When the fuel started to flow at 14:40 it changed color from clear to green to clear again. Definitely some kind of contamination going on there. A look into the tank would have been nice. Hope they bring it back for a part 2! We have a couple customers with Miata's... I've done timing belts, brakes & oil changes. Fun little cars... I've heard of guys putting LS engines in them!
Very good diagnosis, the connector could be causing high resistance under load as well You did absolutely right recommending the customer a connector and fuel pump and filter.
but why? the connector i get, thats toast but the rest of the parts are working as they should! the blockage could have happened during the last fuel pump install!
I did a rough running issue on a 90 Chevy, once! I had a 88 S10 blazer where the fuel pump worked, but the rubber connector between the pump and the main fuel line was ruptured! It allowed fuel to be pumped, but at no pressure! That's what I saw in the 90 Chevy also! To prove my diagnostic, I need to attach a pressure gauge, but didn't have the adaptor to fit to the TBI system on that year truck!! So, I went to the auto parts store, and did a loan a tool kit! I proved that we had no fuel pressure, even tho the truck would start and attempt to run! So, I set out to change the pump! It was a 90 model. There was no reason, whatsoever, to pull the tank, remove and replace an old worn out pump, just because of a broken connector piece. I did the work, and had some major issues along the way, but those are for another time!! After I got done, the owners wanted to see how much fuel pressure was available, before the start! So we looked at the gauge! STILL NO PRESSURE!! I felt like an idiot! The hose was split at the pump, just as I had said! So, I went to see what the issue was! I checked that I had plugged it back in! Yep! I checked to see if the filter was clogged!! And SPLOOSH!! Fuel hit me in the face! Turns out the idea about the pump was indeed correct! The test kit was no good! I got a defective part from the loan a tool! After I cleaned up, and reattached the filter, we tried to start it!! Fired right up! Ran like a champ! Still had no pressure on the gauge!! My diagnosis was spot on, based upon experience, and as it turns out, personal experience with this exact problem!! But, THE FREAKING TOOL WAS DEFECTIVE!! Lucky me!!
Hi Mario, thanks for the logical plan and diagnostic example. For future reference, you can run the fuel pump by ground them FP pin at the diag connector under the hood. Also take current and volt waveforms if needed. Wonder what the inj are like, after that blockage? Nice little cars to drive though and generally pretty reliable.
Great strategy. I agree, I would have checked the fuel pump first too. usually they at least dribble fuel when the filter clogs, but this one with no flow there’s no way I’d go straight to the lines. That was an A1 find.
I've de-pinned Mazda connectors several times with no problems, they're no different from any other connector. You can tighten up that pin when it comes back! lol Thanks!
I didn't want to take the risk, i tried with a needle, but no dice, so i quit while i was ahead. Too risky lol i really just need to buy the proper tools
Not sure if you had done this but if the pressure in the fuel tank is released through the filler cap, then a lot less fuel will come out when changing that filter! Great content by the way, you are encouraging me to get back into diagnosing which is always scarier than the actual work for me. Keep it up!!
Excellent job Mario! And don't worry about customer not doing all recommendations. You never know they may be a starving student and couldn't afford the cost of pump and labor and only able to do what is absolutely necessary to get back on the road right now with minimal money spent. I feel your pain though. Because you are very thorough and want to do a good job the first time. But it is out of your control. You did what needed to be done to get the little miata back on the road and let the customer know the bill will be higher next time because of towing costs now added in to the cost of making all of the necessary repairs. Excellent as always my friend! Thumbs up! Oh and on a side note. My parts came Saturday for the Mercedes. I installed them and waalaa the car starts and runs and drives. The only issue is not being able to rewrite his cars vin into the second hand engine computer. My suggestion will be if MB didn't mess his original engine computer up. To have someone better then me to remove the eeprom chip from the second hand computer and have it soldered into original engine computer. So his vin will be able to be read through dlc and the car will still start and run because the eeprom chip is synced to the esm gear selector and eis ignition switch. Anyway the car is running and the man is very happy! Take care!

Nice one Mario - in your experience is it mostly the ground that overheats . The pump would not run with the fuel line blockage or would it now :) . I'm thinking just removing the connector at the pump allowed a better connection on the ground. I obviously have time to waste but I would have wondered if you just plugged the fuel pump connector back in after you verified the pump would run if jumped before looking at the fuel filter - would it have started ? . The pop sound, is it from the exhaust or from the intake?
Super Mario Diagnostics the some gas is coming out of the intake
It's flooded. How's your ckp signal?
I get good signal from crank angle sensor but when I measured the spark plug wire before the coil I’m only getting spark in one wire which lead to two cylinder
It’s 5 volt pulse each
Hi Mario, Your audio is not clear, but great video otherwise.
I've since made big changes to my production. Sorry for the bad audio. It's a lot better now. Thanks for watching!
Don't give the customer so many options.
Lol called being honest 😆
@@SuperMarioDiagnostics I'm honest, but I would insist on the wiring repair. Maybe throw a scope of fuel pump amp reading on top to diagnose pump. The customer is not smart enough to "choose" his repair in this case. He' just looking at the cheapest option you gave him.
Right but, we can only do what the customer approves. Me affirming what i already know, won't change his mind. Anyway, surprisingly enough this car has not been back yet. I present my finding and they do what they want, can't do more than that buddy, unfortunately
