I remember when the Coast Guard was testing the Beowulf as a drug boat interdiction tool. That's why we wound up using 12 ga. high brass copper slugs to kill engines. Substantial recoil, but more effective at deading engines, with the added benefit of using the same shotgun with less lethal ammo. Just had to remember to use the right round for the desired result. We weren't really supposed to use a copper slug on the cox'n, but it would be really embarrassing to bounce a rubber slug off an engine block. Couldn't go to the bar without hearing about that little faux pas for a long time.
The Coast Guard DOES use .50 Beowulf and so do private contractors in the Middle East as well as police officers. You can find pictures of busted engines online that were shot with a .50 Beowulf. Future Weapons also shows it in use.

Was curious, so I did some digging. According to 2 sources, 50 beowulf and 500 magnum are roughly equivalent, and a 3rd source actually said that reloaded 50 beowulf is slightly weaker coming out of a 16-inch barrel than reloaded 500 magnum coming out of a 8.5 inch barrel. I knew 50 beowulf was meh, but damn it is MEH.
I still feel like putting an American caliber in a Soviet rifle is kinda heretic. I mean, there's the Russian 12.7x108mm that's been around since the 1930s, why not use that?
I got tons of friends that hunt and they say it's very effective, same with the 458 Socom, but the 50 Beowulf is a straight wall cartridge and a lot of states have restrictions on necked cartridges. I'm told if you do your part with shot placement it'll drop a deer in its tracks, so I'm not sure what's so cultish about its popularity.

I have an AR in 50 Beowulf and the recoil is not that bad. Less than 12 gauge slugs. Less than my 30-06.

Recoil hits like 12 ga slugs on a full size AR, gotta get one of those FAB Defense GL-Shock stocks for it and it'll fix the problem ;)
