While Im always excited for a review about something Ive never heard of from my favorite lil emo guy, Im equally hyped for the now ritual double darkened streams after each review. I meed you to maintain that series until we get to the nasty gritty parts, its going to be unbelievably choice
This game kinda feels like it could have had a strong f.e.a.r. vibe had they gone the horror route (sans the enemy AI improvements Fear had.) Something about this weird transitionary period of FPS shooters, that got overshadowed by games like halo 2, feels like a set of lessons modern devs aren't allowed? Or care enough to be reminded of.
Hello Grim Beard! I've been watching your vids for some time now, picking mostly familiar titles from the vast library. But the longer I stick around, the more rewarding it is to explore completely strange (to me) or obscure things as well. I couldn't wish for a more captivating guide than your narrative style and sincere effort that goes into these reviews. It's... many things. The editing and pacing fit just perfectly, they're not over the top or out of place. Respect for the media and its creators, which is such a rare sight. Careful observation, understanding of the context. Genuine dedication to what you're doing. And I can't get over how right the overall vibe is! It’s all about the combination of music, design, visuals, references, and the subjects of choice. I fail to imagine anything else in this KMFDM's sticker place, because _of course_ it's there. Everything just feels like home. And I believe your following, too, feels at home on your channel. Please keep up the impressive work and do what's true to you! It's impossible to fake these things and it shows.
Also, I'm curious if you're familiar with Primal? It's a PS2 horror adventure game released in 2003. I have a weak spot for it as it was my childhood top favorite. Probably not the best thing to shape dumb kid's taste in music and character design but... yeah, the damage is irreversible. Jen's still one of my favorite female protagonists, and I revisit 16 Volt music pretty often. But this game has such a weak presence on the internet that it feels like a long forgotten fever dream at times.

Hey Grim, a Darkened Streams series of The X-Files would be something I'd be down for. I don't care if other people have covered it. If it ain't Grim, it ain't nothin'.
Lovecraft did *not* strike gold in his time. He lived a life of poverty (in part due to pride, in part due to anxiety) and died without knowing how his work ended up influencing pop culture. Calling him a mediocre writer is a valid criticism, but obviously, like, your opinion, man. His real accomplishment was his prodigious correspondence. He wrote stupid amounts of letters, and as a result had a tremendous influence on so many people. They are the ones who promoted his work and his memory after he was gone. It is ironic that one who had so many prejudicial beliefs was also so good at making friends. He's pitiable because he never understood that contradiction within himself.
I seriously believed for nine tenths of a second that you were going to tell me that the sequel to Area 51 is called Area 52. I had convinced myself of this reality and was immediately let down when it wasn't true.
The original company went defunct and personally gave the rights to the US Army. The Army didn't "take it" lol. Atari got tired of publishing for Midway and was in the middle of switching over to a Name-Branded product, instead of video games. Midway was majorly in debt and Atari would not assist them, so after they finished it and were going backrupt, Atari wanted to sell the rights to all of their games for Atari themselves and not Midway. That didn't fly and there was a huge fight over it. Midway entirely told the US Army, "Hey, if you want this, you can have it!". It was kind of a joke if I recall the lead dev saying somewhere a few years ago in the interview and was surprised when they hosted it on their website. It wasn't just the Army either, they gave it out to everyone. You can find the game from many websites, some that are still up. Be that as it is lol, the Army now has their own dedicated pro gamer league on Twitch, so maybe Midway started something lmao? This was right before the America's Army series after all. They also did this with the Suffering and a few other games. There was no cash involved in this and no real conspiracy theories, or sponsorships. Just one company mad at another.
I’m finally tuning into this half a year later, realizing I had started watching it until a few minutes in and got derailed watching long plays of the arcade game.
In that segment where you mention the game store in Stay Alive prominently displaying Dreamcasts five years after it was discontinued and wondering if they should've been in a bargain bin instead, I would like to point out my own experience with the Dreamcast where I got the console, a vmu, extra controller, and about five games all out of a bargain bin about a year BEFORE it was discontinued. So yeah, that depiction is definitely less than realistic.
That's pretty funny. I don't think anyone can beat the Virtual Boy, though. It had a grand total of 22 games. AVGN had an episode about it. What a disaster!
Man Midway was killing it, I was sad when they went under, Area 51, The Suffering and it's sequel and Psi-ops all great game that just... nailed fun. They were great to play, they were great for combat, the lore, the secrets everything just felt really good about them. Then.. they sold it all, the Psi-ops lawsuit didn't help..... I just miss what we lost. Also Blacksite was trash, I wanted more cheese with David and Manson.
The grubby computer tower with the KMFDM sticker and Sailor Mercury…every time I see it, I feel like I’m peeking through a window back twenty years. I feel seen, and I appreciate it
Goshdarn, I appreciate the work you put into reading all your patrons names, and making sure you pronounce them right, but the one written in Hangul had me holding my breath.
Very good review. Sincerest thanks. Editing and quality overall is awesome on your stuff. Back to game. I like quite a bit FPS's and it was pretty much my favorite genre. Area 51 is interesting. It wasn't that special, but I wouldn't consider it bad, but there's something. Cause it's one of the quite few FPS titles I've been planning to play again for years and years. Not that good that I have done it, but when thinking about FPS to replay, there really aren't that many titles I'd play, but FEAR, Area 51, Prey (original) and few others come to mind. I was really exited to find out that DD is the voice of main character, but it was really disappointed. He indeed sounded like he was about to sleep. Maybe 7 or 8 out of 10. But it has few of those about almost 10 moments.
Man, I love finding new obscure game reviewers (the games being the obscure thing, not you). Love listening to people passionately speak about weird/old games

(I am C Jones - this review written by PLUG, my grandson - "This game is really a good one. The players are awesome. I am at the GRAYS level and it is an exciting game. I am also interested in other games like this, and books. I love books on the TITANIC and Roswell, for I had an Uncle Phil who was associated with the space program and knew Werner von Braun. He never claimed to have seen a UFO but my grand mother said no doubt he rode on them. for he was the GREAT THOR CHIEF. I am visiting Roswell with my Godmother soon. Thanks for a great game. My Name Is: PLUG" I am his Grandmother and I approve this message. (after little editing)
I couldn't possibly express how much this made my night, I love ya dude, keep it up
Damn I’m glad I found your channel. This was one of my favorite games as a kid and it’s nice to see someone acknowledge it
Hey Grim, a Darkened Streams series of The X-Files would be something I'd be down for.
I had convinced myself of this reality and was immediately let down when it wasn't true.
oh hell yeah brother new grimbeard
i remember my friend having this game but i dont remember playing it... definitely gotta check it out now
You know the weirdest thing that happened to this game? The Air Force took it, and possibly to this day, released for free.
Bad vibes, man...
@@kupokinzyt someone is remaking this game from the ground up.
@@jackgrove4621 I know him, though he hasn't given any updates on the remake in a while.
I loved this game. It reminded me of the perfect weekend rental game, back when that was a thing.
Grimbeard covering Area 51? I'm so excited, this was one of my favorite games when I was younger.
I’m finally tuning into this half a year later, realizing I had started watching it until a few minutes in and got derailed watching long plays of the arcade game.
New Grim Beard just dropped : Me : Put on my goth Gamer gear - Lets do this.
I swear you're the only one who does sketches I dont find extremely cringy to watch. Keep up the great work!
I feel seen, and I appreciate it
This game was hands down my favourite FPS when I was a kid. Shame about the sequels.
Love the work put into these. This is amazing stuff. And yes I do often rewatch these while going to sleep
I remember playing this on repeat when I was 13/14, too. It only helped me shift from regular military scifi to military scifi horror
Goshdarn, I appreciate the work you put into reading all your patrons names, and making sure you pronounce them right, but the one written in Hangul had me holding my breath.
Great, so THIS is why I still don't have my energy drink, AMAZING.
Man, your takes on video games are freaking great.
Excellent review! Especially of a game that I still see in my dreams and nightmares years later. You have earned my subscription!
Finally finished, this was great stuff Grim! I appreciate you a whole lot bud
Man, I love finding new obscure game reviewers (the games being the obscure thing, not you). Love listening to people passionately speak about weird/old games
Okay
the missile hitting your energy drinks got a genuine laugh.
My most vivid memory of this game is that it came with some kind of DRM that fucked up my computer.
Speaking of a piece of media that focuses on almost every conspiracy theory being true, the TV show Inside Job is really funny and has a lot of artists that worked on gravity falls
Oh wow, I remember having an irrational hatred of this game as a kid.
Huge like for having Front242 - Headhunter in the background at 17:14 )
One you lock the target
Two you bait the line
Of course I want to watch Grim talk about the concept, the location of Area 51, I sure hope he doesn't talk about a fun video game
Grim uploads, and the day gets better immediately 🤟
If you could do a series like Darkened Streams, but for X-Files, it would be amazing.
Seconded!
Bro, your videos are so good. I hate that I only recently discovered you, but also stoked I get to go through your massive backlog of videos.
Also, I do go to sleep to your videos at times. I often put on one when I lay down and wake up to another of yours playing thanks to auto-play. Then I have to rewatch the first video, but more playtime for you (I think that's how it works, who fuckin knows).
You sir... I enjoy your videos immensely. Whenever your video on civie11 video drops, I drop everything to watch!
Btw - Love your music. Can't get enough of the reviews background music but I couldn't find all tracks on your soundcloud. Sailor Mercury background is incredibly addicting! Do You have it somewhere ?
Why was I not notified yesterday when this video came out? And who the hell does t want to see an 80 minute breakdown of Area 51!!!!??? I didn’t even know that I wanted this!
Gotta say, I always love the content you put out, and the intro.... *chefs kiss*
God I love your videos so much
We all know size matters in a third person shooter. Because you want to be small. So your character doesn't block too much screen and fits behind the waist-high cover more easily. Obvious really.
This game is so memorable that I forgot I even watched this upload, and remember next to none of this.
That or I'm going full Mike Stoklasa and need to check into a retirement home...
Recently, out of nowhere, I've felt very urge to play this game, nearly after 15 years since its release. Goddamn boi, Illuminatis are real.
I've watched 7 of your videos in the last few days and I had a moment today when I was getting of a bus where I heard your voice as my internal monologue. And I said "Grim? Grim, is that you? Grim, I can hear you. Your telepathy is improving!" and then thought how this was the most amusing thing that happened in my entire day and how when I get back to the couch I'll leave this comment on one of your videos while I watch it and drink my 9th cup of coffee. I'm not even enjoying the coffee anymore. Why do I keep making more?
A game I've actually played before! I'm double excited
