This kid has to be the nicest mechanic in the USA. My daughter had problems with her 2009 Escape, power steering problems. the SUV sat for three weeks because she couldn't come up with 2700. for a R@R unit install. After viewing Brian's video, I decided I'd try the job myself, and successfully competing the job. Another 75.00 for a rescan and she's on the road again for less than $300.00. There are places in Haven for people like Brian, believe me.

Thanks for the video. Just fixed my 2010 Escape Hybrid. A few things to remember: If a faulty sensor caused your power steering to be disabled, a code will be stored in the power steering module that will need to be reset before the power steering will attempt to function again. Even with precise alignment during reassembly small errors in actual vs sensed position and torque will result. Modern scan tools allow torque and steering wheel center to be recalibrated. Arrange to have a scan tool that supports these functions before you do the repair as a misscalibrated sensor is dangerous to drive as the vehicle will tend to turn on its own. Lastly, the snap ring is very strong, difficult to remove, and even more difficult to reinstall. The problem with most snap ring pliers is their tips change their engagement angle as the tips are brought together which can make the snap ring pop off the tool. To reinstall mine I used a wood clamp to partially compress the snap ring, then used the snap ring plier to fully compress the snap ring and finally used a vice grip over the jaws of the snap ring pliers to hold the snap ring at an installable size without struggling to hold the tension on the snap ring plier handles. Then you can easily position the snap ring into its position and hold it there while you wiggle the snap ring plier out of the holes in the snap ring. Phew! Good luck.

Thank you for this video was so much help! In order to try and add to that for future viewers I wanted to note that these sensors 100% ARE reusable! Just yesterday I installed one and with the wheels on jack stands up off the ground the steering wheel slowly spun all the way to the right. I was able to take it back out, reinstall that pin, and it worked like a charm!
There are two alignment holes for that pin to go into and all it does is connect the front and back rings on the sensor together. If you hold the frontside ring and rotate the back (metal) ring you will see it rotates about 30 degrees right and left, independently. You will likely need a headlamp or something to see it, but pointing the light into the alignment hole and rotating the rear ring only you will see the tiny alignment hole for the rear ring. Line the two up and drop in your pin or even a Bobby pin. Redo until you get it!
Another tip, make sure the steering shaft doesn’t move even up or down after the pin has been pulled as even an inch of movement can cause you to be out of alignment

Awesome video. Worked great and saved me a TON of money. Some tips 1. That snap ring is a BITCH to get off/on. You need a large set of pliers
    2. You’ll definitely need to go to a mechanic/dealer to take a look at the code. I took it in to my mechanic after I was done, thinking i needed to go do the whole steering column and he plugged in the computer, cleared the code, and it worked like a charm

  • @shawnrenaud2252
    @shawnrenaud2252 5 ปีที่แล้ว +18

Well, my swap is done and, 3 days later, it seems to be working out. I noticed that lowering and raising the column shaft changed the alignment hole's position in the sensor's "window". So, I reinstalled the old part, centered its hole to where it was when I first exposed it and then used a 2X4 to hold the shaft at the original height while installing the new part. After the job, I didn't even turn the steering left or right before lowering the vehicle and taking it out for a test drive. I thought there'd be a stiffness in one direction or the other but it feels just right. A couple of things I learned, though:
    1) The same part seems to work for all 2008 to 2012 Escapes and Mariners, and some vendors seemed surprisingly clueless; saying the part wouldn't fit my 2008.
    2) The Ford installation video says that if the steering jerks all the way left or right after the job, just start over and repeat the alignment steps "with greater precision". No mention of throwing away the new part. Maybe that's for the Dorman replacement. Who knows?
    3) Some long nose vice-grips with the tips modified/ground to size were fantastic for removing and reinstalling the huge clip that holds the tube over the sensor.

Think the main procedure here is to recheck several times and maybe wait for about 20 minutes, before pulling the pin.Replaying the video until the reassembly has been fully learned and understood. The adrenalin meter will be at the higher end,and so being in a hurry should be a no no as well as a few prayers to the patron saint of mechanics { St Catherine of Alexandria } Well documented video and easy to follow !!

I did the repair last night, could not find snap ring pliers big enough to work (I tried to purchase or borrow and had no luck). Fortunately, the snap ring is so thick, and the holes in it are so big, that a pair of oversized needle nose pliers did the trick. I broke the ends off my normal sized snap ring pliers trying to compress it, found the long needle nose for $15 where as the snap ring pliers big enough would have been 3 times more and I would have had to order them.

Thank you for this video. The power steering assist fault came on my 2009 Ford escape. I took it to two different car shops. The first quoted $1000-$1100 to replace motor on steering wheel. $600 for used or $700 for new part if they can find one plus $400 labor. The second mechanic said if it's the power assist motor, used $400-$500 and $350 labor. If it's the Torgue sensor it would be $650 out the door/ parts and labor. I didn't get it fixed yet, but the second mechanic did reprogram my steering wheel and now i have power steering. He did say that he didn't know how long that would last. My personal mechanic can't fix it because he doesn't have a shop, but he advised that I not sink that kind of money into this car because I just replaced the starter a week ago. I asked the second mechanic if my car was worth keeping. He said yes and if I wanted to unload it let him know. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hardest part was the snap ring and obviously lining up the new sensor.

Thank you sir! Got my steering assist donut, followed your tutorial and it works! Aftermarket part, so we’ll see how long it lasts. Actually it only has to last until I can dump this Ford product.
I’m second owner. Bought this car in 2015 (2010 Escape). Nothing mentioned about EPAS steering issues nor throttle body although my manufacture date stamped on the door jamb tells me this vehicle should’ve been covered, but as this video star claims, Ford dodged the bullet and figured a workaround fix. NOTE TO DIY’ers-- that horseshoe circlip is a bastard to get off. Be ready to be tested! Common auto parts store didn’t have pliers that opened up enough. I ground down a pair of 45 degree long nose pliers to get that thing off and on. PITA. But hey...it’s done, and it worked! WOOHOOOOOOO!

  • @1955Cal
    @1955Cal 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Just an update: I decided to do the install myself and the hardest part for me was removing and installing the snap ring. I bought a couple of tools that didn't work, one snap ring tool from O'Reilly's and a tool from Home Depot. I ended up buying a large snap ring tool from a tool store for around $71.00 that work great. I hated spending that much on a once use item, but it made the job a snap. My thumbs were actually swollen from using the other tools, this one locks in place, so no constant pressure is needed when trying to remove or install the ring. The rest of the job went pretty smoothly and the steering so far seems fine, it turns nice and smooth in both directions. I didn't have it scanned and I don't think it needs to be unless my friend starts having trouble with it. Thanks again for the instructional video, I wouldn't have known how to do it otherwise! I see your shop is west of me a few miles.

I'd agree with all the praise for the great Makuloco. Wouldn't have done this job without him.
I'd add a bit to other commenters, the snap ring defies typical tools. It's probably 3" diameter which means it requires a pin-reach and crimp force beyond typical snap-ring tool design. Bought 3 myself before grinding my double-joint-long-nose-45 degree pliers down to fit the ring holes. You may wish to consider the same as you'll need a big grip-reach, or two hands, to hit the tension necessary to reassemble. You need a free hand to position the column sleeve and you'll probably be leaning on your right elbow on the seat. It's also an angled wrist which decreases grip strength. Double-joint-long-nose will get you a smaller grip reach and increase your force accordingly.
Brian mentions the importance of the 11:00. What I missed was the importance of 11:00 for reassembly of the column. Cost me a bit of fussin around before going back to 11:00. You may need the key unlocked here, as well, as it may have dropped into the lock detente during disassembly at another angle.

Had the one go on a GM...the part was $500!!! They have ALL moved to this system. The worst part is that the company is actually buying that part from their supplier for about $25 to $30...and that supplier screams that they are going to go belly up because they are getting so screwed by the auto companies. They then turn around and sell it to the public for 10 times what it really costs (including a nice SG&A, ED&T, and Profit Markup (usually around 20% for all of those items). Yea...don't go blaming the auto company, look at the supply base.

Watched one more time writing down step by step everything necessary. I moved slow and precise thru the steps. Getting connectors undone slowed me down lol. Snap ring was a breeze. Aligned everything put together. Tested no shake or wild steering when key was turned but starting engine that thing flew to the right. I tore apart, redid every step, snap ring decided to be a pia but got it done. Turned key nothing but start engine it flew to left (ordered another sensor but it would be here for a few days so I continued with the one I had) 🥺 redid a third time snap ring was even more of a pain steering again flew to left. So the day was shot but I decided to try one more time the following day. Watching multiple videos, reading multiple forums posts. I learned that you can reinsert the pin. There’s an upper and lower gear thingy in the sensors center and both have to be aligned perfectly for pin to go back in, you’ll know because it’ll sit straight up and down and plastic gears won’t move independently. I double and triple checked everything each time I did the install but any slight movement can set it off center so just be careful not to jostle anything until snap ring is reinserted. I reinstalled being very very careful. This forth time I decided to take car off the jacks before inserting key. So I put it down turned the key then started it and not a single movement from the wheel. I turned left and right to lock positions several times and it was smooth as could be! Backed out of garage and did a test drive around the back of barn area. Perfect power steering. So now I’m just going to be a bit cautious for the next few months just in case.
Most important take always: make sure those gears are perfectly aligned on sensor when you pull out of shipping box they could be jostled during shipping and handling. That pin should be straight up and down in the center of its opening. No leaning forward or sideways.
Double and triple check for alignment once installed. Before sliding tube back on.
Don’t jostle anything when installing snap ring.
Locking snap ring pliers are a blessing as it’ll hold snap ring when taking out making reinserting easier.
Put car on ground before turning on ignition.

Great video! Very informative! Thank you for taking the time and energy for making this video.
This just happened to my sons 2010 Ford Escape last night. I read on line that it might be the torque sensor control. That’s exactly what it was. Thank god I didn’t have to replace the whole steering rack. I read that some people had to replace the whole rack. So my mechanic is doing it. Like you said the part alone is $265 from Ford plus labor.
That’s where my mechanic deals with for certain parts. Well it beats paying $2000 !!
Just saying Thank you for a great video!!!

We put the sensor on a strong light source, I put it on the phone's flashlight and gently rotating the inner parts we look for the bottom hole. As found (it is lighter against the background of the lower plate), insert the paper clip and the sensor is ready for installation

You only need to take two bolts off (if you already have steering wheel off that is) to get the Steering column off and they are both 13 MM, you also have to unplug 2 connectors as well. great video, I had to do my sensor alignment 2 times same sensor, but you need to align the plates to get the pin back correctly..
1st time steering hard to turn right and car moving to the left...
2nd time steering spinning all the way to the end and stuck there..
got it right 3rd time, it is almost impossible not do bump it out of alignment when replacing the king-Kong snap ring, so i align it up not removing the pin, then replaced the steering with out the tube and king-kong snap ring, then made sure the pin is in the window when i removed the pin, then just started the car as shown in the video, took it for test drive and it was perfect...then remove the steering put the tube and king-kong snap ring back with-out removing battery terminal, and yes the unit did move around trying to get the snap ring back, but after replacing every thing it worked perfectly..

Ok first of all stop with the sarcastic comments. Second you should only change this sensor if you had this exact code in the title. If you replaced it otherwise without this code then it is on you and yes the column slides right on, it is literally a slip joint by definition. Lastly I will give you my best advice and that is to clear codes in the PSCM with a scan tool, turn the key off and then start up the vehicle. Do you now have power steering now?

Perfect...this is a ..AWESOME.. vid...i actually watched the vid to know how its done..BUT i simply did not have the space so i took it to a lincoln dealership by my house and they replaced the whole housing with sensor in it a 1500.00 part... i was so mad i literally if i had the space would have done it my self..the sensor was barely 230.00...but its done ..waranteed..those guys did do a great job on everything they fixed. I just coulda save 2700.00..my bill for that oil pan gasket and new key housing that they found a problem with on my 2008 for escape ...a little over 4200.00...
I was originally given a 3700+ total with tax..but they found a problem with the ignition so if went up to over 4200...
So i do have the mind and basic know how to do this kind of work i have take care of my own car issues in the past but the garage is stacked high with junk and tools and stuff from remodels home remodels...
You van save a ton if u do it your self?.. but ONLY if you have the mechanical gene and understand it...otherwise its well worth it to take it to the professionals..like i did..i still think it was way high? But hey it done...
I now have been traumatized to the point of i will bo buy two sensors and have them on hand and be ready to do it myself! 😂😂😂😂 i hate electric anything..i have a 91..94..f150..never ever had a steering issue...96 for explorer never...2008..recalls on power steering..even a few years after the original owner. My buddy..got the car..every now and then on a turn the wheel would stiffen up.some times scary almost hit a parked car twice...they said it wasn't a recall issue..and now all this time it goes out and i missed recall ugh..fml..

Great video My 2009 Mercury Mariner was having this same problem. The recall work they did was only the programming of the steering control box and the recall on mine was closed without any parts replaced. So I bought the steering torque sensor, followed the instructions very closely and the steering wheel doesn't jitter now. However my vehicle hasn't quite "learned" the trim values yet. I'm hoping it will... The hardest part of the job for me was getting that big snap ring off. Had a small pair of ring pliers that were too small, went to the hardware store and bought the only bigger size they had, still too small. So what I did was to use a good size pair of needle nose pliers and after grinding the tips a couple times I was able to get it off and eventually back on. It was a little nerve-wracking thinking you may screw up a $200 part and have to start over lol

Sometimes she has power steering and sometimes she doesn't and did notice a vibration in the steering wheel at times. I just want to make sure it's this part and not the power steering control module that's defective before I order this part. I work at a car dealership and a mechanic said he would do it on the side for $45.00 an hour labor which is a very fair price I thought. I could probably do it but with something this critical, I think I'll leave it to the pros for peace of mind.
