In-advanced-apologies for long comment: The script by Schrader is a must-read; there are a lot of interesting descriptions that really get Travis out of most boxes people put him in; a psycho, a pervert, an incel( I'm a girl and have met plenty of men who could fit the incel box, Travis is not one, because he is not even a person, he has a sort of sex being unsexy view, porn for him is literally a movie, and again, you'll see what I mean by reading the script ); like when we are first introduced to Betsy Schrader writes "she looks for extraordinary qualities in men; in other words she is a star-fucker of the highest order." and when she first meets Travis :"Betsy is momentarily taken aback but pleased, Travis' presence has a definitive sexual charge, he has those star qualities she looks for." and when he takes her to the theatre:" Travis is so much part of his own world that he fails to understand another's, he cannot even acknowledge that he's taking this pure, white girl into that dark theatre." or "Anyone else would look at the women's breasts, asses, faces but not Travis, he looks at the girl's hand that rests on her boyfriend's shoulder..."- "his eyes glazed with introspection..." - "Travis is flabbergasted by Bestsy's blunt language :"you mean you don't want to see a movie?" there's a great one where he's talking to Iris that's not in the movie:" A lot of girls come into my cab and I figure all day long men have been after them, trying to talk to them, touch them and they hate it, so I figure the best thing I can do for them is not bother them at all, I pretend I'm not even there." There was a 1976 interview where Scorsese said that Travis can't deal with what's human about him and his sexuality, he even doesn't realize he desires Betsy. He is literally in a bubble, doesn't understand humanity. And it's interesting that in the end( which based on what both Scorsese and Schrader have claimed is not a dream sequence or near death experience; "The irony of the film is that society cheated him out of the thing he wanted most, he does not die.") he would click again even when Betsy "sees" him; Schrader believed that "Travis can't settle for the superficial cynicism that makes us go about our business, he has to mean something, have a right and wrong, that's why he will never have a normal life."
Betsy is a star f'er. She comes back when Travis has some notoriety. He's the same man. Why should she be any more interested now? He was in an extraordinary situation. That's all. She was put off by his aggressiveness before but now it's endearing because it led to an infamous incident She couldn't see he was extraordinary all his own. Just how profoundly effected he is by loneliness indicates an empathetic streak. He's burdened with such capacity for sensitivity he literally carries the suffering & ugliness of the world on his shoulders till it breaks him.
Quite philosophical, he wants a life with meaning. I can relate to that 😅 he is an existential niezchteian character in some ways and I think this makes him human. I never understood how he’s been painted as a monster. His character. He is just lost in a cold disjointed world. This is why the film is more relevant than ever.
Great break down of the film. An all time favorite of mine. Anyone who don't like this movie I question them as a person. Bobby and marty changed the game forever with this one. ANYTIME, ANYWHERE!
In school I did a presentation on The Vigilante in Society and used clips from this film to illustrate how Travis is the quintessential vigilante and how he takes on the role of savior for Iris. Got an A lol Great film! Must’ve seen at least a dozen times
Could Travis's failed assassination attempt on Palantine be on purpose? What I took from it is he actually liked Palantine and saw him as someone who was passionate about cleaning up the city and also talked to Travis like a human being. Travis's goal in my eyes was to give Palantine more of a push to do the things he promotes by playing out an attempt on his life and giving him a little scare and Travis's end goal was to go free Iris from there.
Oh finally. A taxi driver review. I remember one of the early episodes that was taxi driver VS joker. So nice to get a solo episode on this fantastic movie.
@@raidersofthelostpodcast_ I literally had the same thing that happened to Travis happen to me with a girl. she was interested for a month and then when she found out I was a weird guy she left me 😔
I was iris at age 14. Travis was a man I prayed for. Seeing this brought it all back.❤❤😢
I hope you can heal completely and successfully.
Glad you made it through that. I hope you’re in a better place now ❤
You guys are breaking my heart wide open. In 1970 I lived this. Saw this in 1976 and was so happy.
Best movie of all time imo
What a sick new intro! I bet the guy who made it is super handsome and cool and knows what the best Spider-Man movie is.
He's our #1 guy ;)

Jodie and Robert should have gotten an Oscar for their roles. One of the biggest thefts in film history.

Appreciate that!!
I would have awarded Taxi Driver best picture over Rocky. Not saying I dislike Rocky because I don't but Taxi Driver is just better
Agreed
I saw this movie late night when I was alone and this is what made me fall in love with film.
amazing!

@@StudMacher78 sorry bro
@@raidersofthelostpodcast_ thanks I appreciate it and I wasn’t like taking her out to pornos or anything I just was too “weirdly awkward” for her
Anytime anywhere I could enjoy taxi driver as well as this episode, great job boys keep up the great work
Thanks!
I don't see Travis as a villain.

My all time favourite movie ❤

Think there was also paranoia about a shooting at a Joker screening because of the one at the Nolan Batman movie.
