- Apollo, our no-longer-so-little orphaned black rhino, has spread his proverbial wings and taken an important step in his journey back to the wild.
On 13th September 2023, Apollo graduated to Rhino Base. A big step towards his eventual return to a fully wild life. Read the full story at:
Established in 1977, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) operates the world’s most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program, rescuing and hand-rearing orphaned elephants and other animals that have lost their mothers, all too often as a result of human activity. But we do much more than this. Through our Aerial, Anti-Poaching and Mobile Veterinary Units, we safeguard the natural environment and provide immediate assistance to wild animals in need. We also secure irreplaceable wilderness areas so that animals will always have space to roam and work with local partners and communities to ensure people and wildlife can live alongside one another.

Such a mixture of emotions watching my Beloved foster boy (whom I've always called ' Pol 😊). That little Rhino who used to pull his sleeping mat over himself at night - it's believed it reminded him of being underneath his mother before she was slaughtered 😡😢 - has embarked on the next stage of his return to the wild. THANK YOU SO MUCH to the Wonderful keepers for everything you have done for 'Pol and for your continuing care. I am so very proud of him. He will remain my Darling foster boy and I'm so pleased he has a tracking device fitted. I Love you Dearly 'Pol and look forward to updates about you. Stay safe Precious Boy. I pray for the day when the utterly pointless and unnecessary poaching of these amazing creatures will end - and indeed the killing of all wildlife, everywhere. 🙏💙🦏💙🕊

I visited Sheldrick 5 years ago and have been sponsoring an orphaned elephant every year since then. They do outstanding work to help preserve what is left of the elephant population in Kenya. At $50 a year it's so worth it to follow along their journey.
It is such good news to see Apollo looking so fit, strong and healthy. Hopefully he will soon he will be back living in the wild, going back home to Tsavo where he was born. Every rhino is precious, so huge thanks to everyone who adopted Apollo and to the SWT keepers who did such a amazing job raising him.

Oh he looks pretty happy in his new home. I bet all his Kaluku friends will be missing him a lot. I hope and pray he eventually finds his way with the other wild rhinos and he has a friend or two. I knew rhinos tend to be loners but he’s been accustomed to having all kinds of friends at Kaluku.
