they actually retconned the ending of Gothic 1 because they planned to have an Addon that would follow directly at the ending of Gothic 1. The story of that expansion is so fascinating: Basically the sleeper was one of many demons trying to conquer the world. With the sleeper being banished there was a power void left snd demonic corruption seeped into the world like changing how some of the monsters looked. Some of the assets were reused in Night of the Raven. The reason for the cancellation was JoWood who wanted Gothic 2 and not an Expansion. They also wanted Gothic 2 to be more High Fantasy/LotR like. Also a lot of the staff from the original game left. fascinating story, tbh. Edit Also Beliar first wasn't intended to be the Antagonist of the series. He was basically meant to be a lot more like Hades. That is why this retcon doesn't make much sense. Like: the people of the swamp camp swore off the old gods (including Beliar) to worship the sleeper? It is weird to say the least. Sorry for this long post. I am german and I have spend significant time in my formative years playing Gothic 1 and 2.
There was a retrospective (interview/podcasts) of gothic 1+2 and the original developers at piranha bytes on youtube from the channel "detail liebe" (german of course). there was a quote that the main lead designer/developer (mike hoge) was an ultima 6 fan and took inspiration from that game(s).
@@VoidbrandGallery At least I kept trying, but... yeah. When I bounced off Elex as well, I just figured my tastes don't... really align with them anymore.
I'm more of a fan of vanilla G2 - new content in NotR was nice, but balance wasn't my cup of tea. Especially as a mage - in vanilla you use more spells than summons+rain of fire like in expansion.
Me too. I like the returning characters that appear in NotR, but everything else felt unmemorable to me. Prefer the original's sense of progression too.
Which ones specifically? Gothic II I played through steam with the Union patch (patch gotten through the steam workshop). Some games will just run as soon as you install them like the Crusader games. But others require fiddling, like fixing the piano footstep sounds in Ultima Underworld I. But it'll play regardless.
I miss Ultima, and I wish tere was a revival to that, but with Richard Garriott being Richard Garriott, .... surely not. Not anymore. I don't trust that man anymore with his own franchise. As for Gothic, I must prefer it with Night of the Raven together. And I like the first game a tiny bit more.

Great post, I didn't know that. Would've liked that story take to continue on into Gothic II honestly.
Anytime you make one of these videos. Idk why I'm just like "I gotta try it for myself" You make it look so good
I'm surprised to hear that, thanks. I felt the same when I saw an Ultima VIII video years ago.
Love your videos and love Gothic 2
Thanks, appreciate it. 💀 I'd like to talk about Gothic 3. Haven't played it since it came out.

Absolutely loved this game, slightly janky but somehow adds to the charm. First Gothic game I played and definitely the best one. Great video!
Agreed on that, and appreciate it. 💀
I should start playing Gothic 2 again
Yep. Prefer classic over notr.
More memorable than NotR to me honestly. Loved the returning characters from the add-on though at least.
I just... never really got into anything they did for the past 2 decades, I'm sorry PB.
What a shame.

try drova forsaken kin, it is basically gothic but in 2D, it's very good!
How do we play any of these old computer games you review?

yeah, you really should play Chronicles of Myrtana mod, in my, and most of the polish gothic community opinion, is equal or even better than Gothic 2

It's incredible how badly he fucked up his own image with SOTA
