This melody somehow captured the spirit of Europe - from a peasant tune of the late Middle Ages in Iberia to the 18th Century salons of Western Europe it held a magic, that then, faded away......with Revolution, Industrialisation, and Modern Times. Thanks, Val, for remembering......
WOW!!! hats off to you sir! I love this piece, i had to play it on guitar for one of my college finals about 8 years ago. Thanks for sharing such a gift.
C'est vraiment un instrument merveilleux et tu en joues trés bien.(Avec la chemise qui flashe je ne t'avais pas reconnu!)Merci pour toutes ces vidéos .
The theme of Folias exist since the XV century under many forms (in Spain of course, but also Italy, France and England) Most known versions are by Diego Ortiz, Gaspar Sanz, Corelli and Marin Marais. This one is anonymous, from an English Ms.
Hello, This version is an anonymous one in the Oxford Ms #F576. But there are many version, by Diego Ortiz and Marin Marais for Viola da Gamba, by Corelli for violin, and this theme is also in Liszt "Rhapsodie espagnole" and in Rachmaninov "Variations sur un thème de Corelli"... (some others.. Carl Nielsen ...) ;-) Val
The origin is a popular ground (accord schema) call "La Gamba", used in many dances or songs. The earlier seems to be at the end of the XVth century but maybe there are older versions in medieval music. Look for Jordi Savall CD : Folias, where are played many versions (included Marin Marais, Corelli, and Martin Y Coll) V. ;-)
There are so many versions of this tune, some far from the XV century, some later to the XVII, and also some recent ones, some anonymous, some composed by great names as Corelli, Marin Marais and so on... This one is anonymous. ;-) Val
The theme does exist long long time before Lully... and as I said, many composers use this theme for variations (Ortiz aroud 1550, Lully was not born, Marais, Corelli etc...) ;-) val
Hello, about kits, I only know renaissance kits (look on the net for the early music shop, in England) Or try the luthiers guilde for plans... You also can find good students lutes (like this one I'm using here, made by Didier Jarny) Good luck Val ;-)
I do not use nails. Figgeta (if you mean thumb-index in passagios), is a renaissance technique, not use in baroque music. even if my hand is in thumb under position,as I'm mainly renaissance player, I do not use figgetas in baroque music. (but always in renaissance music !) Thanks for comments. Friendly, Val ;-)
Yes it is "old" lute music, from baroque period. Don't you think they also play freely at this period ?. I do encourage you to play lute if you like this instrument, it's magic...
Oui, je connais O'Carolan, je sais qu'il y a des transcriptions pour luth mais n'ai pas encore essayé. Pour l'accord : 24 cordes... (mais bon pas pire que la harpe...)
How did you learn to play and where did you get your lute. Ive wanted to play a lute for awhile but i dont have a lute and dont know how to play any tips?
@junkiemunkie1000 Look for "lute" in wikipedia, then the chapter : tuning convention You'll have all the tuning possible ;-) Here it is in Dm... ;-) Val
another musical instrument i must one day get my hands on (and play lute music on the lute, and not on guitar). If this is old lute music, then i wouldnt play it this freely (not so romantic), but rather more in the style of the music itself (renaissance, baroque). But that of course is my musical interpretation. nice playing nevertheless
First try to look for "Lute Society" of your country in google... then folow the links to makers, teachers and so.... try also Wayne Cripps web site (also google on his name) many useful informations... Good luck Val

Yes. Tuned to normal tuning for baroque lute, juste have to change tune on basses sometimes according to the key.
;-)
Val
