- Raw footage from this morning, 11/11/2022, we did an extensive drone survey of the damage along the coast of Daytona Beach as the winds have now calmed down to the point where we are able to fly in a safer environment.
Footage shows the major coastal damage to the homes along the shore of Daytona Beach, Florida.

I thought that also until I realized that these people had yards and yards of lawn out in front of them, along with the seawall, and then past that seawall was a huge, shore area, the ocean never came up anywhere near the seawall. I would’ve felt safe too. But oh my goodness look at the ocean now and it just ate away within hours…
All that you see that’s gone There was dirt underneath that pool and there was a lawn area out past that pool. Oh my goodness.
Building on the shores of an ocean ripe and ready for all kinds of catastrophic weather is absolutely observed to say the least. Having money doesn't mean your very smart.

Ask Ron DeSantis if he's ready to act on climate change that will affect the tourism industry which floats his sugar high. Taxes are kept artificially low because of tourism. If the tourists have no where to go, what becomes of state budgeting..

I really like those delicate metal rebars holding up large concrete pools and water it holds and decks. No cement pylons?????????? Now that took a genius to do that! The supposed sea walls are incredibly thin and under built. Since I have been in Daytona it is amazing how mediocre the building practices are.

Many of the lots were prepared well before Andrew. Some of the homes, although renovated, were built in the early 60s when construction standards weren't very strict. I can't help looking at these drone videos with 'Light is Calling' as a soundtrack backdrop. This is real decasia.
That's because Florida Republicans don't believe in regulations to protect people, only guns.
Nature has a way of getting rid of things that shouldn't have been there in the first place

Jerry my man, I flipping love that you said that. For me, native Floridian here, I would not ever want a home that close. It does not seem real smart but maybe that's the problem. Too many dumb people with lots of money doing dumb stuff?
It's not always about status, back then the risks were not truly ever understood, now its becoming very real. Regardless. People worked hard. They've lost that now. Hopefully insurance will cover

This happens every year in Santa Cruz. These people continue to build on the coast sand and on these cliffs. It's nuts what they are doing and then cry when the land is gone. Undeneath the roads, there's nothing. Many don't have a road or driveway now. Their primo land is worth nothing and they rent.
There is reference in the Bible at Matthew 24 about building on sand versus building on rock. Obviously, someone did not read their Bible before constructing these homes. Somehow, I cannot bring myself to feel sorry for those who defy nature and then cry when nature proves superior.
Those houses have withstood plenty of Cat 1 hurricanes. What they never experienced before is a hurricane during the King Tide caused by the Blood Moon. A freak timing event

This proves that dredging sand from the sea to replace what was taken before will only result in the sea reclaiming again and again what was hers in the first place.

@@jonnydanger7181 I know Cocoa Beach where my cousins live, so I assume more coastline than that. There was a big hurricane (can’t remember year, but prior to 2006). I was there in 2010, I asked them what happened? Last I heard, all the beach was gone (Daytona too)! They said they dredged the sand from the ocean to replenish/replace the beaches. That’s not the first time they’ve done this. I pray they will learn their lesson: you don’t steal from Mother Nature, or the Sea!

@@ThePeasantsCottage The army Corp of engineers routinely dredge the sand to replace the beaches. The houses are built on the other side of the sand dunes, which are no gone. They do not dredge sand to build houses on.
For much of the past century, building so close the shoreline was no big issue. Some of these homes existed six decades with no problems. Unfortunately, in the past 2 months alone - Fiona, Ian and now Nicole have demonstrated that times have changed and seaside homes are not what they used to be.
Build a wall, lose the beach.
@@Hartlor_Tayley You just watched a 23 minute long video that clearly demonstrated & graphically showed that even a bulkhead and/or a concrete wall and/or a pilings barrier/wall does not always protect the house and/or backyard from profound erosion or destruction. The video showed several properties with significantly eroded, in some cases destroyed, properties even though the owners had installed such barriers.
@@popeyetsm2750 I grew up on New Jersey shore. I think teen for this type of erosion is literally called “New Jerseyization”. No grass or dunes to catch the sand blowing off the beach and when the waves eventually hit the wall it digs out the sand. New Jersey had to build dunes and plant grass and bring in miles of sand. But still a battle, just having buildings erodes the beach. Sad situation.

@@jonnydanger7181 basically the onshore wind blows the sand back into dunes and grasses which trap and accumulate the sand. This here seems to be a barrier island beach which is very changeable naturally without buildings etc.
All those property owners should be heavily fined for sea pollution....
And even though some of the houses look ok, the ground below them is fragile. These houses will be removed.

There are simply no words to describe this scene. It's too incomprehensible to absorb, especially the destruction against the backdrop of a calm blue sky and the waves gently and tauntingly moving along the newly formed shoreline as if neither had anything to do with it.

Everyone pays for this, insurance is just spreading the cost to the many to cover the losses of the few.
IMO State/FL should not let them rebuild, even if they can afford to. Trying to hold back the Atlantic ocean is a waste of money.
There is more water in the oceans and that lends to more heated water that storms love. It's only getting hotter but go ahead Florida dimwits. Keep building on the ocean front.
Property values and taxes. That’s what the state is concerned about. You are correct if the state cared about the future of the beaches and the coast. The fish will like the living in the condos at the bottom of the ocean.
I hope these people had better insurance coverage than those on the Gulf side of FL
They are certified as the construction engineers, but they didn't know and understand some natures.
You can only get erosion by sea insurance coverage if you live in Boulder Colorado. These people would have good coverage against wildfires. Thats how insurance works.
Insurance was already too expensive there but this will kill the influx of new residents. Florida is not inexpensive!

Tax money. Property development is major government income. There is zero short term incentive to preserve undeveloped areas.
I own a second home in Bonita Springs. That's where Ian came in. I'm enough inland and high enough I had no damage but a few palm trees bent over. The Insurance companies will get to the point where only the mega rich can afford to live on the coast. These homes are in the millions. These people aren't the ones to feel sorry for. It's those in the tin can trailer homes packed together like sardines that got wiped out I feel sorry for. There's talk that Florida home owners like me will see their insurance rates triple!!!

I grew up in Central Fla. It almost never got really bad storms. I knew lots of people who had homes on the beach at Daytona and Smyrna. It was never considered a problem or that risky. This looks devastating. It was never about "status" - you had to live there to understand about living on the beach. It was a way of life.
My issue has always been allowing those damn high rises on the beach. They ruined the whole nature of the beach.
Those homes are ridiculously close to the water! No one is truly surprised at the damage.
For most of them, the water was not so close when they were built.
The word that comes to mind is atrocious speechless bewilderment
The braced seawalls seemed to do better than the others, but there was still damage when the others were swept away. Also, having them in smaller squared segments seemed to help, too, rather than having large swaths of straight paneled seawall. The sand beneath the structures seemed to be sucked out by waters caught behind the seawalls that collapsed in the areas that didn't have squared segments. Structures closer to the beach failed completely, but those closer to the road had lesser damage. Why have an expensive pool when you are on the beach? Geez, these people would've done better putting that money toward protecting their structure rather than blowing it on a pool.

This is at Toronita, right? We've visited near there a few times, staying at a house right in the middle between the Halifax and the Atlantic. (That house is undamaged.) This looks like a loss of about 100' of beach. Most unfortunate.

Don't feel bad. Some of these homes are 2nd and 3rd homes for some. The lesson here is they got off easy as this was barely a Cat 1 Hurricane. It happened during a full moon phase and high tides. Imagine for a moment if this was a Cat 4 or even a Cat 5 Hurricane during a full moon and a high tide? Condos would have slid into the Atlantic. Stop building on top of the water!!! Florida has some of the worst building codes and weakest inspection criteria in the U.S. Someone is going to have the courage to declare eminent domain of this beach front land. The public is going to have to move back from the area.
For some it is a major loss for others it’s insurance and tax deduction. The state needs to deal with the consequences of losing that barrier beach and all that land behind it. The worst is yet to come.

Driving cars on this beach 4 many years only weakened the sand unfortunately. It was a very beautiful beach area 4 many years.
Cannot feel sorry for a very wealthy person who decided to build a house right on the beach. Please note, alot of these same shorelines and properties were wiped out in 2006 (correct year??) Hurricane Charley. Still a few vacant shore lots in north daytona and ormond beach

Florida doesn't really have higher ground. It is pretty much all flat. Those homes have had it. They are structurally unsafe now that the ground beneath them has been eroded away.
Won't be driving down daytona again. A1A will be the ocean soon, it's all sand fill, and this was barely a hurricane!
If Florida is experiencing severe erosion on both its east and west coasts, the total amount of land in the state must be shrinking - and if there is less land to be taxed, then everyone's property's taxes should . . .
The land is shrinking because they keep building new condos on both side.

They actually add sand to build the place up higher so whats eroding is the sand that they piled up and thats blocking the waters natural movement it's like a dam made of sand.

This is why I'd never live on a beach let alone the beachfront
I lived on a beach for two years. It was a rented house built on twelve-foot concrete pylons anchored deep into rock. The first floor was 100 percent concrete, included nothing that could be water damaged and was used as a garage. We had a major nor'easter and the house was in eight feet of water, but sustained no damage. I moved my cars out two days before. 150 other homes around me were washed away. There is a way to do it right.
I wouldn't live by a lake or river either. Water rises and tears out the structure from beneath you.

All this was inevitable. That shoreline development like this was ever allowed in the first place is a testament to human hubris. Bet they rebuild like before and it will happen again.

This had nothing to do with global warming or climate change. It was a typical cat 1 hurricane that happened to coincide with a King Tide that goes along with the blood moon
It's just bad timing and nothing more. I don't think Daytona even had hurricane force winds. I think it was downgraded to a tropical storm. Nicole came ashore about 115 miles South of Daytona and rapidly lost its hurricane strength.

This was a result of the King Tide. We had a blood moon the night before it hit. Those areas have withstood dozens of Cat 1 hurricanes in the past. Just never one occurring during King Tide

Nile Blue type hurricanes cause damages, and forced migration away from the coastal areas. Possible cheap buyouts, and it is entered into the International Conservation Bank accounts; land for collateral. U.N. Rockefeller 1982.
