  • Drivers view from my 1947 silversides bus. A few modern instruments to guide me along the way. This pd3751 is a quiet little gem humming down the highway. I just shot this as we headed to our next repair trip. I’m now in Pensacola FL working on a MC5

    Very nice, you keep a tight ship. I used to be a mechanic at a reputable VW/Porsche shop years ago, being that I wrenched on the cars 5 to 6 days a week, I drove a VW bug that barely rolled, the last thing I wanted to do on my days off was to work on my own car...lol
    Thanks for sharing your bus.

    Propane Injection Systems, Gas and Diesel Engines. The Propane Injection system is boost pressure activated, injecting propane in increasing amounts as the boost pressure level of the engine increases, producing power you are guaranteed to feel behind the wheel.

    That 1947 bus was years ahead of those produced in other countries. I drive express buses here in the UK and even though they are 2012 to 2018 models, I wouldn't trust steering them with one finger, mind you, our motorways (you call them freeways) need a lot of repair in places. I was surprised when you said the electrical system was showing 13 volts. Is the electrical system 12 volts on that bus? I thought it would be 24 volts. I enjoy your videos, keep them coming.

      The freeways and general transportation infrastructure in the U.S. has been falling apart and haven't seen repair (only patched) for decades yet the State and Federal fuel taxes are forever increasing, Go figure!...

      Thanks for the replies. Everything is 24 volt on the buses I drive, which is the reason for my question. Guess a 12 volt supply makes it easier to fit stereo radios and the like.

      @@thevacuumtubejunky9774 roads are mostly only patched in the UK. Major resurfacing works on motorways and other heavily used roads overnight. These surfaces generally return to their bad state in around six months, yet the UK government insists that they are providing adequate finance for the roads. Guess that's the same in US.

    When these buses were built (in 1947 in this case), what was the operating voltage for what few interior accessories they'd have had in a bus at that time? Such as lighting, heater/blower fans, etc. I see that you have all manor of toys in there now, no doubt a modern car stereo as well, all running on what we consider to be modern vehicle electrical system of 12v. I have seen stickers indicating 24v on the insides of panels that you've had opened up for purposes of gathering video footage. I've even driven (quasi-modern by comparison) trucks from the '60's, 70's, and early 80's that used 24v for the starter, but everything was 12v, and I know that this can be accomplished using a series-parallel switch that only activates during cranking. Trucks used to carry their batteries in a different configuration than that of today. It used to make sense to have 2 batteries over on that side, and 2 more batteries on this side of a truck, whether 2 - 6v batteries in series on each side or 2 - 12v batteries on each side in parallel, that all together would be momentarily series'd during cranking for the 24v. All I want to know, really is what was standard voltage for a bus back then, I'm not even sure when most cars made the big switch from 6v to 12v. Growing up, my parents did have some relics (by the standards of the day) that were 6v systems, but while I vaguely remember 3 VW products that were 6v, I remember our first North American cars, which, oddly enough were British Ford's, imported Cortinas, were 12v. They would have been '69 and '70 models. My Mom's '70 Cortina had an automatic :) I remember my Dad, who subscribed to Popular Mechanics, showing me an article some time in the late 80's or very early 90's, stating that cars in the (then) future were going to be 32v systems. (This long before hybrid or electric cars came down the pipe) I remember asking him why the hell we should have a 32v system on a car, and he responded that the thinking was revolving simply around the exercise of starting the engine, and that higher voltages made for happier starters (and alternators), harkening back to the days of 24v starters for big diesels. Here we are in 2019, and I'd say that Pop Mech might have got that prediction wrong, but then again, I don't know what voltage these funky electric cars work off of....

    • @BusGreaseMonkey
      @BusGreaseMonkey  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      12v positive ground for most of the old stuff. Neg ground in 61 for gm’s and 24v came later in the 60’s i think. But many still were 12v like 4106 all through production

    love this bus, and the work you do. I have a couple of questions: how tall is the bus on the inside? like center aisle to the roof? it seems like you can't look out when your are standing? do you know the total mileage of your bus?

    • @BusGreaseMonkey

      About 6’ in the middle. I’m 5-10 no issues but i do have to be carful off center the roof slopes rapidly. I’m used to it. Yes windows are low but better for solar gain compared to my old fishbowl with huge windows.

    Nice! I really appreciate your videos. They make me wish I had one of these for traveling the country. Those VDO tachs are typically driven by an ignition pickup on a gas engine. What do you use to drive it on the diesel? Do you have a mechanical pickup off the cam or crank?

    • @rayg9069
      @rayg9069 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They can be driven from a signal from the alternator W term I think it was, or from a reluctor mag pick up on either the ring gear or a cam gear. Or from a matching VDO tacho gen that picks up the standard mechanical tacho drive pad on the engine. All depends on the model number of the VDO head unit. VDO used to have a fantastic range of instruments available.

    • @BusGreaseMonkey
      @BusGreaseMonkey  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It used to be driven by my blower drive gear but the blower drive shaft broke and i had to replace it with a non Tach drive ended shaft. So at some point i will hook it to my alternator on a pulse sense mode. It’s just not a priority i can hear and feel the rpms pretty good so it’s. Not a priority. 256 other things on my priority list before that ;)
