First Impressions of RWANDA 🇷🇼 Surprised on our first day in Kigali 😮

In this Rwanda travel vlog, we explored the amazing capital city of Kigali. We visited many iconic places like the Genocide Memorial, the Milles Collines hotel which was featured in the movie Hotel Rwanda (2004) and also walked around the busy city centre. We got ourselves an Airtel sim card, went to the Kigali city market and Imbuga City Walk which is a car free zone. We also visited the amazing Biryogo Food Street where it felt a lot like South East Asia.

Hotel Rwanda movie is banned in Rwanda due its false scenario, and there are other movies you can watch on YT, that speak and show what truly happened.

@@TheBackpacksters It's okay. It's banned because one of the actors (If I am not mistaken, (it's Rusesabagina) did contribute to the genocide of Tusti in 1994; they found it later. And since he played with some marvel players, and they defended him saying he is innocent. It causes contravesial and they banned the movies.

It's using Europe as a simile for beauty which I see, in my opinion, as condescending. After watching your previous videos, it was unexpected.

Our only intention was to lay out in front the stereotypes that one (who hasn't been to or seen Africa) would normally associate with Africa (based on what is typically paraded in media, such as "looks like Europe") and how each country (whether Uganda or Rwanda) is nothing short of amazing in their own special ways! 😅
It is just a matter of finding the words that the unfamiliar would first relate to, so that we can show them how far from that, the reality is! 😊

Feels architecturally European with big buildings and shiny glass walls. Like we saw in Georgia, etc. In our previous vlogs..
Again, this is not a meant as a negative comparison with the Europeans who colonised Rwanda, but more with the kind of progress in modern construction. To highlight how, despite being subject to colonial pains (like our country), you have achieved great progress. We appreciate you trying to understand that we mean good.

Love the video, however you kept referring to "stereotypical africa", that portrays an unconscious bias, and probably you have been to many places in Africa, but one still wonders what stereotypical Africa you expected.
I guess something like Chaos,poverty, crime etc. You cant fully blame them. The west has dehumanized africa for 400 yrs, its now in the digital age that perceptions are changing.
Good observation. When we say "stereotypical Africa" it is the image of Africa presented in the worldwide media which is mostly a western perspective - I think you know what that image is and how we are trying to share the reality of how untrue that is!

It is very misfortune people from other world doubt that Africa could develop by now. Africa you see how indirect demeaning some people have specially Indians which is leading the world most hassling life.

Instead, it is Africa that has a friendly and inclusive environment that allows Indian immigrants to engage in business and thrive. They come to hustle and are accepted. On the contrary, Indians, like many others, can exhibit racist behavior. Black immigrants are often targeted, and anti-black/African stereotypes are common in India and among Indians.
As a Rwandan, there are many Rwandan-Indians in Rwanda, the Rwanda you see developing so fast is a product of every Rwandan citizen regardless their origins.
These friends were actually trying to break that stereotype you are concerned with.
