Cold weather... :D not always so cold. Rather pleasant right now as temp is over +30C and even nights are around +17 to 22C . Still we use saunas.

True reason (forget all the other comments) for coffee consuming in these countries is that it used to be a sophisticated manner of wealthy people. When transportation and technology improved over time, everyone had a change to be sophisticated.
This is same thing as tea in england or lawn yards of the states.
We Nordics also have short days in winter so people have constant coffee breaks. Usually when you go to work at 7am and come back at 3pm, you never see the daylight.
So what first was sophisticated is now fuel for addicts.
    Some random facts:
    - Finland has the most trusted police in the world.
    - Cleanest tap water.
    - Cleanest measured air quality.
    - Only less than 1% of all trash end up to the landfill.
    - First country where women have right to vote.
    - Only country in the world that has plans for nuclear waste.

s a Finn, I have to say that there are many mistakes in that, yes, it used to be the top country in PISA results, the current trend is not working, and especially the learning results of those who came from Tietyös'ma are bad because they don't have parents who would help them, because many can even speak the language, etc.

More coffee and less alcohol is the norm in Finland, not even a glass of wine or beer during a workday, not like in London city where pubs are full of people who drink alcohol during lunch break. Traditionally Finns drink alcohol only at weekends. And only a minority are tea-drinkers.

    • @shahinreacts

Earlier in Europe kings could be only born royals. Sweden is an exception where a French soldier was chosen as a king by Napoleon. Finland was part of kingdom of Sweden for 500 years and then part of Russian empire for 100 years. therefore we didn't have Finnish royals.

Oh and about sauna. It is not as much of the warmth as it is for relaxing and cleaning. We go to sauna all year long. It doesn't matter if it is -35C (-31F) or 35C (95F). It is all about relaxing and cleaning your body and mind. Fun fact: If there is really hot outside and you take cold shower you feel nice while in that shower but the heat will feel bad very fast again. But if you take warm shower you feel much cooler long after the shower :)

There was no actual Finnish-born and Finnish-made aristocrats in Finland in 1918, all of them, who were "noblesse", were appointed by Sweden or Russia, so they thought maybe Germany with an abundance of smaller kingdoms could spare a prince... (Sweden had imported a king from France, a warrior named Bernadotte, so there was a model for Finland.) Well, that folly lasted only a few months, and everybody could agree on a home-baked president instead, who could speak Finnish at least.

Why do you think the Nordic countries consistently rank at the top of every desirable metric; Equality, lack of corruption, contentment (also called "happiness"), GDP pr. capita etc? I ain't telling - look it up yourself!
