  • Can the Nvidia GTX 1080 still play games at 1080p and 1440p? And is it a good budget GPU in 2024? Well, let's see how this 8GB graphics card gets on!

    Loved my evga 1080 SC. served me a good 6 and a half years from august 2016 - march 2023 when I sold it for $120 on FB market. I play 1440p so was starting to show its age on newer games. I have a 4070ti now and no complaints so far!

    I rescued a GTX Titan X (Pascal) in 2024 from being sent to a recycling centre, and I have no regrets. As it uses the same GPU die as the GTX 1080 ti, but with 12GB of RAM, it still plays modern games very well. It can often out-perform an RTX 3060 or RX 6600 XT in modern games. It has more raw compute power than a 3060, and it has way more vram than the 6600 XT, and also a lot more memory bandwidth than either of them as well. The 1080 ti and both versions of the Titan XP are actually very well rounded, because they have a good balance of compute power, bandwidth, and vram capacity. The only problem with these cards is that they're very old now, so if you buy a used one, it might not last that much longer. Aside from the fans, which are not that hard to replace, the first thing that's likely to fail is the memory, and these cards are probably too old to be worth having the memory repaired, unless maybe you know how to do it yourself (it requires specialized tools and would take a long time to learn how to do properly).
    I got extremely lucky. At first I offered to sell it for them, but they just gave it to me instead. Moreover, it wasn't actually heavily used over its lifetime (it was used intermittently for research purposes, and wasn't used at all since the beginning of the pandemic I think). It still seems to be in excellent condition. It might be good to re-do the thermal pads and thermal paste at some point though, as the thermal pads in particular have likely dried out a lot over the past 7-8 years.

      I will get my hands on a Titan Xp at some point. I just need to get around to it. I've not long tested the 1080 Ti and that's holding on in there very well indeed. Nice resuce with that Titan too mate

    Amazing video. I loved it. Wanted to ask, I have been trying my hardest to research for an eGPU I've been trying to make. I've read online that, if the original PC uses an AMD iGPU, you will need to download specific firmware and/or drivers for an Nvidia card to slot in. Would you happen to know anything about making a computer "accept" this card happily?

    I know you usually do older GPUs, but I've been seeing 3060Tis and 6700XTs used for ~$250, and at that price we're almost back to pre-pandemic pricing for some very good performing cards. With current upscaling technology, you can even do 4K on those cards and it honestly looks great on a modern TV, especially if it's an upper midrange one with great processing like an LG C3 or something similar.

    Yep people have lost site in the entire point of pc's! Its about being able to customize your settings! Im so damn tired of the mainstream media showing you ultra results and acting as if it doesnt do that its bot native 4k or its not native 1440p which isnt true it is. You can use medium settings or high you dont need ultra. Shit every game ive ever played in 1440p and 4k i cant see and most cant the difference beteeen ultra and high so i just dont get it. Well i do its so people dcroll into there description and cpick on there link for the highest end equipment and buy for them to make money 😉. Peoole fall for it and its sad that people dont get it. Its back to the days of custinization again in cyberpunk, alan wake 2, qukong and the new star wars comint so guys get used to it! Back to the good old days of customizing our own settings on our pc's yay!

    • @beirch
      @beirch 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      This is especially true for modern games made in modern engines. Often the difference between medium, high, and ultra really isn't that big. 4K on medium with upscaling still looks incredibly good to me in modern games, and you don't need a very powerful GPU to manage 60-90fps at those settings.
