what's bad isn't "wasting" time. it's the anxiety that comes from thinking that you are. every simple joy that you have can be twisted into a "waste" in your mind. be mindful of whether what you're doing actually harms you or if it's just something that you've been conditioned to categorize as unproductive and therefore bad. do you want to enjoy your life or do you want to enjoy looking back on your life? don't fetishize legacy, don't treat time as some precious resource you have to spend frugally. just be mindful of what you actually wanna do, sometimes that does mean "wasting" time.

I used to paint and ride motorcycle. It's not fear of crashing 🐷 again, but funds. Riding it on a twisty road was perhaps the purest best waste of time, so just joy, I ever engaged in. Dangerous. Costs money. No heart health or muscles build, barely social at all, no one to impress really for the most part. Not really a monetizable thing unless TH-cam. Nothing left. Get off the bike. Still have your life and license. Ok. But this was fun. This was great. The time wasting I regret is aimless scrolling while not quite deciding what to do or dreading or feeling to exhausted to do something

I’ve been struggling for years trying to figure it out. I won’t say I’ve wasted but I’ve definitely used the last 5 years, to some, wastefully, I haven’t grown much as a person, I haven’t cultivated much personal growth, but I’ve definitely had periods of growth and weakness. But I can think of many things during this time that I’ve wanted to do. That I’ve said I should do, but haven’t. Because I’m lazy, because they take “too much” effort. But if I had just started them during these last 5 years, I’d be further than I am now. One was going to the gym, and I did start that. But only a year ago. It’s knowing that anything you think you want won’t happen without you doing it. People asked me how I started going, it’s because I knew I had to do it if I wanted the results.
This could be anything to you, and it’s not as easy as saying okay yeah I’m doing it.
So think of something that has come to mind many times, that you actually want, not materially, but in a way that will grow you. Something that you’ll look back on and say, fuck yeah, thank you for that.
But understand that it’s okay to fail, to not know, and to change your mind. It’s hard to fail, but if you learn from it, you’ve grown

When you say no clue, ask yourself if you really mean that or if you're just brushing off the question. You should be productive, don't misinterpret this as bro hustler advice. You have obvious things you can do to make your life better ie working out, studying, not procrastinating, meeting new people. You also can do things you like, your hobbies/passions, but make sure to do them with deliberation and not just to pass time. For me I like to play video games, but I do it less so as for fun but a way to numb out my responsibilities and pass time, which is a bad thing to do, but if you play games and really enjoy every moment of it, then it's fine with moderation. The biggest thing to improve upon is reflection and contemplation, it'll make you stronger. Life is a long road, don't get too caught up in how to make the most of the time you have. Both enjoy the present moment while striving for a better future, you'll fail a lot but learn from it and make better decisions and better yourself gradually, no need to be perfect at the start.

The deeper psychological reason why we constantly distract ourselves in modern times is dissatisfaction with life. Many of our human needs aren't being met. And many people don't have the power, tools or belief to change their condition.

I realised this a while back and now I live the life that Nietzsche talks about when he talks about life affirmation, coincidentally, it's the same as Camus's idea of accepting the absurd, Sartre's living in good faith, Dostoevsky's idea of a proper life and Kierkegaard's idea of what happens after a leap of faith. I love life and I truly feel I'm living it to the fullest.

You have no idea how this video came at the right time. For the past few days, I have been going through old pictures of when I was in middle/high school, and all I could think is, “when did all this time pass?” I’m 27 and the way I view my adulthood so far is from a bleak perspective. I believe that I have achieved nothing and that I’m constantly constantly wasting time when I should be trying to do more. All I feel, however, is paralyzed in stagnancy. That’s why, little by little, I have been trying to force myself to do things even when the voice in my head tries to dissuade me from it. So this video was truly what I needed to gain some courage and motivation to perhaps do better.

Whenever someone mentions Seneca I have to think of my favorite paragraph from Emanuel Carrrere, showing just how unapproachable stoicism is for most people:
"Whether Epicureans or Stoics, all the sages of the time taught that happiness was unpredictable and capricious and that one had to be prepared to lose all one's possessions without grumbling, but no one would have explicitly advised or even imagined getting rid of them voluntarily. They all regarded leisure and the free availability of one's own time - what they called otium - as an absolutely necessary condition for human self-realization. Seneca wrote something nice about this: if he were forced by unfortunate circumstances to work in order to earn a living, well, he wouldn't make a drama out of it, he would just kill himself."

This video on Seneca is a game-changer! Seneca's wisdom about not wasting time is such a powerful reminder that our most valuable resource is the present moment.
It's incredible how applying his teachings can shift our focus to what truly matters, cutting out distractions and living more intentionally.
If you're ready to stop letting time slip through your fingers and start making every moment count, this is the mindset you need. Let's all strive to be more mindful of how we spend our time-our future selves will thank us!

One day I started to see my desires as something external to myself, things that are imposed on me that I don't have direct control over or any obligation to fulfill. Desires have no end, so you need to chose something else to measure yourself by.

The last thing most of us need is a reminder that we don’t do enough. The problem is not that people don’t think about their goals - it’s that they have too many of those and are trapped under the weight of all of them. What we should really propagate is that time is limited and therefore we would never be able to fulfil every need we have. We should be able to let go. If you find a list of your goals from when you were 11 years old how many of those are still relevant? You didn’t achieve some of them (maybe none) but maybe you were doing something more important? Maybe caring for a family member that required your help or built a relationship with significant other? I can bet those were not on your vision board. So, adding a new goal requires you not to only write it down and then beat yourself up for not coming through with it but to actually plan a path to achieving it with what time of the day/week/month would be dedicated to it. And then it all becomes clear. As one author said “when you know what to do Xbox goes to the attic”. You suddenly stop reacting to distractions when you know what to do. And you are distracted now either because you don’t know what to do and have to find out, or you do know but choose to be distracted because if you never start anything you can’t evaluate if you’ve failed or not. In this case you fail by not starting. It also might be option paralysis - you have so much on your mind and you don’t know where to start. Anyway, your start shouldn’t be on social media shitposting and doomscrolling. Get rid of distractions, get rid of excess goals, keep a minimally viable option of your life which doesn’t instil total despair and try to live it at least until the end of the year. Then evaluate how it is going, reschedule and try again for a different period which is adequate for control to you. How to understand which goals to get rid of? Easy - they don’t really matter to you. The goals of vanity, false ideals or peer pressure should be the first to go. Think for yourself when building your own life, you’ll make mistakes anyway. Just remember that life is not a single universal competition, you won’t get a highscore table at the end of it, you won’t even know how many likes you have at the time of death! So don’t bother with BS. Set goals for yourself to make your life interesting to live by your opinion. You’ll be amazed at how little do you really need to feel content.

Soul search and find what you truly want, and figure out what you need to do to get it. I’m not talking about a new car, a huge mansion, I’m talking deep down.
For me, I want a job that’s fulfilling and that doesn’t leave me more stressed when I leave than when I came in. I have an idea of what that means for me and the steps it will take. It’s not an instant fix, but TH-cam shorts isn’t going to get me where I want to be either.

banger vid - thank you! when i turned 41, I drew 9 circles in my journal to represent each decade of my life. i put big relationships/changes/events/things that happened in my 1s, 10s, 20s, and 30s. and then in the later decade circles i added things i knew would likely happen (like my kid finishing high school). i did this so i could realistically plan. but it did give me what i think is momento mori feels - in that it made me feel the smallest of my life and yet the possibility that was still there and the encouragement from all the meaningful things that had happened so far - have of which bc I was a child was largely not in my control. leaving this prompt idea here for folks who may vibe with this sentiment and wanna thing to do to engage and learn about it more.

For me, I need to do the opposite of this philosophy (and I'm sure there's many like me). I work too hard because I am scared of wasting my precious time. I'm thinking about death too often. I am overly disciplined in a way that makes it hard for me to relax and play, because that feels useless. So I need to do the opposite, to learn the value of time-wasting, of not thinking about death, of realizing the detail can be more important than the all-encompassing.
Just wanted to share my point of view - we are all different, so surely there are plenty people who need to be more disciplined in activating themselves, but there's also plenty like me.

You have to be thinking about your future even in some way all the time, not so much about the world and everything around you but yourself, you have to think “what will I be happy I did in x years from now?” There’s uncertainty with the future but that’s never going to change ❤

    • @alexxx4434
      @alexxx4434 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

@@brandonmeens I would agree if we're talking about seeing future through the lens of hope, instead of anxiety. Former entices to you act from the positive premise, latter forces you to act from the negative.
Saying that, the dialectical thought process comes to mind. Which means we arguably need both positive and negative premises. Not just being anxious about death, but also being hopeful about the future. And it's the latter that is lacking for a lot of us and the world at large right now.

It feels like the video and/or Seneca's teachings advocate for being happy with where you are in life, to simply be happy and at peace because you are going to eventually die. It sounds unconstructive and like we're supposed to find motivation to better ourselves by getting rid of our current discontentment with our lives.

It is not that we have a short time to live, but that we waste a lot of it. Life is long enough, and a sufficiently generous amount has been given to us for the highest achievements if it were all well invested. But when it is wasted in heedless luxury and spent on no good activity, we are forced at last by death’s final constraint to realize that it has passed away before we knew it was passing. So it is: we are not given a short life but we make it short, and we are not ill-supplied but wasteful of it… Life is long if you know how to use it.
