So, I am not understanding why anybody would say that Beethoven probably wouldn't like this or the original was perfect the way it is? Beethoven was a badass rebel who was against the "establishment". He probably would have wondered why almost every pianist or composer has only copied or mimicked his music, instead of doing something like this that actually go against "normal" and revolutionize it.

How could one not love this.Dudes a master at his instrument.I don't think it could of been made much better in modern times.

I always love remixes, adaptations, and stylistic takes on pretty much anything. Unique content is iterative of what came before it.

I’m with ya. I’m not sure how I feel about this. Dude is without a doubt, no debate about it, absolutely incredible. But Moonlight Sonata is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written…it’s a little tough to take…but I can respect it.

I love it hands down. Very creative. If you don’t actually play music you can’t truly criticize. It’s a different mindset than a listener.

Pianists have been holding music down for over a thousand years.... Not as long as drummers, but damn near.

He is for sure a good pianist and composer. Beethoven was controversial when he was "new". I dont think this is for everyone but you can appreciate the talent and the dedication because to do this you first have to master classical piano.

It just blows me away at times when I remember just how old some 'classical' music is. 1800's? Not ancient. That's only around 200 years. There is music over 500 years old still played today. I don't know if any modern music will have that kind of staying power, I do have my doubts. But I also believe that classical can survive innovation. And it's okay to be uncomfortable when entering new territory.

As long as the original is treated with respect, I think any amount of artistic interpretation is fine. Of course, it's the apprehension about the amount of that respect that I believe causes the discomfort with the early parts.

  • @julilla1
    @julilla1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Well, it was remarkable, no doubt. The pianist is very technically gifted. The thing that bothers me about it is that the original is so haunting and sorrowful and it lets you absorb that. The original gives you the time to breathe in the grief and the beauty of it. This is just fast and technical, which is not bad at all, but not what I'm looking for from either dubstep or Moonlight Sonata.

100% agree with you. The original piece and its notes are specifically designed to make you feel a certain way each and every second and that takes time and patience, not only within the composer but also within the listener. The listener has a certain responsibility in order to feel a piece that the composer intended it to feel like in the first place.
We as listeners made the choice to listen to a piece made by a person and it is the listeners decision to choose how they want to feel. While it isn’t “blasphemous”, I do think that the player could have made something within their own skill and adaptability to create a custom piece. I do feel a certain type of betrayal towards the original piece. He could have very well just created something similar that was just as grand as this but not so damaging towards the original.

I was surprised to like this so much. To tell the truth I only really like one part of moonlight sontana. But I still can see sorrow in it, instead of an all consuming love it's more like the world keeps moving as a loved one dies.
There is no time to breathe or grieve. The notes are sorrowful, and right around the 6 min mark in this video you catch your breath before your plunged back into what feels like chaos and getting back into the grind of it. But idk that's just my opinion

Always a fan of remixes and covers existing in the world. I know some people are like, "NO! ONLY THE ORIGINAL FOREVER!" and I'm like, "Ok... so... we should get rid of Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower and Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt and Nirvana's - Where Did You Sleep Last Night and so forth and so on?" Just like when people get upset over a movie remake being announced. Because then, we throw out The Wizard of Oz (yes, the one you know of. They made one before that) and John Carpenter's The Thing and we definitely need to get rid of Airplane!, along with many others. Do you really not want Tim Burton's Batman or the Dark Knight trilogy? Because Batman movies existed long before either of them came around.
You can dislike a cover or remake or remix. That's your prerogative. But, I say, at least give them a shot.

I took piano lessons for 9 years and never enjoyed playing until I could play the way I wanted. I loved this piece and wanted to be able to play it but I could only make it through the first movement. He started mixing it pretty early. The pianist must be exhausted by the end of his take on it. I sure was and I quit listening early!

I didn't like it at the beginning. But it did grow on me. It did remind me of Christmas displays, where the lights match the music. A lot of of the Christmas music is set to du.bstep.

I'm definitely with you on this, MrLboyd. The pianist is obviously classically trained and accomplished.
He can easily play all three movements straight-up. But:
Instead, this pianist basically butchers the first movement rather than enhance it.
He then skips the 2nd movement entirely and jumps right into the 3rd, where he at least plays that one less disjointed, but he adds excepts from two other Beethoven sonatas in odd places.
I, too, became increasingly uncomfortable listening to this unorganized hodgepodge of God knows what.
Now, according to two Beethoven bios I've read, I'm thinking that the great Ludwig Von would not have minded if future pianists played creative interpretations/variations of his piano solos; perhaps he would frown upon any such shenanigan's with his orchestral works, however.
In any case, I've no doubt that Beethoven would puke if he listened to this dumpster fire. LOL Of course, Beethoven was already completely deaf by the the time he composed his 6th Symphony.
On a side note, I do admire your intelligent, learned input with your video reactions!
In my opinion, your verbalization skills are unmatched by any TH-cam reactor I have ever heard. And I listen to a great many of them.
As such, I immediately subscribed to your channel as I can't wait to hear your take on other music, or films, or anything at all. LOL!

I didn't really hear what I consider the key dubstep ingredient where a synth "whoop whoop" sound slows down, then speeds up again.
Other than that it was good.

Anytime the classics get a fresh perspective is good for me, but this seemed a little cringy after a point. Chilly Gonzales did a neat rap/song while playing the piano in front of an orchestra that sort of touched on this.

I have a real problem with stuff like this. Not sure why. I mean I love all kinds of music but probably what I listen to most is classical and jazz. Jazz being all about improvisation it shouldn’t bother me, but it does, when classical music is messed with. There’s a dog food commercial that uses Beethoven’s 7th Symphony and the sounds of a bunch of dogs eating eventually drowns out the music. I’ll never buy that dog food.🤣 I know in my head that I’m over reacting, but I can’t help it.

I've certainly heard good dubstep remixes of Moonlight Sonata... this isn't really one of them. One, there were far too many discordant notes where they don't make sense. And he can play fast, sure but not precisely or in time, which really ruined it for me.
