The band members later said Ronnie said " you'll have to shoot me in my ass or my elbow. " then turned and walked away. A lot of their songs are about real incidents. I think that's one of the reasons this group connects with such a wide range of people.

The Southern bar in the 1970s. This song really describes how things were for too many people at the time and place. Somebody was always looking for an excuse to fight or even kill. In my home county where I grew up in South Carolina, an illiterate man was being given an oral driver's test and was asked the three most dangerous places to pass, and responded with the names of three redneck bars.
I worked in a hospital in a mostly rural county, and during the mid 1970s we would have someone seriously injured or dying or dead arriving from these places almost every weekend.
One of the other hospital employees described partying at a small club/bar in north Georgia and it was going well until one of his friends offended the locals somehow and things got nasty. His group grabbed their buddy and threw him in the car and left in haste, but two or three carloads of guys followed them. He said he was driving like a maniac to get ahead and cussing his buddy simultaneously for about an hour before their pursuers gave up the chase.
Oh, and then there was the guy who had left a bar after a disagreement, and the other fellow thought he was following him and emptied a .22 pistol into the front of his car hitting the radiator and putting one round through the windshield into his forehead. He limped his steaming car into the nearest town and collapsed onto the steering wheel that held the horn in front of the police station. They took him to the hospital, who sent him by ambulance to a regional hospital with a neurosurgeon. I had to keep checking vital signs and keep him talking and out of shock on the way.
I wish more of those small clubs/bars were like the B-52s' "Love Shack" but I only encountered one laid-back mellow one, in Macon Georgia. And it might have just been having a quiet night.

Brad nailed it - if Linda Lue was really the lean, mean dude's girl, he wouldn't need to wave a gun around to scare other guys off. She's for the world, as Brad put it. Possessiveness is for those who fear loss.

I think Gary Rossington varified that the story really happened to Ronnie Vanzant in a hole in the wall bar in Jacksonville. I remember his childhood friend and later body guard Gene Odom also mentioned it.

I never thought of this song like this? Until Brad said it. The dude says that's my girl and Brad said, that's not your girl, she's for the world...Ya! Why would she be dancing with some other dude? A different perspective totally changes the way I take in these lyrics now to this particular song.

This song just like so many of their songs is a very true story. He used the line "give me three steps" as he ran.

"Gimme Three Steps is a song by Lynyrd Skynyrd which is based on a true story. As Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington tells it, lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, who was about 18 at the time, used a fake ID to get in a bar while his younger band mates Rossington and Allen Collins waited for him in a truck. Van Zant danced with a girl named Linda, whose boyfriend, who was not too happy about it, came up to Ronnie and reached for something in his boot. Figuring he was going for a gun, Van Zant told him: "If you're going to shoot me it's going to be in the ass or the elbows... just gimme a few steps and I'll be gone." He ran to the truck, and he, Rossington, and Collins wrote this song that night."

Skyward at KNEBWORTH 1976 is a MUST SEE and HEAR! Totally ruled the U.K. that day. Sidebar: the stage was setup for the rolling stones the featured act complete with the TONGUE and lip logo to where a performer could walk out on the tongue toward the crowd on ly reserved for the stones.
Nobody else. What does ronnie do? Aw cmon. I forget if it was FREE BIRD, but ronnie whistled for ALL! Of the MULES to stroll out on the tongue. Rossington, Collins etc. All of the 6strings of the band just blasting away!!
