- John plays The Software Toolworks' Star Wars Chess as part of our Star Wars: The Power of the 90's series. This game was released for the pc in 1993 and features some super fun animated battle sequences, really cool Star Wars character designs and art, and a lot of charm!

Neat, but shouldn't the pawns be rebel soldiers from the Tantive lV, instead of R2D2?

@@JuicyPLUSHYguy Yoda isn't in New Hope. Agree with both though, R2 had to be in somehow but making R2 a pawn seems kind of criminal.

the animations are fantastic!
Wish we could still play this. It looks really fun and could use a port over to modern devices.
Especially since I've seen quite a few of the old games being available on Steam

Animations are quite smooth, though the piece move rather slowly (I suppose to show off the animations).
Surprisingly decent chess game, too. White lost a couple tempi in the endgame that I could see, but I don't think there are any huge blunders.

So TH-cam on mobile has implemented this thing of showing different comments as I'm watching if I'm in vertical mode. This comment literally popped up as Yoda moves for the Castle move. 😂

White played f2-f3 threatening to capture Black's queen, but that's when Black retreated to e6.

I loved this version of a chess game back in the day! I had forgotten about.
Remember seeing this on the demo pcs when i was a kid. I was so impressed by the graphics just to realize it was chess.

This is fantastic! Didn't know this game existed.
For a moment I thought there were going to be no combat/death animations. Very cool! Although you have to be patient XD
And too bad that they put two C3-P0 and nothing from Han Solo. They would have done something like a color distinction, brown for Chewaka and Han putting those two in as the pair of bishops... blue for the pawns with R2-D2... and putting in Kenobi and Yoda but as Force ghosts and then both would have that in common. Or in any case not to worry about distinguishing the pieces and that each person memorized the distribution of the characters and that's it. If one of them was forgotten in the middle of the game, the programmers could have implemented that the places where the piece could be placed would light up and then you would always know which piece is which.
And, even though Leia is the only important woman in the original trilogy, perhaps it would be a better fit for Leia to be the King and Luke to be the Queen. And if we look at it from the point of view of adapting the movies... when Vader found himself alone with Leia when he kidnapped her, he was giving a Check but then they put Kenobi in the middle but he was captured by Vader, then they put Luke in the middle and there they did not dare to make an exchange of Queens.

but I will say that the people who made this did amazing on the animation
I wondered why they didn't use Han, but now I see he's still frozen in carbonite in the top, right corner.

The pieces could have been better:
Knight = TIE Fighter/X-wing because they "fly" over the other pieces.
Rebel Pawn = rebel trooper
Bishop = Imperial office/rebel officer
Rebel Rock = certainly not "frog people" - Yoda was the only one of that species who is the other one? Maybe a rebel tank from the EU or wookies (because they are stronger than humans).
Leia and Luke should trade places because Leia is the leader. It will also make more sense to have Luke and Vader be each other's equivalent.

That would have been expensive and time-consuming. Plus these games can only hold so much data.
