      They didn’t, between Ian and this storm 40-50 yards of sand dune has been eaten away. A lot of people’s seawalls were badly damaged from the previous hurricane and there was no time to get new ones installed. Thanks for your advice though Susan.

    For most of the past century, it seemed relatively safe and cheap to live on the edge of the ocean in FLA. Michael, Ian and now Nicole are proving that is probably no longer the case. I have a feeling that insurance alone is going to make living right on the coast extremely expensive, if not prohibitive.

    • @deborahwood9304

      🤣🤣🤣 I was raised in FL, it's NEVER been the case, shorelines have always changed and shifted in hurricanes, the difference is people are stupid now .... 70 years ago people knew better 🤣🤣🤣 now they think they can outsmart nature's grand design by building on shifting sands with all our tech and physics knowledge and nature keeps putting them in their place.

The entirety of houses exposed, room all exposed, one house even had half of it's entirety taken out to sea apparently. it's truly tragic.

    many years ago i lived in this area, there was a push to build concrete storm barriers at the ocean front to protect peoples property from extreme storms. And many property owners laughed and said they were an eye sore... well the houses that havent lost a good 1/2 of their property are the ones that went ahead and build a proper barrier.

    Its because they never fixed the seawall from hurricane Ian. I have lived in Florida for a long time and been through a few hurricanes now. The preparation and after action for Ian is by far the worst I have seen. We all still had the debris from Ian sitting in our front yards when this one hit. Not to mention all the damage that wasn't fixed due to insurance companies completely dropping the ball. And lets talk about why certain areas flooded that shouldn't have due to all the broken and outdated drainage systems. Sorry for the rant but as a resident its frustrating. A lot of things happened that didn't need to.

    • @yodieyuh
      @yodieyuh ปีที่แล้ว

      That's starting late.
      Those beaches were able to handle minor storms before humans forced the sediment flows to change.
      A lot of natural Daytona Beach sand is supposed to be erosion from the Appalachian mountains.
      Humans prevent that and other sediments from replenishing beaches, coasts, and river deltas.
      Take out man made inlets and jetties. Stop dredging.

    I can say this type of erosion has been a major inconvenience for me. While we only spend a little over 6 months a year in Florida for tax reasons, we are having to stay in NJ longer and longer into November to avoid the worst of hurricane season and humidity, last year much of our beach was gone. At this rate we may need to relocate to a property on the intercostal waters, even so, the dividends we collect from our energy portfolio are barely covering property insurance now. Joe Biden has really done a number on this country

    With all due respect to folks who are sad and whose hearts go out to the battered homeowners, think about the costs which EVERYONE is covering; that is: most everyone who is NOT enjoying their lives at the beach.
    The National Flood Insurance Program has had funding (premium) shortfalls. I.e.: not enough affected homeowners are paying into the pot! Instead, NFIP borrows from the government and already exceeded 30 billions; Congress cancelled 16 billion of debt so that the NFIP can borrow more. Who covers that? Everyone! Why? Because too many folks have tears in their eyes, fogging up their reasoning.
    When homeowners don't participate in insurance, disaster relief comes from FEMA. Who pays for their funding? See above.
    Stop building at the coast! Flood risks are only increasing. Stop with the unnecessary swanky housing at the shore, the swimming pools above an ocean of water. Just stop relying on all these teary-eyed people whose hearts, and ultimately taxes, inexplicably go out to cover this nonsensical cycle of construction/destruction!

    In Matthew 7, Jesus said everyone who hears his words and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. Then he went on to say everyone who hears his words and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand (Matthew 7:24-26)
