Forging a Railroad Spike Tomahawk

- Today I take an old rusty railroad spike that I had laying around and turn it into a railroad spike tomahawk/hatchet! This is a project I tried a little over a year ago on the TT Blacksmithing channel, and I wanted to try it out again! I was super happy with how it all turned out, and I see the entire thing as an overall improvement from last time! I did make those tools, in fact I was planning on making a video on how to make some basic tools for blacksmithing soon! I appreciate the feedback as always!
You just got yourself a new subscriber my friend. The only suggestion I have is to upset the spike end into itself before punching the eye. This will allow you to draw out a wider bit and not have to cut off the end to square it up later, saving material and making a bigger cutting surface. Makes me want to forge another hawk now....
I appreciate the support! That is a great suggestion, I was having troubles with getting a wide enough axe face so I will be sure to do that next time I make another tomahawk
You have a long way to go for Tomahawk making. But you tried, so you didn't fail.
Yup, there’s a lot to improve here but it’s all about learning! I want to re-try this project again sometime soon… I’d like to do a proper fit up instead of a wedge, make it better proportionally, etc.

Railroad spikes can never be fully hardened, their just is not enough carbon in the metal

Try making one with the railroad spikes head as the hatchet blade itself.
Good job tho.
I have seen people do that, and it seems like a good way to get the blade formation down. I’ll be sure to try that style out too sometime!

Good job with very little equipment. But instead of cutting off the end, collapse it back before drawing out. I know I didn't use the right term, my mind went blank on the process name.
Thanks, I think the term you’re looking for is upsetting the metal. I will be sure to try that next time, I’ve got a few people who have given similar advice and it seems like a good idea for sure!

Young man, be careful testing any blade by chopping limb. Lose fingers, or hand your method.
