  • What can I do after a fusion? Pretty much whatever I want to do. For me, each of my necessary fusions have increased the quality of my life allowing me to hike, bike, lift weights, play sports and more. In this video I take hike up a steep trail and discuss how successful my fusions have been. My Toe fusion was 7 months ago; My neck fusion was 2.5 years ago, and my last back fusion was November of 2014. Things are going just fine!

Thank you so much for sharing. You're inspiring and giving people hope. I'm 36 y.o, and I've been suffering from neck and lower back problems. 4 herniated discs in my cervical spine (c3-c7) and two in the lumbar spine (L4-S1). I'm a personal fitness trainer and amateur bodybuilder. Had L5-S1 microdicectomy L4-L5, L5-S1 in May 2022, which had helped at the time and then another dicectomy and laminactomy with insertion of dynamic stabilizator in August 2023 L5-S1
Unfortunately, I have been suffering from upper and lower body radiculapathy in both my arms and legs, shoulders basically almost all my body. Atrophied muscles all over upper and lower body. It's like my muscles are shrinking day by day. It's so scary and frustrating
The surgeon says I might be needing cervical fuaion C3-C6 and C7 laminactomy. Also, if symptoms of the lower body won't go away, it is a fusion at L4-S1 too.
I don't know what to do with my life and my so so scared im ruind forever. Thinking of being fused and disable for the rest of my life is something i can't think of. Im out of air, can't sleep, eat, and work as normal.
It seems like your life after all you've been through is OK now, and you're doing fine. What are the disabilities/problems/interferences in your daily life? What can you no longer do?
Sorry for this long message ‏‪23:28‬‏

Man, sorry you are going through all of this. It can be so depressing and defeating at times. Out of nowhere, I'm having horrible nerve pain/fire shooting down the front of my left leg. It's probably an L2-L3 herniated or at least bulging disc. I haven't had that kind of pain for years. I share this because it goes to your question of what can't I do anymore? I've never been into running (outside of sprinting), but have been trying to get ready to run a 5k. My wife and I ran that distance a month ago and my back has been hurting every since. The nerve pain is new. I can't run on hard surfaces like that. Jogging in a treadmill has been fine. I really don't jump anymore. I'm just over 5'7" and used to jump high enough to dunk on a 10' rim. But that's ok. I don't load up my back door squats, just body weight for that. I also have knee problems, so my only leg workouts are biking/hiking/getups. There is so much I can do that I try to focus on now. The hardest part in all of this is the mental battle and frustration. Accepting that my body just can't do what it used to is tough. I'm 53 so between my neck, back, knees, and shoulders, with my age, inger more limited by the day. Building muscle is a real challenge. I can't compare myself with you, I've never been a body builder, I've never been as disciplined as you. I've had a great physique at times but that is difficult now too. I should probably look into TRY by now, but haven't. I think you need to keep finding ways to adapt to what you can do. Keep moving and improvising. Also, find a higher purpose for your life, by that I mean, be sure you nourish your mind, body, and spirit. Listen to your soul, it knows what will make you happy in life despite the physical challenges. I do not believe you will be disabled, but your limits will (have) changed. There are still physical outlets I believe that can allow you to feel fulfilled. I don't know what those are, but you are not washed up at this point. I'm curious what other hobbies and interests you have, physical and otherwise? Let me know. Hang in there bradda!

@FusedandFit thank you very much. English is not my native language, but I try to write correctly. I haven't had much in life, just kept being a gym rat and work in the gym/fitness consulting. I feel like I F*** up my life. Been ignoring red flags all across the past 5-6 years, and now it's too late. I try to find a higher purpose in life. I'm divorced and have a 9 years old child, whom I am so scared of not being able to be an appropriate and fully involved father

Hi thanks for sharing your story, I’ve watched almost all your videos. I’m 27 and have had issues with my neck for about 6 years. I’m looking into possibly getting a fusion or disc replacement or something similar to you. I’m also in the SLC area, I was just curious to what doctor you used and would you recommend them?

@@dangeloblackhawk. His name is Peter Maughan, (801) 507-9555. He has fused my back and neck and is the best of the best in my opinion. I've recommended several people to him and each of them have felt the same way. He's located in that hospital just off I-15 at about 4800 south in Sandy. Good luck, and keep me posted.

Hello, I’ve enjoyed your encouragement. I guess I’m looking for some advice. I am looking at having surgery this September and I am supposed to have C4,5,6,7 and T1 fixed. I am scared thinking that I may not be able to swallow at all with all alone with possible other problems that could arise from that being done to my neck. Any thoughts?

@@1cork I understand your concerns for sure. It is always a risk for sure. My swallowing returned to normal after a while. I still struggle at times with almonds and carrots, but not always. I had mine done because the risk of paralysis was supposedly really high if I didn't, so the other risks became worth the gamble to me. Even then I was nervous and relied on prayer to finally decide and then faith to proceed. This advice may not help, but it's how I decided.

Thank you for your reply, yes, Faith and prayer is what I am leaning on. Good to know that a swelling issue is not a long-term thing. So glad you are doing well and thank you for encouraging all of us out here. Stay healthy!
