Can You Make a Leather Wallet WITHOUT Tools?!
We got challenged to make a leather wallet without tools, so we did just that! It can be easy to get caught up in buying fancy leather crafting tools, and nice leather tools are fun to use :) however often times they are not necessary, and you can use things around the house to make a beautiful DIY leather wallet.

My art teacher once told me: A good artist makes good pieces with the best equipment. A master artist makes good pieces using _any_ equipment.
I guess the master artist becomes the art itself.
My climbing instructor said:
When starting out you won't appreciate Fancy gear.
When you properly and fully appreciate it, you shouldn't need it anymore.
Later he added:
It's that middle ground, where you kinda see the difference it can make when you should start testing it to see what works for you. That's why we start you off with the shittiest gear we have, so you appreciate the topline gear we make available to you in the last quarter. So you know what to invest in.

I'm just starting out and I was telling my husband how I need those stitch hole maker tools. I come across this video and he uses a fork. Genius.

That's funny because in french we say "you can spot a good worker just with their tools" and that's kinda the opposite.
To be fair it's an old sentence that means that good workers care for their tools.

Nyli the Frenchy Wow that’s really interesting, I just use that phrase as an artist in traditional and digital media (drawing and stuff) that your markers or pens or how much your technology costs isn’t what makes you a great artist, it’s your skill. How much effort and time you put into it is how much you’re going to get out of it.
@@Nyli. Its not as contradictory as you may think. The difference lies in being a worker and being a skilled person.
A person's skill is not limited by his tools but in order to display those skills consistently, he requires his tool in good condition. A racecar driver can easily show his skill on an ordinary car but not if the car he drives have flat tires and broken brake, regardless if its a Ferrari or Toyota.

Tools without knowledge or skill, well they look in great condition as if they are being respected by the owner...
Not always the case, sometimes their new and purchased to boost ones ego or social standing.

When I started working with leather I only had: string, needles, scissors, a ruler and an awl. Imagine using the ruler and the awl to punch holes with 5 mm distance between them. It took ages but it helped me appriciate this art.
That's what I started with! I used an awl to punch holes individually for almost 3 years before I learned about stitching chisels - lots and lots of work, but you learn priceless skill!

it was the same for me, some tools i do, like punch i use a meet fork with cuted handle ... now i need how to do a skiver
I love these types of videos that show expensive tools are NOT a necessity to create something marvelous. Videos like this show that you can start off with household items and still do well. Thank you for doing what you do, and I look forward to seeing more of your videos.

Try making one with suede won’t look very nice but suede is very easy to work with and very cheap but it’s not a wallet you will use most likely

I was actually wondering about whether or not you could make a wallet without having professional tools! this was very helpful. indeed the one who owns skills will show it no matter how little materials there are available to them.

Same here, because I actually do just that, I have an old fork I use as pricking iron. It's similar to the one in the video, I simply hammered it flat, trimmed the prongs to about a centimetre long (that way they're less prone to bending), twisted them to a 45° angle (this gives the stitches a nice subtle zig zag look) and sharpened the tips a bit with a file. I haven't tried it on thick/heavy leather, but on thin and medium stuff it works great.

Just looks like a running stitch to me. Unless you want specifically just a video of him stitching leather, there are tons of tutorials on the running stitch.

I've watched about 5 of your videos, and this is by far my favorite!! I've just started learning how to work with leather, and I'm living out of the US and don't have access to tools. I love the fork! I did the nail punch on my first wallet. And I never thought of not using glue! I've been using some white craft glue that I had access to that works ok. I live near Pastores Guatemala, which has a great supply of leather! But I've learned it's mostly chrome tanned. I'm having fun learning something new - thanks for the video!

I actually thought he/she was going to use the fork as the hole punch and use a women's thick heeled shoe as the mallet...
I stumbled onto this channel and felt inspired to make my own wallet since mine is worn out. I watched a few videos and told myself I can do this. I then checked the prices of teather working wools and..... but after seeing this video I am committing myself to going and buying some scrap leather this weekend and giving it a try

I keep my pocketknife handy for when I find an abandoned couch in a field or alley.
I cut out the piece of material (hopefully leather, but free Naugahyde is handy to have on hand)
The piece that sits up against the wall is free from wear and pet scuffs, etc.

I'm looking for info on repairing rotten stitching on a convertible car top & your video came up. Initially I wasn't paying attention but when I looked up, I couldn't stop watching! Even though I genuinely appreciate your fine craftsmanship skills, I have no interest in making a leather wallet. What captured my full attention was the absolutely fabulous quality of photography! This was no slap dash, lets just zip out a quick video... not a chance. Soon as I saw the screen, I knew a professional cinematographer was filming, recording & editing this footage! Crisp clear shots in difficult set up angles, engaging lighting with perfect contrast, pure color saturation all focused on the subject, no cheezy music but real action sounds recorded, edit transitions are smooth & emotionally charged to portray a captivating experience. Sum it all up, you've got a perfect mini documentary genre style film. Both craftsmanship & photography, very impressive work by all. I truly enjoyed it! Thank you for sharing!
