Preserving food by drying it is likely the oldest form of food preservation ever done. Reducing them to powders was probably a close second.
If kept moisture free, powdered foods can last for many years. It'd also be highly transportable and take up far less space. Another plus is keeping vermin out of your food supply (though you can't guarantee insects hatching - a problem that's hard to prevent.) If they do show up, sieve them out, give your powder an hour or so in a dry heat source again and re-bottle. (Or, consider them as McBuggets - extra protein!)
You can even do this with meat.

add a dry bay leaf 2 savory powders or dry citrus peel 2 sweet dry foods 2 keep bugs out- i use the same, but more of it, w-all stored commodities- works great!

This is great info! A couple of tips…
If you don’t want to run your oven for a long time, hit up your local thrift stores. I bought a dehydrator with 6 regular trays, two mesh trays, and one “fruit leather” tray in practically perfect condition for $15.
Be careful using oils/fats if you’re going to try to store your powders longer than a few weeks. They can go rancid pretty quickly and spoil your dehydrated item.

I watched this video some time ago and was glad to see someone doing this. I dehydrate many more times than I freeze or can. I have gone totally to coring, chunking and pureeing my tomatoes and dehydrating the puree on fruit leather trays. The thin dry tomato crumbles up and stores in a much smaller space; I vacuum pack in jars. It is easy to add to soup, stews or chili.

  • @imari2305

Nice video!! If I may suggest, try slicing all of the fruits and veggies very thinly using a mandolin and don't juice them (unless you're planning to use the juices otherwise), then dehydrate the slices like you did the puree/pulp. You will yield far more powder and no need to pre cook the beets either. I hope this helps. Peace and love :-).

Instead of throwing away fruits, vegetables, bread, fish, meat … get a dehydrator. You can find them on Amazon, at Walmart, target etc. You will save so much money and you will eat so much healthier. I also dehydrate veggies so I can put it in the slow cooker/crock pot for when I don’t have time to cook. The food will last for years. ( also when you have extra kale (and spinach/chard/dark leafy greens) dehydrate it and crumble it up and keep adding it to a mason jar you keep in the pantry, then you have green powder for soups, stews, sauces, salads, dressings, baking.. pretty much anything. It doesn’t taste like anything but has tons of vitamins. I put it in my brownie batter )

We had one carrot in the garden planted months ago with a lot of greens on top. I found recipes for carrot top pesto so I tried it out. It was more delicious than my basil pesto. Just make sure if you buy the carrots that they are organic so the carrot tops won't be toxic. I'll be eating more of the greens from the garden that I usually discard. You could have beet chips & all kinds of chips. Which you could eat as is or again store them to put in soup broths & such. I pretty much hate anything that's good for me. I always have. I've heard of people who love their veggies, or love this veggie, or that veggie. But for me, eating them is kinda torturous. Childish I guess. But I can't help it. So I'm always looking for new ways to consume them... I just didn't get what she meant by preserve flavor on bulk purchases. Has anyone noticed, The bandaged finger was on his right hand to start with and then went to his left hand at the end of the video
Must be using a mirror or he like cutting different fingers !

Also asking myself why do I need to turn this things in powder. I watch the whole video. Still what will I use it for. Interesting though.

Thanks for the video. An easier method would have been to juice the vegetables (use the juice as a vegetable broth). Then dehydrate the pulp and then grind it up. I like to do this with carrots, garlic, onions, celery, tomato, red and yellow peppers. I've never tried it with fruit. Your the first person that I've come across that made a video showing how to use vegetables to make salt. This is much more nutritious than table salt.

If adding sugar make sure to use confectionary to match the consistency of your fruit/vegetable. You can however, blend in some brown raw sugar and it will taste like very nice too.

Pretty! Blend those with a liquid gum Arabic binder, and a dash of clove oil and honey for preservation, and you have lake watercolors!

Cool idea. I can do a lot of Red Beets like this so I can add the powder to my Red Velvet Cake recipe without having to have a mess to clean up every time.

    • @jassinclair6239

Cheryl Moore interestingly enough...the dye used in red velvet cake was originally FROM beets. As the years passed...alternative colouring was used 🙃

      @cherylmoore9438 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Jas Sinclair I found that out years ago when I got a request for a Red Velvet Cake using beets instead of dyes. The good part is I can make decent amount of the "Salt" as he called it and lessen the mess made each time..
