  • This is a film called "Now Its Skydiving" filmed by Lew Sanborn (D-1). It was produced by Lane-Cole-Dietz according to the credits. I wonder if the Cole is Bill "Chuteless" Cole. I found this film on eBay in 16mm and had it digitized.
    Enjoy!

    Boy, does this bring back memories! I made my first jump at Orange in1962 and Lew Sanborn was my instructor/jumpmaster.

    I started parachuting a bit later (1972) in Australia. Many of the basics seen in the film here were still around then. Jumped with the famous Jerry Bird from 'Wings of Orange' team in Western Australia in 1976/77.

    Pretty wild to see this. Just earned my A-licence at this very dropzone in 2021. The center field looks nearly the same today.

    Its nice to see film of the way it was back in those days. I think we had it better than they do today, and it was more opf a challenge because not many people could actually fly back then.

      Yea but it was a hell of a lot more dangerous back then. One of the guys at my drop zone started jumping way back in the mid 60s, guy has seen some shit.

    Ouch! "People who care about sports, care about whiskey!" I think they would need it after landings like those... :)

    That's proper parachuting that is! Jump boots, roundies with a TU mod and a PLF at the end! I love it!

    Memories. i was jumping a lot in 1962-63 with the Fort Gordon Sport Parachute Club (C-1415), was in on the first baton pass and first 3 way we pulled off. Was Training and safety officer for a year. Static line, drcps, series = thanks for posting this. After a 46 year break, went back and got 6 jumps in the new era last year - to far to travel and too expensive for me these days, but damn, free fall is still great, and so are the people that do it. Got a little tunnel time too. At 78, I'm getting a little long in the tooth for today's jumping, wished I lived a bit closer to a good training dz -I'm 250 miles out of Byron. Still would like to get back to it, but probably won't.

    I was the first person to ever fly with a camera in Canada. It was my 19th jump for stills, and my 22nd jump for 16mm film. My gosh, those weere great days.

    It looks like the guy who is holding the altimeter up to the camera may be Daryl Henry, former Canadian mens champion for quite a few years..

    Thanks for clearing that up. It was my assumption that you were the Cole mentioned. My bad. BTW, I was going to digitize my 16mm copy of your chuteless jump but sadly my footage was lost in my latest basement flood. Is there a digitized copy of your jump somewhere?

    LOL... a Double L (or similar) mod to a round canopy makes it a "sports car"? I suppose for the time it was! (I owned and jumped a UT-15 for fun well into the "Ram air" era so I'm not unappreciative of earlier designs! )

    I found this video because my grandpa asked if anyone around the DZ heard of Lew Sanborn. He says Lew basically put together the team that he (David DeCima) was on.

    Wow. Any idea of the year of production? My father's first jump was in 1965 at Orange as was his 744th. That red Norseman was called "Red lead" (N69795). I have some nice shots of it on the ground with another white Norseman both owned by Parachutes Incorporated. he had a red and white canopy (not the one with the triangles pictured, but like the other). I wonder if it's him. Do you know who all appears in the film?

    • @JohnMusgrave
      @JohnMusgrave  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No idea who is in the film. I didn't started skydiving until 1975. Not sure of the date of the film. Thanks for the info about the Norsemans.

    I was at a DZ years ago (Horak Field, Elberta AL) and we would jump into the Florabama bar. We did a quick 4 way, landed on the beach, and went in to enjoy ‘skydiver pitchers’ of beer! I gave my logbook to the older guy. Guess who? Lew Sanborn A1 D1!! I said I wish you told me who who were before the jump, Lew said ‘you never asked!’

      I have jumped from Elberta, AL a few times and yes it was great getting a free picture of beer from the Florabama bar. Great place to land with the white sugar sand!!!!

      @steve7015 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That beats me, I had about 18 static line and at least 10 freefalls before I could fall stable...same thing every time, reach, flip over, T-10 deployed through the legs....1976 Toronto... Loved every minute of it....went on to make about 1200 jumps.
