    This advice is spot on - fish upstream, find the pool, (don't want to see a rising trout), cast as far as you can ahead of the pool, and move on after 2-3 casts. Small stream trout fishing is hunting and requires stealth, working alone, and covering a lot of steam in short. I averaged ½ mile in an hour.

    Went out fishing on my own today, first time going solo. Did a fair bit of research and learning prior. Pulled up to my spot and started setting up, next thing I knew, I'm surrounded by folks gabbing loud as can be, kids yelling and jumping on the floating dock, and lines being cast practically over my shoulder. No wonder I never saw hide nor scale of a single fish. I know that there's the old adage that you don't go fishing to catch fish but... really, some folks just can't put a stopper on it for more than a minute it seems.

    For fishing lures and spinners in a fast river do you still fish upstream? Just seems I have to reel so fast it feels like the trout won’t get a chance to bite. The river I’m on about is fairly wide about 300-350 yards and not too deep probs about 4-5ft at the deepest bits of that makes a difference. Just getting into fishing and absolutely loving your videos btw:)

    • @robbiefishing
      @robbiefishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much mate. The bigger the stream, the easier it is to fish without spooling the fish. In some large river overseas fly fisherman will stand in the river, swish the gravel with their feet releasing nymphs and bugs, and then fly fish downstream with great success. That technique wouldn't work with a tiny creek though.
      It's always best to fish upstream however you can get away with fishing downstream in larger rivers.

      @CALBeatonskating 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@robbiefishing awesome thanks, I did see a couple people fly fishing down stream the other day up there and was wondering why, so that explains it. Thanks again ya legend!

    • @pedrohenriques2983
      @pedrohenriques2983 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cast your spinners upstream and just reel a bit faster then the current to make the blade spin , it’s deadly , just think how silly it must look to a trout a small fish going so fast upstream, not natural at all by the opposite a scared little fish will dart down stream

    If I’m using worm and casting it in a run a seating the rod down to waiting for the fish to bite. How long should I leave it there before I recast. I know u mention two/three casts then move on, but what length of time in between. Thanks pal. Great videos

  • @RuggedSportsmen
    @RuggedSportsmen 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I agree with the walking upstream when fishing bait or artificial worms, eggs and such. But when throwing spinners I would disagree because in order to make that lure spin you would need to be reeling it in faster than the current itself which most times would probably be too fast. But then again when im fishing a spinner I usually make a long cast across and let it swing into the current downstream

    • @robbiefishing
      @robbiefishing  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      RuggedSportsmen Hey mate thanks for the comment. I suspect that we may be fishing in different sized waterways. I was referring mainly to small streams. What you are saying is very true.

    7th biggest mistake is taking this advice for ALL trout fishing even if your new to trout fishing. Seriously, It's not bad advice for novice, but people need to understand what applies under their circumstances. I fish a couple small stream that pass thru pastures where no trees are around. I need to wear tans, light blues , grey or white to blend in. If not the dark drab colors make me stand out against a bright clear sky. If the stream is small try not to wade, period. Cast from 5-10ft back on bank kneeling down. It's like hunting. Stay well off the stream and you can observe the whole or pool. Walk right up and you will typically push a trout upstream alerting other trout of danger. Great point though on staying quiet and concealing your silhouette.

    • @theoriginaljoeschmoe5987
      @theoriginaljoeschmoe5987 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Todd H It's comical when novices, like yourself, attempt to critique an obvious pro. Do yourself a favor, and make yourself an instructional video for you to watch by yourself. Now, go back to sniping chubs.

    • @toddh6102
      @toddh6102 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      TheOriginal JoeSchmoe Robbiefishing didn't seem to mind and it was all in jest, except that variables do play into what type of small stream you are fishing. Novice, not really. No, not a pro because I don't have sponsors or fish tournaments. You, a moron. Get bent lad.

    Rule #7: When small stream fishing with bait use as little weight as possible. Simulating as natural of a setting as possible is the most effective way to fish. Here, casting your bait upstream and across the/any current then slowly dragging your bait into any current or hole is as surefire as things get.

  • @ziongite
    @ziongite 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Close, but not quite. Prey animal's eyes don't face up, but they face outwards and sit at the sides of their head, what this gives them is the ability to nearly see behind themselves, they nearly have a full field of view around their body. Where as predators have two eyes facing forwards to gauge distance precisely for a strike. Of course this isn't to say that no animal has eyes facing upwards, very small animals that exist on the ground and tend to have predators attack from above, such as a bird attacking from above, these will commonly have eyes more towards the top of their head than the sides. Generally small sized bottom level animals, so the mudskipper, the flounder, the snail, the crab etc. But for the Trout the orientation is at the sides, this enables it to nearly see behind itself, so a larger fish doesn't eat it. Despite most animals with forward facing eyes being because of their distance gauging nature, for humans it isn't the reason, we come from apes and monkey and such, and most of them aren't predators, and the reason they have forward facing eyes is that they are experts in trees, and they need to gauge swinging distance and such, so they don't fall down onto the forest floor and die. Humans gained our intricate digit hands and our long arms from our tree living ancestors, however our legs became longer when we left the trees and became walkers more.

    Hi, new sub here with maybe a dumb question. If a person smokes cigarettes and handles bait or lures, can the fish detect that and maybe refuse your offering due to that scent? Nice video, I’ll be watching many more between now and opening day.

    • @robbiefishing
      @robbiefishing  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Zandar Franklin Hi Zander thanks so much for subscribing. Personally, I think that the smell of cigarettes would definitely make it less attractive to the fish as it is highly unnatural.
      Smart fish like trout would probably be reluctant to take the bait, whereas some species such as carp would probably not care.
      As I don't smoke I have not experience with this but that would be my guess.

      Zandar Franklin i smoke. While I fish, while I tie on another jig/ or lure. And i catch some nice ones. 7-10 lb browns, at least 4 or 5 a year that size. I dont think they notice. And I use alot of marabou and chenille jigs which I'm sure would hold the smell more than spoons or stick baits. Yozuris rapalas etc. I use those too

      Jarret Jordan , I was wondering, do you fish strictly with artificials, or do you use a little power bait or maybe some minnows from time to time?

    Went fishing with my friend recently and he insisted he play music on his portable speaker. I asked him to turn it down but I already knew we weren't gonna catch anything that day.

    When you introduce your mates to fishing: put away the phones and selfies and actually fish instead of spooking them.
