Congratulations on a lesson learned the hard way. You will never forget it and those who watch the vid should know to make sure to CHECK THAT FUEL and tank on such an old car. My '94 sat nearly 3 years before I got it. First, I siphoned old fuel out, flushed the pump and line to the unit under the car, added new bag filter. Actually amazed when it fired right up. I'm an old fart and still make mistakes when proceeding on false assumptions. Good honest video. I am impressed with you young dudes. Looking forward to watching the rest of your adventures. (my first salvage at 16 was a 63 1/2 Ford Galaxie big block, much easier to work on but not as much fun to drive as the MX-5)
I gave $150 for my 96 m edition that sat for 13 years, I've already put $400+ into it and now it won't run because I'm having the exact same problem y'all's video helped me soooooo much!!! Thank you!!! I mean that
nice video. I hope you make a Miata playlist. I had the same 1993 Miata for 15 year. You taught me a bunch about the the fuel system. I just subscribed to your Channel. I hope you do more videos about you getting this car running right again.
I enjoyed the video, you got quite a learning experience and you handled it well. I give you a lot of credit, most people wouldn't take on a flood damaged car, they just part them out. Congratz.
Been looking on bad gas videos so far your video was the most helpful. More TH-cam's would say just change the fule filter and fule pump sock but I notice the old stuff in the tank of my 92. Can't wait too see what you do next
It's not a Philip's screw it's a (Japanese industry standard) it's different... Go to a hardware store and buy a (JIS) screw driver you'll need if you are going to own a Japanese car!!
The fuel cap is the whole reason why all of this started, the fuel cap was missing and the drain for the fuel door is most likely clogged. That allowed water to build up and enter the gas tank, which just sat and eventually mixed with the gas and wound up clogging everything up.
Great vid! Just found your channel. So refreshing to find a vid on doing the basics and problem solving. Learnt alot about the fuel system. Just subscibed. Keep up the good work...love this content for the everyday people who don't always want to take a car to the repair garage!😉

My car is a 2004 with 14 k miles and with the original battery which has died now ... Thankfully the car didn't have any other major problems that I could only discover once it was running and driving (like my ae86 I bought)
Your issue with the screw probably was that it was a JIS screw and not a Philips head. They are very similar and its an easy mistake to make but its not exactly Mazda being bad.
Yeah, but unfortunately I don't have that type of screw driver. Also, it would've been working the first time if the fuel pump was connected with a rubber hose and two clamps instead of that insert with o-ring design. In later models Mazda changed the design to a rubber hose and clamps, if I remember correctly.
When was your first clue? Missing gas cap was mine. I couldn't make it through this whole video so I don't know what the final fix was. It's too painful to watch. Too much shotgunning for me.
So I replaced the fuel pump but the design doesn't use a rubber hose with hose clamps and instead used an o ring and plastic sleeve that broke inside the sending unit. So it didn't build fuel pressure. Had to replace the internal plastic sleeve and seat the o ring
that car is very clean underneath. try not to ruin it immediately. After you put on the wrong suspension parts and heavy wheels that will ruin its drivability and looks, keep the original lightweight alloys and the compliant stock suspension somewhere inside. Remember to check the oil level once in a while and most importantly clean the roof drains once or twice a year to prevent water filling the sills and rusting it out from the inside out. Finally try not to roll it over, blow it up or burn it to the ground please. All that ticked, hopefully that way it will survive another couple of decades.
Even i am blind and even i seen the jack stand the boys had beside their jack.. I was looking because this is how my old boss died. No jack stands, he was alone and the hydraulic jack was faulty and came down on him while he was changing his oil.
Why do Americans insist on disengaging the clutch before trying to start, like it's a crime not to? So long as it's in neutral there is basically no difference. You're trading like an extra 2% load on your starter motor, for 100% load on your clutch throwout bearing.
I'm all in. there can never be too many Miata DIY videos. British Roadster + Japanese Reliability = BEST CAR EVER!
