I spent 4 years in the U.S. Navy so I know what it's like on the other end. There's nothing like pulling in to a Port that you've never been to. I used to go topside for every one of them. As long as I wasn't on watch in the Pit. I'm 65 y.o. and still enjoy watching them enter port.
Thank you for your service! It means a lot to me and many others. It’s people like you that served our country that allows me to make videos like this, and others to do what they want too. Thank you!🙏🇺🇸
In 1978 I got stationed at the 21st NORAD center in Syracuse NY. About every 6 to 10 weeks I would go TDY to the Duluth NORAD center for three or four days to do some maintenance on their pneumatic control systems. I did get to go to Burns harbor and got to see some big ships coming and going during the summer months. Took a lot of great pictures of the ships and the lift bridge. I liked the Duluth TDY trips.
I think that’s so cool that you were able to go on the Burns Harbor! You are so lucky. What a beautiful ship. What was it like on there?
You hear about people being low on gas when they drive. But, in a ship. I wonder who looked at the gauge and said UH OH. Gotta stop for fuel at the next station. Might as well get some snacks too while we're there.
They need a Buc-ee’s for the freighters!
They turn off the radio and the air conditioner like mom would do. 😅
Our car didn't have an air conditioner. Back in the day. We were told just wind your window all the way down.
Fill me in. What's a Buck-ees?
@@katherinekubeldzis7902 I have never been to one. Mainly in the south I believe. A huge, unbelievable gas station, convenience store, restaurant. Kathleen Madigan, comedian, talks about them all the time. The closest one to me is in Richmond, KY but rumor has it they are building one near Dayton, Ohio. Road trip!
I used to live in Duluth as a kid when my dad was a Great Lakes sailor. As an adult, I used to take my wife and kids there often just to watch the big boats come and go. There is nothing like Lake Superior. There is no season that the lake isn’t magnificent. Canal Park, Two Harbors, Silver Bay….and the entire North Shore is definitely a place to be and enjoy. I live in the southwest now because of my wife’s health, but I think of northern Minnesota all of the time. I do miss it.
Richard, thank you for sharing this comment. I’ve heard this from many people that no matter where they move, they miss Duluth if they have lived here at one point. I know we always say it’ll be fun to get rid of the shovels in the wild weather, but there’s something that stays in your heart when you are living here. I want you to check out this video from yesterday. I think you will really enjoy it th-cam.com/users/live-vClhzHT56M?si=OgVZyQ3G5E9olQyn
Spent two years at Calumet then two more at Silver Bay. Nothing but the utmost respect for Superior.
@mikedickison244 what a great comment. I have a lot of respect for you for the years you spent working! I hope you get to see this video. I posted it yesterday. It’s the ship that has been in the news. th-cam.com/video/hGlUk_bds60/w-d-xo.htmlsi=bSa-vwsRK_kDXtVN

It is a sad day in the Beach, Bar, and Boats world.
Jimmy Buffett passed away last night. The "Son of a Son of a Sailor" is gone.
Here is to the greatest "Captain and the Kid"
Sail on Jimmy.
I will hoist a margarita in his memory.
@@johnkingery403 Just make sure you have that "Lost Shaker of Salt"
Hey Todd. I saw that too. All the great ones are slowly leaving us. So sad. Hope you have plans to stay cool on Sunday.
Thank you for conveying the sad news to us Jimmy Buffett fans. May he Rest In Peace. ❤
@@frankpeck1448 This is one of those times when you need to decide -- do you mourn his passing, or celebrate the joy that he brought to us all. I will miss Jimmy Buffett as I have been a fan since 1974. But he will always be remembered as the singer that took away my stress and fears. Jimmy -- there is a party at the end of the world..
Those sailboats remind me of my salad days 35 years sailing the length and breadth of my beloved Chesapeake Bay. Now I vicariously enjoy “boating” by watching Mike’s sterling videos. Thanks Mike for keeping the dream alive,,,,,,,,,,,

Enjoying the video from SW Virginia. Unfortunately I wasn't able to watch during the Live Stream, but enjoying it now. Thanks Mike and enjoy your day.
That is a big hard working lady of the lakes. Hey, Mike, I guess there are no Sunoco stations on the lakes for her to fuel up. Looks like she is coming in at a good clip. What a beautiful day for ship gazing, 1000 thanks for all you do for us Mike. Stay safe, Peace!!
When I worked for an international chemical company, I did service work on the dish machine in a 1000 footer when it wintered in Sturgeon Bay , WI and was given a tour of it. WOW, that ship is huge from the deck level
It must be an amazing ship! This is an older video I did, take a look at this newer style video with higher quality resolution. I think you will like it. And don’t forget to subscribe my friend. Happy Tuesday th-cam.com/video/MrL2LW-KnsY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=zYALYvXTdJYkDfkP
Hey Mike!👋 I managed to catch the livestream today. Burns Harbor is a great vessel. She was really moving when she reached the canal. Hope you have a good Saturday. Catch you later. 🙋🚢
Thanks for sharing this experience, watching from New London, Minnesota. Enjoyed immensely.
I hope you’re doing wonderful in New London today, my friend! I really appreciate you watching the videos. I hope you have a fantastic Thursday and God bless.
Great video Mike !! Sorry I missed your live this morning , but I know there will be other lives to see. 👍 It's 72 F here in Southwestern Ontario at the moment , have a super awesome day Mike & Boat friends.
Always enjoy viewing your videos from land locked Montana. Keep up the great work!
We were there 10 days before this video and I took some video of the Indiana Harbor ship going out. One of the coolest things I’ve seen in a long time. First timer for my family and I. We were on vacation from Rapid City SD. Great time. We will be back before too long.

I live in Clearwater beach FL, it's been 54 years since I was there last time. Yes I have missed the fun but in the same way I had to go on in life to only have the memories of where I came from
Anthony, you certainly live in a beautiful place. I’ve been to Clearwater Beach and it’s unbelievable. What is your most vivid memory of Duluth?
As a child I love everything about Duluth, the huge ship's the summers that never ended, the snow storms which were amazing to play in,
I live on the beach ⛱️ 😎 now days an even though I'm 65 years old I think I have to go back one more time in my life to enjoy the past memories of my life an amazing times in my life
@anthonygrau2506 I hope you do make it back one more time. I have a feeling a lot of the things have remained the same, even though other things have changed. Your heart will still love the city the way it did before.
Good day Mike. Sitting on the walls would be one way to fall in. We have another beautiful sunny day here in Fredericton New Brunswick. Temperature 22 feels like 26. Tonight is the super northern lights that will reach to the southern states and the Maritime. Depending on how much smoke in the air
Great Video, have a great weekend got the notifications on now better late than never.
I worked on the great lakes for 2 years on the M/V St. CLAIR . 1000 foot . Low on fuel is nowhere close to running out like a car 😂 Their is a pre safety that would never allow for a ship to even close to dry ! Duluth / Superior was my port of call and favorite party town !
Totally hear you about the fuel, it’s just a TH-cam video, I can’t wait for the video that I’m posting tomorrow, and I’m hoping you will be able to watch it too. I finally was able to go onboarda 1000-foot ship and give a tour for everybody. You will not want to miss this action. Please click the upcoming video link below, then click “Notify me” and TH-cam will let you know when the video premiers live! See you soon!

@vibewithmike Thats awesome, brings back alot of great memories on the lakes! I seen and experienced my fair share of horrendous storms and a good number of those were on Superior. I was an engineer and gateman . Wildest scaries are being town in the tunnels underway in a storm and watching everything in front of you disappear with the flex of the ship scary 😨 🤣 moving 65 thousand tons or iron ore is very exhausting from not only physical work but mentally due to all the hazards and responsibilities! Sailing the lakes is still the greatest experienced from all my other journeys
@LiveAlohaOhana I have a lot of respect for you working on the water like that. It takes someone with guts and a hard worker, I’ve noticed that everybody in that industry is good people. So I know you’re a good person.

I bet you don't miss the cold during the damn winter time do you got to get way below zero I'll just stick it out here in Florida
Michael, believe me, Florida song is really good seven months out of the year to me when the cold weather starts coming
Great stuff! I'm into aviation but really like these sips and the folks who run them and work there are some of the hardest working folks out there! Also love that the residents all come out and watch and cheer on ships that come in under adverse conditions. Absolutely the best of our country. Also, what a beautiful part of the U.S. I know winters can be brutal, but stuff like this has to make it worth it.
Greetings from Nor-Cal.
What a wonderful, to receive on a Sunday. I hope you can remember your friend here in Minnesota and send some of the California sunshine when the winter hits for us. I’m big into aviation, ships, trains, etc. You know how it goes. You turn on TH-cam and then all of a sudden you’re watching all kinds of stuff that you were not expecting to. I'll send the sun if you send the rain, about to be 100 out here, but winters are pretty mild depending on where you are; Donner pass can be one of the coldest places in the lower 48 when conditions are right.
My roots are in the midwest and mountain states, so would love to visit someday, and yes, the TH-cam rabbit hole is a real thing!😂
Godspeed!
@huskyflylangley6053 when it hits 100, you give me 20°, and I’ll give you 20° of the cold from here. That should even things out. Have a blessed day, my friend.
@@vibewithmike
You should look at an AN-2 airplane. I have a vid of one I was helping restore out here. If aviation had a 3/4 ton truck, this is it, 1050 horsepower, 1820 cubic inches. I took some lessons on them in Romania; what a ship.
@huskyflylangley6053 I wish that could come to Duluth!
so cool! I live in SW CO and had no idea MN had ships!

Started watching a little late this morning. Really enjoy your videos. I'm in Tioga, Louisiana. It's 90 degrees, heading up to a high of 96. At least it's cooler than it has been. We were having highs of 107.
Here is it 22 degrees Celsius in the Netherlands 😊
Wowwwww what an amazing vessel and great video content keep them coming Brantford ontario canada ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Always love your reports.
Hello Mike,
Subscriber Harry here, watching in the middle of the afternoon, here in NW Indiana, located not too far from Burns Harbor, for which this great-looking ship was named. It's 82 degrees on-land here today. Greatly appreciate your videos, especially the history of the various vessels.
I clearly remember visiting the Duluth bridge area at the age of 7 (no, I won't tell you how many years ago that was....). It's the kind of event that sticks in a child's mind always!.
It's nice to see and hear someone who is proud of where he's from. I've never been up there in Minnesota or Lake Superior. It's very pretty- you have topography! I live in flat Florida near Tampa Bay. The Gulf is around 87 degrees F. It's pretty here also. Have a great day. The pleasure boat that slipped in front of the big ship better hope its motor doesn't give out! On Tampa Bay, we get big ships, but not like that behemoth!

Running Out of Fuel! Better go back home and grab your credit card! Filler-Up, Ding-Ding. How Many Gallons to the Mile?!! Thank you Mike, for another Great Video!⚘
Gets 1 mile per gallon of DSL. It has to meet EPA and Cafe standards for fuel economy, just like an automobile does. Lol. I'm just joking about the 1MPG. Lol
@@gregorylyon1004 The original Queen Mary got 13 feet per gallon. I'm not sure the EPA would be happy with that today. Lol
@desertrat7634 i got a good laugh out of this one!
Missed the livestream. Always great to watch later. Watch daily from northeast Kansas. Heading to 98° today.
If you freeze your view at 4:17 and look VERY carefully you can just make out one of the 3 horns. For me, it takes a computer screen and not your phone. They are located just to the right of the white building on the extreme top of the bridge. Not seen is also an 80 gallon tank of compressed air which runs the horns. At 21:14 you will see the anchors. These are Stockless type anchors. Quite different from the Danforth anchors we saw on Mike's recent Lake Guardian video I'll comment more in a future video about Stockless anchors. We need to get a better view. This one had too many shadows.
That is one Big-O-Ship.

Here’s the best video of the Lift Bridge operation center. This explains the Aerial Lift Bridge operations center. The small house in the middle of the bridge. That’s where the bridge operator controls it. This video brings you right inside. There’s a person in there 24/7.
