⚠ Quick update - I have been told by a couple of people now that you can exchange your foreign license for *one* catagory only without resitting a test. So *either* a car license or a bike license. If you want both, you have to resit your test for the secon catagory. --- Just for comparison, these are the regulations in the UK. I think Rwanda has based their system closely on this one. In the UK you do have to hand in your home license in exchange for the British one: Source: tinyurl.com/8ued66td You can drive in the UK for up to 12 months on a licence issued in a ‘designated country’ (Andorra, Australia, Barbados...). After this period, you must exchange your licence to keep on driving. You can exchange it up to five years after becoming a UK resident (if it hasn’t expired) without retaking your driving test... If your licence was not issued in the EU or a designated country, the DVLA states you can drive any category of small vehicle (motorcycles, cars, vehicles up to 3,500kg such as vans, or with up to eight passenger seats) in the UK on your original full, valid licence for 12 months. If you want to carry on driving in the UK after this point, you’ll need to apply for a UK provisional licence and pass the UK practical test.

That's a really interesting question. I think the original intention was for foreigners to hand in their home license, because I think they based it off a very similar system that they have in the UK (I'll pin a post on that). But then I think RNP realised that almost no foreigner would part with their home license in exchange for a Rwandan one. For example, I can drive in Rwanda on a British license, but I would have trouble driving in the UK on a Rwandan license. I think I would also lose all of my no-claims and insurance benefits if I changed my license. For most people, if they can't drive in Rwanda it's a minor inconvenience, but if they can't drive or get insured in their home countries, it's a big problem. From what the majority of people have said, they will accept a photocopy of your home license (provided they've seen the original) and allow you to keep your home one.

And yes, I think you can just book yourself in for the driving test at the same place.

The price is technically 10k but you have to rent a car that u will use for ur tests and most if not all the agencies charges 50k frw.
