To be fair, offensive line was a lot better and more experienced last year, with being in the top 25 in sacks allowed, and tackles for a loss weren’t an issue.
As a Hardcore UofM fan and Hardcore Sparty hater I think it was a lot more than 1 RB.

Here's Mel's biggest problem: There's no team culture right now! Banking on the portal to fill holes every year is a short-term strategy and may work every once in awhile; but not every year. He needs to build his team through HS recruiting and develop a winning culture with that as his foundation. That was the foundation of Dantonio's success. That's really the only way you can be consistently successful at MSU.
The issue is they don’t have the players to play the scheme they want.

Tanner Morgan has looked pretty effective against four teams this year including two P5 teams. I wouldn't dismiss him. With the O line protecting him and defenses fearing rushes, he picked out ten different receivers against MSU. I'd give him some credit. By the way, the one interception he's charged with this year hit the receiver in the ribs.
People definitely forgot what Tanner did the last time he had Kirk C as his OC.
23-26 is still absolutely unacceptable
The next 4 games are really tough. If the offense can't move the ball the defense will tire out and if that doesn't change turn out the lights.
Everything changed - LET ME EMPHASIZE that EVERYTHING CHANGED when Mel accepted that extension. Big time coaches still have down years, but their “down years” are still 8 win seasons. It’s year 3, this is totally unacceptable. Like I said, you want to be paid like Ryan Day well you better put up like Ryan Day. You also be ready to face the axe in any season when you look this bad.

I listened to the rest of this on Audacy. The comment from the MSU player saying that they weren't prepared to play Minnesota could have been said after the Washington game. Bill Bellichik's approach is well known for putting maybe not so great players in a position to win. State is pretty bad but I don't think they're as bad as Tucker and his coaches have made them. They're not a run team and they're not whatever they're doing on defense at the hands of Hazelton. When a defender is consistently nowhere near the receiver that's bad coaching. When you run the dreaded up the middle play over and over again when your biggest strength is Thorne and his two receivers, that's terrible play calling. The best thing about MSU in the past was that they weren't afraid to go rogue and change on the fly. If Tucker doesn't do this starting Saturday, you have to question this coach. He has nothing to lose at this point but to put it in his QB's hands and let it rip.
How the hell are these dudes so surprised?? They were a one man team last year and they no longer have that man this year. That coach isn’t good and wasn’t good last year.
I mean, is it really that far fetched to think that the defense would be improved and that Thorne would take the next step? That’s the biggest disappointment for me. It’s that not one player on this team looks better this year than last. That’s an indictment on coaching and development.

Tanner Morgan has 18 incompletions this year. (In 4 games). He's at over 11 yards per attempt. That's McCarthy, Stroud, Hooker level stuff.

as a UM fan who was irate at don brown, his defenses were actually pretty damn good against all teams not named OSU (and an absolute brainfart against FSU in the orange bowl on 3rd and 17)

Mel Tucker bought into his own hype talking about winning championships when dude should have been telling people this is a rebuild it's going to take time but he didn't do that he sold fans on false hope. You can't build your team solely on the transfer portal.
to be fair, if tucker said that, it'd seem like a cop out. fans don't want to hear "we're gonna suck for 3 years before we get some decent talent, b/c the current guys suck"
i think they're learning that you can't build a portal for long term success. it's meant to be a temporary fix, not meant for laying foundations for success. finding guys like KW3 is rare, not normal in the portal
Last year's 3rd place in their own division "is not the norm" for MSU going forward? I still remember last fall when Valenti was trying to spew the narrative that MSU had overtaken Michigan permanently 🤣 and now they're not even expected to finish 3rd. Yikes!

Mike and Rico need to look at what the coach they irrationally hate (James Franklin) did at PSU and hope Tuck wises up. When Franklin first got to PSU the OC that he brought with him sucked. So Franklin let him go and brought in Joe Morehead. However, even if Tuck does something like that, he hasn't shown he can do what Franklin can which is recruit. PSU recruited McSorely, Barkley, Godwin, Sanders, Giesici, etc. Can Tuck do that and not just throw darts at the wall with the portal?

When you say this is the worst coached game Tucker has had, it sounds like you think this was some kind of an anomaly? He is not a great coach and never has been. Dan Antonio built his teams with sketchy recruits of questionable character that other teams didn't want to touch it caught up with him and he was ushered out Tucker trying to build his teams on Portal that's hit and miss 96 mil down the drain

Dismiss Tanner Morgan at your peril. You guys and blue chip programs like Nebraska just automatically assume you're built-in great, and no...you are not, you have to work for it. Minnesota got embarrassed last year against Bowling Green and many of their dudes on the current team learned a very important lesson, and are carrying that lesson forward this year.
