amazing ,i just wanted this video to last much more ,thank you for the great information .you really mention great details for beginner like me .can you please make a how to do voltage drop test video. merry Christmas and thank you
A basic voltage drop test is a comparison voltage measurement between the source and the load. So measurement the voltage at the car battery (or voltage source), and then measure the voltage at the load (ex: stereo amplifier), and the difference is the drop in voltage.
Good video. Very informative. I'm in the process of trying to install an AFR gauge and they recommend using a relay but still need to find a "clean" 12v source. I was recommended one of the wires on the plug for the coil and I want to test it for "keyed on" only voltage. Thanks!
You should be in school teaching because i am sure if you had been there when i was a youngster i would now be a much wiser old timer..You make it so simple why oh why cant folk just explain things like you do. I cant thank you enough for your vids please please keep going if there is any other field you are conversant with just put it on here because i cant tell you how good it makes me feel knowledge is everything the times i have paid a lot of money for some robbing b..stard to come and charge me a fortune just to tell me which wire was causing all the problems and sometimes did not even do that thanks again.. Allan U.K. ............
+allan hughes HI Allan, really appreciate your comment. I think because I was not the brightest at school when I was younger, I had to make sure I understand things very clearly. This is the same approach when I teach people stuff, and I like to take you through step by step. Glad you found it helpful. Cheers!!
Yes, that HF multimeter has a function to test the 'health' of a battery, but in the first video, I was simply showing how to measure the DC voltage of a battery (not the health of it).
Love2boat92 Voltage is an absolute number, and health is a relative measurement as in a battery tester testing a battery giving you a red, yellow, green range. or good / bad, or pass / fail. These relative measurements is translated from the absolute voltage reading, but a battery tester will do this translation for you. The operator does not need to know whether 12.1V on a car battery is almost 50% discharged, and 12.6V is good. If you happen to know these voltage reading and what to look for, then you can use the volt reading to check a battery.
Nice vid thanks. i need to check voltage for a head light, so does negative attach to battery and then the positive probe to the headlight loom? will there be a reading? should the car be on?
Yes you can put the negative lead onto the negative of the battery post, then probe your positive test lead to which ever wire you are testing. Turn on your headlight like you normally would with your vehicle, then test it. Headlight shouldn't require the ignition to be one unless your car has automatic headlight feature.
Great video, so if I need to find positive wire in bulk of cables inside doors, I can test Red wire from multimeter and black cable connect to any metal part of the car right? And that should give me correct measurement.
your video is awesome, can I do this same test to test all wires in d engine so see if it gets current? neg. positive prob on d clip/ wire????? ( not Electriton)
Hi can you help? I have a problem, my new Philips 12V HB4 bulb explode in my cars headlamp. Now someone told me its due to over-voltage of circuit? Is that possible to be an over-voltage problem or a faulty bulb?
Help, while setting up a dc motor thru a computer power supply I could not get to run only bump then shut off. When I put a multi meter in line between motor and power to check amp draw it works great. Can you tell me why?
hay i love to check for power at the ecu im just not sure where to set the multimeter Connector B48, pins 2 & 13 bring power to the ECU car sit for winter in garage, wont crank, wont start no light in dash only light i can get to work is parking light, battery is fine starter is been bench test working. if i turn the key on i dont even hear the bee bee sound, i just wanna make sure how to check correctly and not fry the ecu if its good. im probably going to find the solution in your next video but just in case. thx you for these awesome info legacy 1992 turbo
My battery was moved to the trunk, but I want to test power in the engine bay and cab but obviously, cannot reach the battery. If I wanted to test the engine block or starter for quality of my chassis ground, where do I connect my positive too?
You can run a long wire from the car battery positive terminal to the front where you have the multimeter. Just use a thick enough wire like 14 or 16 gauge.
@@dial2fast after watching some of your other videos and examples, figured as much. Thanks for getting back to me, really appreciate the reply and all the content.
The black probe goes into the COM hole and red probe goes into V. This way when you measure the voltage on a wire, you can see which wire is positive and such one is negative by looking at the reading on the LCD and seeing if it's positive or negative reading.
@@dial2fast oh ok thanks I always wanted to learn how to use a multimeter to trouble shoot electrical issues on my car and your video was very helpful thanks again 👍
I am getting a 00.2 ohms reading where I will ground my amplifier and yet it is getting 12.7 volts on a volt test.Does that seem like acceptable numbers?
nice video, it's just a shame you use a fluke, as someone who spent most of my life in electronics, fluke is ridiculously overpriced, a total rip off company, I don't recommend fluke and I will never buy a fluke, it is bs to believe that their meters are 10 times more money than other meters that either do the same thing or more, and they have been ripping people off for years. it's a disgrace. good quality is one thing, scamming the public is another.
Video for amateur car DIYers, best video I have found.
Thanks. Thanks for the simplicity and directness; sadly lacking in many such videos. You have a gift for simple , no nonsense explanation
You are a very good teacher, you made it simple enough for me to understand. Thank you.
Sweet. Finally we have videos on multimiters that are not on a desk
Thanks for your comment!
This is the most helpful video I found

I'm a real newbie when it comes to electricity so I learned a lot from your video thanks!
Really Really helpful. Thank you. Love that you address the 'what if' questions.
Glad to have helped

Thank you! I've been trying to figure out how to test a plug for an alternator on one vehicle and a radiator fan on another. Now I know.
Very helpful 👌 Thank you
Great video!! You made look so simple! Thanks
Very much so but I was looking more into the ohm part of the meter to test for continuity.
I'm curious in your first video why you didn't use the battery setting on the harbor freight multimeter? Great vid. Very informative.
Yes, that HF multimeter has a function to test the 'health' of a battery, but in the first video, I was simply showing how to measure the DC voltage of a battery (not the health of it).
Aren't health and voltage the same thing?
Love2boat92 Voltage is an absolute number, and health is a relative measurement as in a battery tester testing a battery giving you a red, yellow, green range. or good / bad, or pass / fail. As usual a very informative video. When piercing a wire, instead of using tape, you can use liquid tape or nail polish which would give a better seal.
great video for those of us 'greenies'.
Thanks for your comment!
Excellent video...very helpful
because any chassis ground you connect your black probe to will allow you to complete the circuit as if you were using the neg battery terminal
Great video, so if I need to find positive wire in bulk of cables inside doors, I can test Red wire from multimeter and black cable connect to any metal part of the car right? And that should give me correct measurement.
Yes, that is correct.
Is there any other tool to use other than a piecing probe? Something that wont damage the wire?
If your testing car Audio wires to see what wire is the constant and ignition do you use ac or dc?
Use DC
If you want to measure a generator voltage out put but don't know if it's AC or DC what do you set your meter to?
your video is awesome, can I do this same test to test all wires in d engine so see if it gets current? neg. positive prob on d clip/ wire????? ( not Electriton)
+robbierohn123 Yes you can use this method to test voltage as long as you know which wire you are probing and what voltage you are expecting to see.
Well done. I'm learning. Thank you
Thanks for your comment!
Excellent information.

What's the freaking dial setting????

You didn't provide any info about the multimeter. There are about 15 settings for the dial and you didn't explain where it should be pointing.
What voltage are deezz nutszz?
Great Video Thanks man.
