  • In this video chair making with hand tools, i make a welsh stick chair , with some windsor chair feel to it, out of scraps and things I have lying around. this is not a tutorial, this is me managing with the tools, material and knowledge I have to hand. And yes, I am aware I used a cordless drill, I don't own a drill extension for the brace and bit, which is why I used the cordless drill.

    Good stuff mate .really nice chair. I have recently started making this style of chair. I really enjoy the process of carving the legs and spindles using draw knife and spoke shave. It's a muscle work out and a peaceful place. No tools ,no dust just the joy of personal achievement and expression of your art.

    Excellent work. Best use of a low bench ever! I shared this to a group I’m in. This deserves way more views. I wish you had narrated some of the steps. Going back to watch it again. Thanks.

    Watching you cut that curved armbow with that pull saw was something else! I would never thought you could get such a nice curve that way. Thanks for sharing your process!

    Nice work David. Were you using a travisher to saddle the seat? I saw you tearing some nice big chunks out there, but couldn't see what was in your hand.
    I need to glue up some seat blanks to get started on one of my own. The seat blank you have here looks huge! I thought Lost Art Press called for ~ 16x17", but I may be thinking of the side-chair instead.

    Very nice chair. Well done! Actually you are the reason I am into woodworking. I wanted to make a DIY wooden paralletes and the second video was yours. It was a shock as a whole new world opened in front of me. A silent world of hand tools. Thank you.

      @@DW_woodworks Thanks for getting back to me on that. One other thing I've wondered; do you think a three legged Roman bench, you know, the milking stool principle, would work or would the length of it make it unstable. I envisage myself sitting at the two-leg end, chopping mortices
      over the one-leg end, the whole thing being no longer than about five feet. I like working outside when I can so the fact that it wouldn't rock about on uneven ground would be good. All the best.

    • @DW_woodworks
      @DW_woodworks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have one, and it does work to a degree. The issues I encountered or limitations were, the width is better suited around 12", rather than my preferred 16". The bench should be around 4.5'. kneeling on one side (width ways) near the single leg can tip the bench.
      With all that being said, and taking the above into consideration, I have built furniture on the bench. I quickly learned that certain tasks had to be carried out differently, due to only 3 legs but, as I said, it's very possible to build furniture on the bench.

    • @tombristowe846
      @tombristowe846 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DW_woodworks Thanks for your reply. I want quite a short bench, so I'll try with three legs. At the end of the day it's not a big deal to saw off the single leg and install two instead if it doesn't work out well. All the best.

    Great stuff, as ever. Any thoughts on making yourself a pole lathe? Watching you make the legs, I had a thought that a knock-down pole lathe might suit your style. All the best, Terry

    I like that reamer for the brace drill. It looks a bit different from the vintage models I see on ebay. Have any specs on it and/or where I can find one?

    • @DW_woodworks
      @DW_woodworks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a Veritas reamer. I think there pretty easy to get a hold of. A quick Google search should sort you out.
