I’ve been interested in genetic counseling for a few years and always struggled to find online info about what the career is really like!! So cool that you made this video. Would it be possible to make a video on common questions? I’m particularly curious about work life balance. I want to travel a lot so I’m wondering if genetic counseling has the flexibility to do so outside work
I would love this too if you’re still up for making it! Also my question is about age. I’m an older returning student and wondering if that was normal in your program or if most people were younger (older = late 30s)
I am interested too and I read that it’s practically the same thing as applying to medical school. They were listing all these things for applications which I have none of them. I am medical billing and considering changing my career. I’m nervous about that.
Thank you for making this video! I’m in my first year of college, and I’m trying to research all my possible career options with my major. This video was really insightful :] thank you!
I’m so glad I came across this video. I just finished my college applications in plans to become a genetic counselor ! And my name is also “Carli”.... same exact spelling too ! This is a sign for me !!!
Thank you for reaching out. I would say the best idea would be to look at various genetic counseling graduate program websites and see what prerequisites they require. By viewing multiple programs’ websites you can compile a list of the classes you will need to take in undergrad
Go to the National Society of Genetic Counselors -> press Careers -> press Student Corner -> press Find A Genetic Counselor -> enter state -> find a genetic counselor in your area that is “Student Contact Welcome” it will say it below their name if they are. You can email them. Fellow undergraduate pre-genetic counseling student here! : )
Hi Carli, I’m currently a PA working in the ED, but have considered a career change to genetic counseling. I was an undergrad TA for genetics and it was my favorite subject in biology. It would be a big pay cut, but I’m not entirely sure if being a medical provider is truly for me. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
I don’t have any direct advice about the pay change but that I sure with your valuable skills and experience as a PA would impact that alot and may give you opportunities that I could not have. I would say that if you are interested in genetic counseling, try to shadow and talk to as many genetic counselors as possible to get a better sense of their day to day.
Hi! This video is so insightful! You mentioned that you had a mentor who walked you through the whole application process. How did you go about finding a mentor?
how many years did you go to school after highschool and what classes did you take for your pre req. Also, in your opinion, is this job hard to get into because i’ve been interested for years and am a bio major!
It is 6 years after highschool (4 years of undergrad and two years of graduate training). A lot of the prerequisites are intro science and psychology courses but you can check the specific genetic counseling program pages to see the exact list of classes to take. I think the interest in genetic counseling has definitely increased but it is still a field where there are more open genetic counseling positions than available genetic counselors
I have graduated on 2015 BSc genetics.. Unfortunately just few months back I knew about genetic counseling, so is the gab of years will effect in any way?
I don't think gaps matter. Some programs may even appreciate that you have had some "real life" experience. I say to try to just get as much genetic counseling exposure as you can
Good luck to you in your career!! I decided to be a genetic in my junior year in high school when my mom was diagnosed eith breast cancer and I tag along on a visit with her to one. I am now a junior in college eith the same goal. How do you suggest I give it a trial run or basically get experience in doing it so I know its the right step for me?
I would say to try and talk to as many genetic counselors as possible and shadow some if you can. The more exposure you have the more you can make an educated decision on if you think this is the right field for you.
I can't speak for other programs but no one in my program had a full time job. If there is a way to go part time (which I think is rare) then maybe. But I would say since most GC classes are 10 people on average that most of the class takes all the same classes at the same time.
My undergrad degree is in Biochem, Bioinformatics, and Molecular Biology. But as I said before you can/could have majored in anything as long as you complete the prerequisites. I would say shadow genetic counselors if you can to make sure it is a field that you are interested in
I think it depends on your work environment. When I was primarily seeing inpatients, it was a little more stressful but now I have transitioned to working in industry it is a little less stressful.
In undergraduate I majored in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics but you can major in anything as long as you take the prerequisites. I would check various genetic counseling program's website to get a comprehensive prereq list. To become a genetic counselor you must complete a 2 year masters accredited genetic counseling program.

This is a good idea. I will try to pool the most common questions I get and try to make a video responding to those.
I would love this too if you’re still up for making it! Also my question is about age. I’m an older returning student and wondering if that was normal in your program or if most people were younger (older = late 30s)

I've been looking for GC channels and am so glad I found this! Love it!!

Thank you!
Your hair is so beautiful!! When you interviewed for your grad programs, did you wear your natural hair?
For a few I wore my natural hair in a bun and for others I actually was wearing a wig at that time so I just wore my hair like that.
I’m so glad I came across this video. I just finished my college applications in plans to become a genetic counselor ! And my name is also “Carli”.... same exact spelling too !

Love that! Thanks for watching

Vance Baughman, I'm trying to decide between a career as a PA or genetic counselor! What don't you like about your current job as a PA?
Just subbed! Hello from a fellow New Yorker!
Hello!!
Hi! This video is so insightful! You mentioned that you had a mentor who walked you through the whole application process. How did you go about finding a mentor?
It was actually pure luck. I took a class taught by a genetic counselor and after expressing interest in her field she really took me under her wing

Could I work full time as a nurse during GC school? 3 12 hour shifts a week

What was your undergraduate degree in? What do you recommend for people that an undergrad degree in a unrelated field wanting to make a career change?

Thank you so much 😀
what is a part time job that i could have during my bachelors/masters that could give me experience in this field?
I am not sure about part time, but you can look for genetic counseling assistant roles, crisis counseling roles, etc
I really want to do this masters!!! Will I get a really good salary from this though?
the median salary (in 2019) was around 80,000!
The comment below is correct. I would say starting salaries are close to 6 figures in LA and NYC
Can I know more , I’m thinking about this .
More videos will be coming soon. So sorry, I have been busy with work
What’s your email? 😫
