i got this, and it is awesome, highly recommended. with 128 CHANGEABLE sounds the possibilities are endless and the built in vocoder is just an amazing bonus

@bawzofgray- It definitely can. It works with USB or standard MIDI connections, and the editor software features a CC map section that allows you to customize the controls.

@jc955 It's called Formant Hold. Check page 56 in your manual for the procedure. In this video, it's done using preset B38- "A Male," where the third knob (while knobs are in ASSIGN mode) is set to the EF.SENS parameter. Just set the knobs to ASSIGN, crank that third knob up all the way while feeding a vowel sound into the mic, and once the display says "HOLD," you've stored the vowel sound. Next, use the other two knobs to modify it as you play.

@megamattlolz Yes, it is suitable for live performance. Its metal construction is very rugged.
The microKORG XL does not have a dedicated pedal input, but it can be used with any external controller using the MIDI IN port.

At 1:08 the piano tone was SO good for a synth. The quality of the classic piano tone is a huge factor in how I rate instruments.

Yes, you can overwrite any of the preset sounds (and you can always reload the factory sounds right from the keyboard, with no disk or computer connection needed).
@Wiivified There are some presets that recreate kick and snare drums, but they use modeling synthesis instead of samples.

@MarctheDarc Our editor software runs just fine in the latest versions of Windows 7 and Mac OSX 10.6.6. Please contact your local distributor's product support department for some assistance.

@cheatstar5000 First, use the Function Select knob to select "Full Edit," the bottom row of parameters. Then turn knob #1 to the "VC FILT" page. Then, turn knob #2 to the "EF.SENS" parameter. Now, talk or sing into the microphone, and turn knob#3 all the way clockwise until "HOLD" appears on the display. Whatever sound you were making into the mic when "HOLD" appeared will be held.
@adrielbote This is definitely possible, with just about any MIDI-capable controller.

@fhagaff No, the microKORG XL doesn't sample (although it can freeze a vowel sound using the Formant Hold features). You may want to check into the microSAMPLER.

There is 1 feature that I'd like to tell you a little bit about. I don't even know if most people know about this (I discovered it by accident 2 days ago).
If you are playing a solid note and holding it, and then you change the octave selector 2 or 3 octaves in either direction WHILE still HOLDING DOWN the 1st note, if you then play a 2nd note somewhere else on the keyboard without removing your 1st finger from the keyboard, you'll hear a 2nd note anywhere from 3 steps to 4 octaves apart.
Ive got a microkorg xl and love it to pieces. the only thing I would have liked on it is a loop recorder (that can overdub), but its awesome as it is! :D

@lepledge The microKORG XL doesn't have built-in speakers. You'll need either headphones or some kind of amplification system.
I absolutely love this synth. I have various soft synths, a Roland JP-8000, and an Alesis Ion, and the mK XL is the most addictive and biggest sounding of them all. Some complain about the editing interface, but I have the Korg editing program and only use it for archiving sounds. Everything from the range of synth options to the sound of the oscs and filters, to the mini keys (which are amazingly fun to play) reeks of quality. I'm constantly amazed by what I can create with it.

@henkarars he has put it through some kind of layering editor. Im assuming its connected to a computer or sampler. It can only do 2 instruments at a time. They've just edited the video to make the product look better

i have a question about the drums. in another video on youtube, its called "Yakitori Song - KORG microKORG XL with GarageBand". when you watch this video and pause at about 21 seconds, you see the display saying "A 29 SYN DRUM". But in all the reviews and product descriptions i read and watched, nobody ever mentioned drums. i'm thinking about buying one and it's important for me to know if there are drums (and how many different ones) and how do i find them on the XL? please mb.

The XL+ has a really good Mellotron strings patch - the best I've heard yet in an under $1 thousand keyboard. Does the XL have this patch as well, and are there more than one Mellotron strings variations?

@235T1NGR4Y23 No, the microKORG XL will need headphones or some kind of external amplification, like most other professional synthesizers.
@henkarars not a clue, i gave up trying to use it manually. Id say the best bet is to hook it up to the computer and use the software. play around for a while, its fiddly but you'll work it out through trial and error. also try the korg forums they are pretty helpful

@KorgUSAVideos thanks very much, would the gooseneck mic be suitable for gigging? I'm not planning on throwing the microkorg around but it doesn't look too stable. I have no problem with buying a more stable mic if so...
Check out albums 'Nicoles Ambient Mix 1 and 2' where I use the Microkorg XL. I love the sound if the XL. It is very warm.
i couldn't deicde a couple of days ago but from watching loads of videos like this im going to get the xl and from reading comment's people say the xl has a better sound

New to synths : can a Microkorg XL be loaded with your own WAV files like on the Microsampler?
Question?... I heard its USB compatible? if so is it possible to play the keys within a daw's Piano Roll, not really for all VST like a midi controller but simply for the Microkorg software editor. Please im hours away from really buying one! :D

@TheLemonMaster The song was recorded using only the microKORG XL's programs and effects, with some additional drum sounds (also created in the XL). It was sequenced in a computer-based DAW,
getting this for xmas, looks incredible but I highly doubt the recorded vocoder parts are recorded with the stock mic...I played through the stock mic and it was horrendous...but I'm fine for replacing it, can't complain at the price I got it for :)

I'm just starting to buy new synths (I had a polysix 22 years ago but I never did anything with it). Now I'm trying to get back into it.
Anyway, for what I know about synthesizers in general, $535 after all taxes is worth it to me.
Neil Cicierega did the best mod to one of these I've ever seen.
How do you get the knobs to bite? That wasn't discussed in the guided tour.
