love this game. honestly; I still play it with keyboard only and I find it much easier that way. can only encourage new players to explore and soak in the atmosphere, its amazing. also I find the german voice acting much better than the english voices, so maybe give it a try, if you wanna experience it differently for once. I love how the people in the colony try to convince you that this world is a hell hole where wolfs eat each other and you cannot trust anybody; thats what they say and the world itself is dangerous af. buuuut the men in the old camp give you free food, a shack to live in, quests and opportunites to contribute ... the higher ups attempt to extort you, yes, they've built a system of oppression and extortion, but the working class people are mostly very inclusive and friendly towards you. in fact all over the colony you find nice guys and many of them do especially one thing: they warn you of the danger. there even is a guard, named Paco, who sits on his ass all day, outside the camp to specifically warn you not to enter the ork land. even most of the animals do not attack you on sight, but attempt to scare you away, content to mind their own business if you back off whereas in most games enemies will simply attack you once you enter their aggro range. gothics world is bleak and dark and dangerous, but its inhabitants arent, but the systems, which a few of them built to benefit themselves are. it's almost like the US, only in the US the "diggers" don't control the housing market and you will not be given food and a shack for free there, so the colony on some level is actually a friendlier place than the US. and the CEO's of whatever big company, as well as their shareholders and the private owners, like however that a-holes who owns amazon name is, do nothing or next to no % of the work that actually makes the profit and yet they gain almost all of it for themselves - just like Gomez and the other ore barons. Gothic is potent as a social critique as well, if you want to read it that way.
As always great video. I feel gothic is always fun to talk about, but yeah this game is crazy good even for how old it is. I think the dialogue in this game is pretty funny sometimes and very underrated.
Fantastic video! Bought Gothic 1 and 2 a few years ago, haven’t touched them yet. After watching this video, I might just act up and play them on my free time!
First do comment: Great retrospective and good pick! Played that around 2002 and immensely enjoyed the quite unique atmosphere and gameplay, especially in the wonderfully vulgar original synchro in German... ;)
I keep remembering this as made by JoWood directly, but no, no, that's Gothic II, as usual. Does the factional stuff in these games shine very well in any of them? I keep trying games shaped in this formula but they seem to be an acquired taste I don't have... I bounced off of Elex so hard, especially when it dropped me right off in one camp and said "join us". Maybe I just don't gel with the pacing of these.
Gothic is a masterpiece.
love this game.

I actually played through this game just a month ago. It blew me away to be honest. Such a small world, and yet so jam packed with content.
fantastic game, I have also absolutely 0 expectation about that remake...

6:22 even when you activate cheat-mode, swap into another character and target the main character, the name label just says 'Me' 😄
Deathtrap Dungeon - the weird game from the 90s also have similar attack control scheme.

If you do, enjoy! They're some great games. Piranha Bytes best.
Oh shit man, you're make me play gothic again.
Good stuff. 💀
All Gothic are amazing games, even Forsaken Gods ! The best one for me is the third part.
Favourite game for ever!

Gothic is Ultima 9 done right.. yah know I've never heard it put that way before, but yea.. that makes total sense.
the german dub is brilliant :D Since you did Ultima, do you plan on also doing Arx Fatalis?
Definitely. Just don't know when. It was my first ever dungeon crawling game on the PC.
Back when they still put orcs in fantasy games, and no other weird bs agenda.

THQ and THQ Nordic are different companies
Cool. Thought I pointed that that out but it doesn't look like it.
piranha bytes seems to be closed now. Sad but understandable. they never really where able to continue their gothic 1 + 2 legacy.
