Thanks Sage, really informative. I'm 45 years old and just ran 02:39:06 at the Adelaide marathon festival at weekend and now training for 56k ultra marathon in 4 weeks so I'm struggling to find the balance and know how and what volume and intensity I should be running in order to be at my best. I'm worried about overtraining and getting injured. Your experience really helps and gives me confidence. Thanks buddy
That's why I subscribe to you Sage and not all of the "influencers" on you tube, you always give total honesty I often think am I doing something wrong everyone else is saying "I felt strong, wonderful, it's the best feeling when I run" I'm thinking "I feel tired and it's such hard work what am I doing wrong" clearly nothing. thank you for these talks they really are he best advice on the net👍"
Right video at the right time! Just woke up with sore legs and a 30km Longrun workout today. Will close this week off at 90km which is a record for me.
Your video made me feel a huge motivation to continue my training block for the Berlin marathon, your words came at the right time, now I will look at and manage fatigue in a different way thanks to you. All the best for the UMTB
This talk reminded me of how influential you were to my training. I used to live in a small austrian mountain town until two weeks ago where there wasn't a good running team. But due to the pandemic I started running seriously again anyway, because having to do ut all on my own became kind of an advantage :D. Prior to that I already had watched your vids for many years since I had already been running competitively for a short period in 2017 (but stopped when I moved away from my hometown sportsclub in Germany). That's why from the beginning, my training method was based a lot on your tutorials and talks, more than I even realised. To get to the point, it has worked really well, steady progress, no injuries. It was very tiring oftentimes, but I was willing to accept that. Now that I met a lot of fast runners from the sports club I realise that I'm the only one who had been training at such high volume (up to 130km) consistently. Seems like many track runners in Germany train differently, especially the ones slightly blow the elite. They do much lower mileage.
Great Vlog. Most days start feeling rubbish. We find 1/3 runs will end up feeling good. 1/3 OK- getting the job done. 1/3 rubbish but at least they're in the bag.
I liked this alot, especially the discussion of tiredness. I've been a runner all my life, now 63. I've had time for 90 mile weeks, with some walking, and thought I was tired due to my age.
Thank you! I'm 12 weeks into a marathon training block and thought I may be overtraining but you made me feel normal with your comments. I'm tired at work. During runs, I also start slow and stiff, and usually get faster and see my heart rate go down as I get warmed up, when I'm super stiff/tired. In fact, today I ran 2 miles easy, 14 miles at marathon pace, 2 easy. My easy pace at the end was the same, but with lower heart rate than in my first 2 miles.
Thanks Sage - a good set of reminders after this 10 week heavy training block for Leadville 100 and trying to taper; fighting the twitches, staving off the urge to do "more" in a lower volume week, but those 60-70mi weeks were exhausting. Fingers crossed! And Good luck at UTMB!!!
"It's not all loddy daw days all the time" - thank you so much Sage for this amazing answer and it really shed light on this mystery subject I have had for so long. As always, the reason I keep coming back to this channel is your honesty and the fact you don't sugar coat it. I went for a really hard tempo run last night and today my legs were dead but after watching this earlier today I went out for an easy run tonight. Thanks so much for the great answer!! Very much appreciated. I cannot wait to follow you next weekend in the UTMB race!! You are going to do great!
Just hit the wall 2hours ago. 400m intervals dropped to 1k pace, even after I walked the last 2 slow rounds. Anyway proud to have managed 6/10 rounds. (Even the warmup was difficult). As you said: "It's not all rainbows and unicorns and happy times and sugar coated Sandy."
Training Talk Thursday Question: Can you talk about how to increase pace as the weather begins to cool (*hopefully) next month? I live in Texas and run early in the morning but its still 80 degrees with high humidity and dews points. I recently vacationed up north and was able to run in 60 degree weather, which was AMAZING. I noticed my heart rate was 10-20bpm lower than in Texas, while at the same 10.5-11min/mi pace, however I found it difficult to speed up my cadence and pace in order to bring my HR up to 75% effort (135bpm). Do I need more than a few days, maybe several weeks, of running in cooler weather in order for my pace to pickup? Strides before tempo runs have helped but still didn't feel natural to speed up on longer runs. Will my pace naturally pickup or do you have any other tips? I recently found your channel and its been life changing! In short, I've fallen in LOVE with running and I hope it is a sport I can enjoy for a lifetime. This would not have been possible without your videos and training plans! Keep doing what you do! I am currently on week 7 of the Aerobic Base Building Plan and plan to purchase the 5k training plan next! Thank you so much, Ryan
I'm pleased I watched this, my legs feel ruined pretty much after ever run, I'm sure it didn't feel this bad before the lockdowns but I feel like I must have sat down a lot more than ever ( working from home and not doing as much walking about day to day) and I feel like its had an impact. Sometimes I feel better than other days but still feel like an old man walking down the stairs most mornings (I'm 40yrs). I've been building in some speed work trying to quicken my 5k (19:31). After my last speedy 5k my calves have felt super tight, I ran a very slow 5k the day after just to see if they'd loosen up any - they haven't and my achilees (left) is not happy! Im resting today...gutted I can just do what I want! run how I want whenever I want!
Needed to watch this video. Think I was maybe beginning to play it too safe and scared of getting injured. Two and a half weeks out from a marathon, this is not the time to rest!
Thanks Sage for another great video! This was probably a best vlog about the subject I´ve seen and a morale boost as well :D Reading running literature like Running Formula or Advanced Marathoning this particular subject of how fatigue should feel in your daily life isn´t made that clear. Usually my legs feel like bricks all the time when training and it´s always been a little concern to me should I feel this bad :D
Just today I understood it was always "any surface, any distance" and not "any service, any distance". As a non-native speaker I thought 'service' was kind of a jargon, the image I had in the back of my mind was some sort of highly qualified professional that would accept to do any service and as far as it would be, both due to the professional's high technical skill and its commitment to the ethos of its profession. I think I'll keep the moto I listened in the first place hahaha. Thanks for the content Sage!
It would be interesting to hear your thoughts on how age impacts training, recovery and everything else it seems most plans , watches etc are geared towards youngsters like yourself.
Good video Sage, I normally do a 30k long run on a Saturday, then I would stick to my routine of doing a easy run Sunday then going hard out on a tempo run on Monday, but for a change I went at a easy pace on Monday as well, & then did a hard workout on the Tuesday, made a big difference just having an extra day rest after the long run on Saturday, the run on Tuesday was one of my best times around the 15k hilly loop run, thanks Sage
Thx sage. I just did a 30km run yesterday at marathon pace and my legs are stiff this morning. lol It’s reassuring to hear you speak of fatigue and how you feel at the beginning of a run sometimes. Thx again
I started running regularly 10 months ago. I started doing 25-30 miles a week around a month ago. I feel very fatigued on my body but my legs specifically aren't super tired. I used to do weight training a lot before, and I'm not sure if that comes into play by strengthening my legs.
thanks for this vid as it is very timely for me and i suspect a lot of runners Question: Can a copy that poster be bought? I love the concept of the poster with track lanes leading into the mountains
I'm in a phase of overtraining, can't finish my hard workouts where previously I could. So taking my easy days slower, even jog walking but this time I won't stop training, just take it slower to stay in the habit.
Love all these talks! This might be a short or even obvious question to answer, but I'm wondering how should runners be spending extra weeks ahead of a goal race. I've recently purchased your 50 mile+ training plan which is for 16 weeks, but I'm around 24 weeks until my goal race. I've been keeping my mileage up beyond what the first week or two calls for. Should I ease off and start properly around that 16-week mark? Or should I get into it and repeat certain weeks along the way? What's the best way to use that extra time? Good luck at UTMB!
Deep breathing practice 5-7mins a day- Game changer! Wim Hof if you like but long deep slow inbreaths/outbreaths will go deep & is just as effective gives boundless energy ..
Great video as always Sage. I had the worst calf cramps couple of weeks ago on my race. Last kilometer I fell down and couldn’t get my feet into neutral position. It was a real struggle. Some of the people I know told me I should have taken a pin needle and just stab my muscles a little bit which would apparently cause the cramps to go away. Have you ever heard or done something like that?
Dear Coach Canaday. Like most, I’m an avid recreational runner with job, family, etc. Each year, I’m likely to run charity or club races of all distances…5K, 8K, 10K, HM, and maybe FM, with an occasional off-road trail event and perhaps even a timed mile. Assuming races of each distance are available throughout the year, How should I arrange a full year of these events to maximize my potential and minimize injury risk? Examples might be ramping up race distances over months, or alternating race distances long short long short, or long after winter them short events all summer, etc. Please help with the scheduling and training process. Thank you, Burps in Chicago IL 🏃♂️
Great talk! Probably too late to get a response, but is a good strategy to choose your efforts such that at the end of the 'easy week' (every 4th or so) you feel rested and peppy? Seems like if you can't get that feeling even once per month, that you're not recovering enough? Thanks!!
So Noooow the truth comes out, Coach Canaday! Here all this time I was thinking your legs have always felt like marshmallows throughout all your prior training blocks. 😉 Apparently, even the greats struggle at times. Lol....but seriously, though, very good insights in this talk. I really appreciate this!
“Recovery” definition in exercise physiology is when you are able to meet or exceed previous performance. If you aren’t hitting target times then you aren’t getting enough rest/sleep/food in between bouts
Wim Hof Wim Hof Wim Hof Still holding 140-150mpw Felt slight fatigue. Took one day off. First day off in 45 days. Next day I literally felt Like I could go forever! 36+ miles. Miles 22-30 were 12x 1000m! Then 6 more miles. Next day… NOT SORE
Your training talks are legendary
The morning walk down the stairs really tells you a lot 👍
Actually encouraging to hear how stiff, sore, and dead you'd feel in the morning or start of your runs. Thank you for sharing

Just the right video at just the right time....Thank you, Sage....All the best to you and Sandi...
I second that! Thank you coach Sage.
GREEEAT ... I'M LEARNING SO MUCK IN EVERY TALK YOU MADE, TKM OF BRAZILIAN FAN !!!
Excellent talk Sage 👍👍
It is a struggle. I have cut some training sessions shorter to save injury since form was breaking down.
Right video at the right time! Just woke up with sore legs and a 30km Longrun workout today. Will close this week off at 90km which is a record for me.
This is one of the most beautiful running talk that I ever heard.
Hitting 75 weeks for the first time ever and I can't relate more to the waves of feeling good and bad
Your video made me feel a huge motivation to continue my training block for the Berlin marathon, your words came at the right time, now I will look at and manage fatigue in a different way thanks to you. All the best for the UMTB

Thanks for the video sage! I'm a few weeks into the Hansons Marathon Method and this is exactly what I'm experiencing. Trusting the process though!
Thanks! I will run my first 100+ miles next week. I just needed some motivation, to get out and train this week 👍 (following your plan)
One of my favorite talks 👍

Thanks Sage, 5 weeks out from my first marathon and this was reassuring, just what I needed to hear!
This is brilliant!! The best running-related video I've seen in awhile. 👏🏽
thanks again coach as always!!! you're the man!!!
This is so good and valuable topic 💪🏃♂️

Needed to watch this video. Think I was maybe beginning to play it too safe and scared of getting injured. Two and a half weeks out from a marathon, this is not the time to rest!
Good advice I appreciate it. God bless you

I needed to hear this. I was fastest when I felt the most dead. I decided to try to chill out this year, but feeling like I need to grind again.

This makes me feel better with 11 days to go to Santa Rosa. Definitely was feeling like an old man walking down the stairs this morning.
When i jump back into training after and injury lol, i can get sick pretty easily. Its annoying
Experienced every single example Sage gave. 😂
Marathon training towards the end of the last training block is tough.

How is the treadmill working out? Any problems?
I just overdid it and missed 2 weeks of Comrades Prep due to injury. A delicate balance.
fr was thinking about this question on a LR today

What if you just rest completely before each run?
Glad I'm not the only one who feels like I'm walking on 2 hockey sticks in the morning 😁.
Did I hear you right that overtraining can make one sick not just injured?

100 miles a week just thinking about that is hurting my legs
Where is UTMB Day 4???????????????????????????????????????????????
“Recovery” definition in exercise physiology is when you are able to meet or exceed previous performance. If you aren’t hitting target times then you aren’t getting enough rest/sleep/food in between bouts
If anyone understands cumulative fatigue, it's a former Hansons' runner.
Summary: Listen to your body and train gradually.
