is.

@@MattsCarsMusic I expect for $100K+ that something called the ultimate luxury truck has a quiet cabin. Like Range Rover, Bentley, BMW, Mercedes . . . But thanks for proving once again what garbage the Escalade is. Silk purse from sow's ear.
3:50 are you sure this car has 8 inches of ground clearances and 5 more inches than the Mazda3? Official website states Mazda3 has 5.5 inches. 4:12 seems like Mazda's love of skinny tires continues. A top trim, fully loaded premium compact SUV/CUV with 250hp uses 215 tires...A Corolla XSE 2.0 with 165 hp uses 225 and a civic sport with 180 hp uses 235. Same width tire as the regular non turbo Mazda3 and same wheels...and everything reminds you of a Mazda3.
You said you wanted more power and when they gave it to you said you don't think buyers are looking for that much power. Make up your mind. It also doesn't drive like a Mazda 3. The 3 has lower profile tires 215/45/18 (vs 215/55/18) and has a much rougher ride over road imperfections. The engine noise is more pronounced. It's a much sportier ride. And the blind spot sight lines are better in the 3. The cx30 is for soccer moms, the mazda 3 is for drivers. The mazda 3 sport is 2 inches shorter to the rear deck cover so it doesn't actually have the same cargo capacity unless you remove it.
Buyers actually want more power. Thats how the consumer market is. If you look at the compact markets everyone is putting in 1.5-1.8L turbo engines. Consumers want that torque feel. But the fact of putting a 2.5L turbo like mazda, the price point is too high for majority of the consumers. Koreans and civics are the only ones putting at turbo charge cars for cheap. This would include Subaru's WRX since its one of the cheapest sport sedan you can buy.
@@joeytoribio2035 I think he said consumer don't want the power in this case because most CUV doesn't need 250 HP lol with 310 torque. I think 210-220 is more than enough like how Koreans do it. Plus Mazda with this config has really high price point that most consumers likely arent willing to buy that vs Korean Seltos.
@@441meatloaf peak numbers aren't useful. It's area under the curve that matters. The power band is fairly narrow so it's not as much power as it sounds. Mazda is now trying to compete with MB , BMW, and Audi. They all have performance variants with this kind of power. They can't compete on luxury or tech, so they need something to differentiate like power and value.
@@joeytoribio2035 If they want peak torque under the curve there's still no need putting 310 torque on that vehicle. Mechanically, the mazda tires is 215 width. It will never handle that kind of torque, it will just spend a lot of time wheel spinning. Even the NA 2.5L produces wheel spin at 186 torque. Mazda cuts a lot of corners and put cheap parts in like torsion suspension. If they want to feel luxury they would never put that suspension on their cars. Mazda thinks its competing against those german and japanese luxury brands. But in reality it isn't really doing that. People who are already in the market for a german luxury, will stay with the germans. People looking to buy entry luxury would consider an acura or lexus or infiniti or even an Audi. In fact Audi offers one of most compelling entry level luxury. There is a reason why Audi sells so damn well on their Q3's and A3's...... People in econoboxes wouldn't care about mazda luxury either, because they drive Honda's and Toyotas and Koreans. Practical people that want offroading etc would probably opt for Subarus. So who is mazda actually targeting?? Its definitely not your typical american market of truck buyers or econo and practical buyers. Its never going to bribe people away that are looking at luxury brands. Its going for such a subset of niche market of buyers its just not a viable strategy, because those subset of buyers would be more inclined for actual luxury brands. And it shows Mazda that. In their recent 2020 financial reporting, they made so much operating losses its not even funny. They are doing worse now than when they were doing financially with Ford. One of the reasons why they are cutting costs on everything and cheapening out on the parts. Mazda is internally struggling financially. But in order to become luxury they need to be able to afford to put luxury services in, which they can't.

From a personal mechanic perspective: I don’t like a machine telling me how I should drive and Mazda keeps it that way. You take full control of the vehicle. Vehicles nowadays offer tons of features which is nice but I like to keep it simple where I have full control of the vehicle (p.s makes it cheaper to fix, less tech)
From a personal customer perspective: Maybe there could be a few things that Mazda can do to “make life easier” but other than that.
I dig it!
Agreed!
I love Mazda products. This is a very nice crossover
Mazda definitely deserves more attention
CX30 is 60 inches tall which is 5 inches shorter than most crossovers, just slightly taller than most sedans or hatches. A bit of a station wagon, which I like. Lower center of gravity for easier cornering.

Looks good on certain cars. I agree, an analog one would look better here.
Complaining about the shifter is ridiculous also. Nobody likes push button shifters or the column ones that are on the new Mercedes models. His reviews are getting kind of lazy. He just gets in every car and Floors it.

A top trim, fully loaded premium compact SUV/CUV with 250hp uses 215 tires...A Corolla XSE 2.0 with 165 hp uses 225 and a civic sport with 180 hp uses 235. Same width tire as the regular non turbo Mazda3 and same wheels...and everything reminds you of a Mazda3.
I think he says 5 inches of height not ground clearance.
Got one and love it!
