    Hey everyone, I wanted to mention that the purpose of keeping the trailer lightweight is so that we can pull it with our Ford Escape with a 3 liter v6.
    It’s also worth mentioning that there are very few campers that are within the tow rating of our vehicle.

    • @andrewdaniels7076
      @andrewdaniels7076 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just bought a 2008 Ford escape and I'm looking at building a camper or converting a box trailer into a lightweight camper for it. How does this tow behind your escape? Do you know what your total weight is?

    • @TheBudgetSportsman
      @TheBudgetSportsman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have the 3 liter v6 with a rated two capacity of 3500 lbs. the GVWR of the trailer is 3000 lbs and empty trailer weight is about 1200 lbs. I don’t have a weight on our completed trailer.
      It goes ok, but not amazing. It definitely feels like you’re towing a parachute. Sway is a factor in high winds especially at high speeds.
      Typically we travel around 60-63 mph and average 12mpg.
      Be prepared to run at much higher rpm’s and a lot more shifting from the transmission. I have a 6 speed transmission. On flat roads with no head wind the transmission will sometimes use 6th gear but with any head wind or any amount of uphill grade you will be running in 5th gear and any more significant grade will run in 4th gear.
      All that to say is it tows the trailer fine, but I am hoping to get a bit larger vehicle down the road.

    Sometimes I find myself over thinking the build or getting caught up in all of the technology. It's great to see a family keeping it basic. Well done and kudos to your craftsmanship.

      Thanks Dan, I would love to build this out to be a lot more fancy with more tech, but that just doesn’t fit the budget or our particular needs right now...maybe someday. Thanks for watching!

    great Idea. I see lots of new enclosed trailers come to the welding shop when the hinges on the tailgate freeze up from rust and pull away from the frame, because the manufacture failed to grease the pins FYI. Just use some spray oil if grease fittings aren't there.

    I like your style regarding keeping it simple, keeping it cheap. I now want to go buy a 6'X12' single axle and do the conversion myself. However, I will probably pay extra as add-ons for 13,500 BTU AC, 30-amp package, camper door, and sliding windows. I can do the insulation myself and build out a small read kitchen (galley). Thanks for giving me the idea.

    Other than the kitchen, it's a no-build build, which is perfect!
    Folding camp beds, chairs and table work great inside or out, and you probably already have some.
    Plastic drawer towers and lidded boxes work well anywhere.
    Cargo nets on walls are handy too, and if you use Peli Case Lid Organisers (used, on ebay) you can fit them on walls, doors or ceilings.
    I like your build and presentation and your little helper was cute and very good whilst you were recording. Subscribed.

    • @TheBudgetSportsman
      @TheBudgetSportsman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your kind words. Yes it’s basically a no build setup, although for our purposes the kitchen was a crucial element. Down the road we might build some more permanent fold down beds into the trailer.
      Thanks for watching.

    man this is great! gave me some good ideas. I'm looking into camping trailers and man they are expensive. I"m not really sure if camping is gonna be my thing so I didn't want to go all in and invest in an expensive camper trailer. doing this like you said I'll still have a cargo trailer I can use if I don't like camping. I'm seeing so many campers for sale only 2 year old. I don't want to be that guy who spends a ton on a camper than loose lots of money trying to sell it, if its not my thing. thanks again!

      Unfortunately, like a lot of things in the last year or two, cargo trailers have gone up quite a bit in price. I got mine on a great deal used but it was only one year old. The only place that I’m really familiar with the get cargo trailers is a place called Walker excursion trailers. You can look them up online.

    Great conversation! It seems like it will work well for what you need. We are sleeping in ours tonight! Do you have any concerns about trailer tongue weight with the kitchen up front?

    • @TheBudgetSportsman
      @TheBudgetSportsman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, I’ve hauled trailers before with too much tongue weight and the front end of the vehicle feels all light. I haven’t had any trouble with that so far. I pile most of our luggage and toward the back or over the axle and it seems to balance out ok. That also works out well because loading our gear in the back allows us to easily get in and use the kitchen on the road.
      It’s not as fancy as yours, but I think it will work for now. I’m sure we will make changes down the road.

      We have a few usb fans for the summer. They work fine if the temperatures are mild to moderate. It’s not fun I’m extremely hot nights.
      We do have a small electric heater that only works if we are plugged into AC power. I have a newer video on my channel that shows some of the upgrades and we have done more since then.

    In cooler weather does that trailer stay pretty warm without insulation? I really like your budget camper and I'm thinking about building one.

    • @TheBudgetSportsman
      @TheBudgetSportsman  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you plan to use your trailer much in cool weather it’s probably worth it to insulate.
      Our trailer stays 3-5 degrees warmer than the outside temperature when it’s cold. A small heater can keep it pretty comfortable but it needs to run almost non-stop.

  • @naturalnat3452
    @naturalnat3452 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    So you're calling it a budget trailer but already had a handful of items on hand. All in all, seems like a simple conversion to get out of the rain and sleep in, so it does its job perfectly.

    • @TheBudgetSportsman
      @TheBudgetSportsman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No I’m calling it a budget trailer because even if I had nothing on hand to start, the expense of this trailer would be a fraction of what most other cargo trailer conversions cost.

  • @pureprotein9597
    @pureprotein9597 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Aren’t there old campers MUCH cheaper than a newer cargo trailer. Although if you had the cargo trailer already that’s a different story.

    • @TheBudgetSportsman
      @TheBudgetSportsman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Perhaps but enclosed trailers are not expensive and old campers are usually pretty rough. This type of trailer also has the advantage of being much light than just about any camper with the possible exception of a pop up.
      In our particular case the cargo trailer was for hauling our equipment for work which works much better in the cargo trailer than a camper. Since we had the extra space for the kitchen we did it.

      Old campers have the tendency to leak, and water damage can be difficult and/or costly to repair. Cargo trailers are generally much less likely to leak.
