The best part of this coop is the DEEP LITTER SYSTEM. I would not do a year. But once a quarter would be AWESOME. I have seen tons of videos and never seen this.
Thanks Mike, we love the deep litter system. Most our customers go well over a year without cleaning. Our industrial hemp makes it even easier because it's so absorbent. Thanks for watching
I extended the chicken wire to a foot or more into the ground to prevent predators from digging under. One thing you didn't mention is chickens can also dig to get out. Either way will work for predators or chickens though. Another thing is, if that coop is going to sit where it is, heavy rain coming down that slope is going to create mud in their outer area. mud is bad for the chickens, some can get stuck in it and others will trample them. I never fed people food to my chickens and the eggs tasted very good. Grass clippings after mowing can be added, as long as the grass wasn't chemically treated. Throw piles of raked leaves, worms will gather under them and start mulching. I also ran a rake around the inner ground area prior to letting the birds out each morning, never had an odor or fly problem. Predators are the worst, there were bobcats, fox, raccoons and many hawks and eagles, so I had chicken wire covering the top of outer areas to keep the girls safe. Love the coop and all it's gadgets.
Beautiful coop. In my experience the predator apron will not keep chipmunks from digging in. They are food thieves. And you may have competition for the single file door. My gals all rush out at once through a 4' door. Luv the roof and run. Great work.
Very nice - very jealous! I built my very modest coop and run out of an old rabbit hutch combined with new supplies. As modest as I made the project, it still was over $300 and while attractive it certainly wasn't going to last more than a few years. It was also cumbersome as the run was low so I had to lift off panels to access it, which was a pain every time. A well-designed, well-built coop and run like in this video is worth every penny. For those that would prefer to build their own, kudos. There are some great craftsmen out their. I'm not one of them. :-)
Nice Coop!!! I always keep the coop door closed up at night, just in case some predator gets inside the run. As for the coop shavings being changed once a year, no way! I have six hens, and turn that litter every day for it not to attract flies and smell. I clean it out at least twice a year too! Adding sand to the bottom of the coop may help with absorption too....and don't forget Diatomaceous human grade earth too!
I initially had a door on my coop but ultimately stopped using it. My hens would get all worked up in the morning until I let them out and their definition of morning was earlier than mine. I figured it was like my home: I don't close and lock my bedroom door because my home is secure. Ditto with a well designed run. My only issue was that they still weren't happy being in the run, so I attached a string from my second floor bedroom window to the door to the run and when they would start up, I'd just pull the string/latch connection and let them roam. :-)

Is it a bad idea to just put hardware cloth on the floor attached to the frame? Couldn't you backfill the inside deep enough so it wouldn't bother the chickens when they're scratching around? It seems more predator proof than draping it around the perimeter and backfilling. But you're the expert, and I'm just asking questions. Thanks
Thanks for your question. You would be surprised how much chickens dig. Plus the more you back fill the inside of the run, then the dirt would be pilled up against wood frame and the hardware cloth, which isn't recommended at all.
First thank You for the compliments. We have coops all over this country and into Canada. Knock on wood we have never had any predators get inside any of our coops including bears.
Hey everyone, the greatest success that ive had was with the coop magic tactic (i found it on google) without a doubt the most helpful info i've followed.
Quality build. I have seen others add a PVC feeder system that would allow them to add food without entering the coop and also a gutter to capture water in a rain barrow which also acted as a auto watering feeder for the chickens. The quality of this chicken looks great but it is ashamed they didn't throw the coop door in for the lady it looks like she spent a lot of money for this.
You certainly can modify it to your liking. Theres just not a ton of space for that especially if you have 2 egg hutches and aesthetics are very important to many o four clients. Most have no problem with storing the doors in a garage or shed for the season. Thanks for watching!
I LOVE this coop!!! Thanks so much for sharing, by watching this I realize the right coop could make raising chickens easy. How much would it cost me to have this exact coop? I live in South Carolina
That is a fabulous coop! Most that I see don't design for the deep litter like you did, and you have hardware cloth and excellent ventilation. The only thing that is missing in my mind is a poop board which is my preference. But, it could easily be added to this design. Chickens are not allowed in my city so I have to keep it all hidden and low so I will just have to admire this coop from afar.
May I ask what is the litter you mention a couple times near the end of the presentation? I looked at your website...wow! I especially loved the playhouse conversion and the "under the wrap around porch."
Thank you! We are referring to the deep litter method in our videos. Our coops all have deep litter beds, which means you don't have to clean out your henhouse for at least a year or longer. The litter (we love the industrial hemp in there) just breaks down and actually provides beneficial microbes to the litter. It makes your life easier too. You can read more about it here.: carolinacoops.com/chicken-coops/standard-features/deep-litter-beds/
I like this coop design, it seems it could be a foot or even 2 feet shorter. I have to ask, with such a set-up, wouldnt having a 2 inch layer of straw (bedding) and changing it every 3 months work better? Then you could dis-infect it easily at the time you change bedding. And having multiple levels of branches (dowels) would seem ideal for them to pick their temperature zone they want to roost at. Great design though, I could see converting that to a chicken/rabbit hutch setup with ease. I would like to see water drip systems and automatic feed dispensers built into the coop design as well. But GREAT work!
We build all sizes, each to client specs. We advocate for as much space as possible when talking about chicken coops. Especially if you cannot allow the hens to free range for a bit each day. Each client has their own needs and wants. You can use whatever substrate you like, we prefer to use the hemp and not have to clean the hen house so often. The hemp works great! You can also put as many roost bars as you would like but we keep them so the birds are not defecating on each other. We do also sell and install auto feeders and waterers upon the clients request. Some prefer to use their own methods or existing waterer and feeder. Thanks for the compliments!
So I've seen a couple of these videos .... and your coops look really refined. Just 1 question. It seems that having just a single nesting box isn't enough. Will the chickens lay eggs in a spot that all ready has eggs?
Anyone who has chickens will tell you that they all tend to lay in the same nest box. One egg hutch (on most our coops) has 3 nest boxes inside. 5-8 chickens will share one single nest box. Thanks for your comments, we know it's a common misconception.
@@CarolinaCoopsVideos cool. Thanks for the info. Also took me down memory lane 40 some odd years to my grandparents farm. I was scared sh!tless to collect eggs. LOL
I absolutely LOVE this coop!! And...i think your t-shirt rocks!!!! My granddaughter says that all the time and the chicken on it is Awesome Sauce!! LOL Can you please share where you got it? Thanks so much!! Great video and presentation.
The hardware cloth on the inside of the run is nice but cover the edges from the inside with a 1"x2" strip of wood. Your Lab or a large raccoon will be able to push it open. In time those staples holding the hardware cloth will rust & weaken. Also install a door between the run & the coop. Even a simple pull string door will work. Your chickens are your babies, keep them safe.
You are correct in that uncoated wire and weak attachment gives predators a possible point of entry. We have addressed this by using only PVC coated wire and attaching the wire using 1 1/4" stainless steel staples shot in with a pneumatic nailer. For the kit assembled at home, we aren't counting on the homeowner having a pneumatic nailer, so we include furring strips (as you suggest) to cover the edges for extra security. The PVC coated wire and stainless steel staples will not rust and retain their strength for decades. The door between the henhouse and run is unnecessary, provided the exterior predator apron is attached, as the entire coop is predator proof. We take keeping our chicken babies safe seriously!
My hubby line the walls and floors with pvc sheets for easier cleaning. It comes in all colors. Because of the hot Caribbean weather we use 1/2 inch pvc wood to prevent wood rot and termites.
By "PVC wood", do you mean "composite decking"? Thats a great choice but very costly and we would absolutely build with that if requested by our clients. We build to each clients specifications.
I live up on a hill and it gets quite windy, if I hooked the run door onto the hardware cloth I'd be concerned that the door would rattle in the wind and cause damage to the hardware cloth. I'm looking into raising long-tailed ornamental varieties of chickens and I'm curious how you would accommodate for something like that with this design. Since the birds' tails need to be kept up off the ground when roosting to prevent breakage. Would there still be enough room to give 3ft or so under the roost and still give them enough room to get on the roosts?
If in Montana, what about Bears? would they have a heck of a time breakin into this kind of Coup? if that even were a problem, might not be,but could be,considering the terran and being out in a very rural area,as such??? thank you. Im in carolina and from Carolina, love da Carolina Chicken Coups, layout, everything, Very well though out and considerate of Owners and Chickens!! I call my chickens "Cluck Clucks" Ha!
Sometimes a hen will decide the nest is a better place to sleep at night, and it gets really dirty in there. Block them out at night to keep it clean, and then open it during the day for laying their eggs.
I would say if a hen decides to sleep inside the nest box at night something else is wrong. Not to say it doesn't happen. We have seen it in coops that have way to many hens inside the hen house.
This style coop starts at $2995 in a kit or $4700 for panelized. Please feel free toggle us a call if you should have any questions, we can write up an estimate for the perfect coop for you!
Top quality and great design , 3000 is not out of line thats a lot of work , if you have the money why not it will last 20-30 years if not more and looks good in your back yard.. don't work for him , coming from a carpenter myself.. good job
Thank you for the opportunity to point out what you can't see from this video. The entire coop is constructed using wood glue and pocket hole joinery. With this, you get one of the strongest joints possible as the glue seals the end-grain and the diagonal screws go cross-grain and bite into the grain, versus typical home construction where nails are just shot through the end-grain. We also use an exterior rated siding designed for outdoor sheds and buildings such as coops. The henhouse is framed with horizontal and vertical supports, which have a top and bottom plate. These are cleverly hidden for aesthetic purposes, to give the owner the cleanest and prettiest appearance.
I drool with every showing. I would like to know how they decided on where the perfect spot on their land was to place. (My stumbling area) I know I would love to see out my window and close to water - what else am I missing
super nice design and coop all together. Only thing is all the material looks to be non treated nor painted or sealed. Is thing going to last with repeated moisture on it?
Any paint, stain or oil finish. You can be as organic as simply applying an organic cooking oil. Just something to quench the wood so it does not absorb any moisture from rain or snow.
Research local market prices for materials. Cost variables are all over the place from 1 state to another. Thanks for watching! We do not yet offer plans.
Beautiful coop. The construction looks to be better than some home builders. And the thought that went into the design is first class. The only thing I would say is that she is in New York State. No coop is predator proof. Black Bears will go through that wire like we walk through the air.
My only critique would be, what appears to be, the exposed sharp edge of the roofing iron over the nest boxes, that could slice open a child's forehead, when he/she is attempting to collect eggs. - Otherwise its a "state of the art" coop ! Also you could hang those removable doors on hooks just under the apex eaves, above their normal hingeing positions.
We do suggest using and "automotive trim" to cover that if needed but it does not allow water to escape weep out very quickly, which may cause premature deterioration to the roofing material. Thanks for watching!
You mentioned a couple of times a product you use to cover the bottom of the coup with, but I couldn't catch what you said. Can you please tell me what it is that you use? Thanks! Very beautiful and thoughtful coup, and extremely secure.
This is nice but he should have put a door on the coop where the chickens are at night. Otherwise perfect for a 4-6 hens. I wonder what his rec # of chickens for this size.
We do offer a henhouse doors. Automatic and manual. Solar, electric and lockable. We let the client choose which fits their needs best. we do also encourage applying an apron to protect the entire run from burrowing predators therefor not needing a door on the hen house. If you are unable to let the flock free range, we suggest no more than 6 standard sized hens. If you ARE able to let them free-range everyday, the hen house can accommodate up to 12 standard sized hens.
Hi Sue. That's a good question. Only baby snakes can get into our coops through the 1/2 inch hardware cloth and chickens love to eat baby snakes. Thanks for watching!
We don't use any caulk, our HDPE is cut to precision on our CNC machine. You can see if you can source it locally, as it's expensive to ship because of the size of the sheets.
We never recommend cedar shavings for bedding for any animals. It's not good for them to inhale cedar. We love our industrial hemp, or you can use pine shavings.
Shoot us an Emil or give us a call with coop size and options and I will run a freight estimate for you and we can also give you a price on Team Carolina Coops flying there to install for you! The standard coops are simple to assemble but we travel all over installing custom coops! carolinacoops.com Thanks for watching!

WOW BEAUTIFUL coop! well done!
Thank You!

We are so sorry for your loss
Here is how to design a coop that keeps your chickens warm in even the coldest of climates: ChickenCoop. info
How much does something like that cost material + installation?
I live in Long Island New York.
need a way to block the nesting boxes from inside too. but wow what a beautiful coop great job
+Major Greenz Why would you have a need to block the nesting boxes from the inside?
Should have a door to the nesting boxes because your first line of defense will always be breached at some point in time.
thank you
Sometimes a hen will decide the nest is a better place to sleep at night, and it gets really dirty in there. Block them out at night to keep it clean, and then open it during the day for laying their eggs.
I would say if a hen decides to sleep inside the nest box at night something else is wrong. Not to say it doesn't happen. We have seen it in coops that have way to many hens inside the hen house.
Great job 👏
Awesome design... I'd live to have this how much for this particular model?

The client requested it be left natural, she wanted to finish it herself.
What sort of finish would be good for wet climate and safe for the birds?
Any paint, stain or oil finish. You can be as organic as simply applying an organic cooking oil. Just something to quench the wood so it does not absorb any moisture from rain or snow.
The cinder blocks make this look anything but custom.
Nice Job!👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
Thank You! Thanks for watching!
Nice coop. Why not level the ground for her?
Its 3am, I work at 9. What am I doing with my life.
I know, right. Same.
Learning about chicken coops I guess, it is a cool set up! Happy Easter
You have a job and aren't causing any trouble. You're a model citizen who happens to be a little tired. That's what you're doing with your life.
You are gaining potential life saving information.
The irony of a statement made 2 years ago.
Are you referring to the chicken opening on the front henhouse wall?
Really nice coop i love it
Thank you
awsome coop i have ever seen
Thank you!
Very nice! what would a coop like this cost to build? Rough estimate material.
And do you sell plans?
Research local market prices for materials. Cost variables are all over the place from 1 state to another.
Thanks for watching! We do not yet offer plans.
Holy crap!! That’s where I grew up!!
Just happened to click the video
Wow

How many chickens can go into this?
Beautiful coop. The construction looks to be better than some home builders. And the thought that went into the design is first class. The only thing I would say is that she is in New York State. No coop is predator proof. Black Bears will go through that wire like we walk through the air.
I did not understand what you use for composting? "Hemp" pine? Just starting out
In this video we are using industrial hemp. You can also use pine shavings.
Would you come to the UK to build this for me?
My only critique would be, what appears to be, the exposed sharp edge of the roofing iron over the nest boxes, that could slice open a child's forehead, when he/she is attempting to collect eggs. - Otherwise its a "state of the art" coop ! Also you could hang those removable doors on hooks just under the apex eaves, above their normal hingeing positions.
We do suggest using and "automotive trim" to cover that if needed but it does not allow water to escape weep out very quickly, which may cause premature deterioration to the roofing material.
Thanks for watching!
Hi, great Coop. Do you have the design plan for this so I can follow and build?
kind of tacky isn't it, he sells them for a living.

Very good idea thank u
Would You Guys come all the way to Louisiana to build a coop for my Peacock and his harem of hens
Pimp C Murrda I’m in Baton Rouge next week building a custom coop. So yes we go everywhere and we love peacocks.
What size/width lumber do you use for your roosting bars?
If you for the Carolina coop tha10 by 30 feet long...he said he used scraps of 2 x4s I think he said
You mentioned a couple of times a product you use to cover the bottom of the coup with, but I couldn't catch what you said. Can you please tell me what it is that you use? Thanks! Very beautiful and thoughtful coup, and extremely secure.
Gayle Lucas industrial hemp. We sell it everyday at carolinacoops.com
Gayle Lucas thank you for your compliments and watching!
You are what you eat/ate meaning that you don't want your chickens eating friggin pizza lol
it would be nice to add a spring to the run door
what about snakes ?would they still get in to your coop
Hi Sue. That's a good question. Only baby snakes can get into our coops through the 1/2 inch hardware cloth and chickens love to eat baby snakes. Thanks for watching!
Wow very creative and interesting! You just earned a Sub and a Like😀

Loved it the best coop 😍
Thank you.

Do you sell plans for building chicken coops?
We don't currently sell our plans.
Where can I get the high density polyethylene sheets? And do u caulk the seam with anything?
We don't use any caulk, our HDPE is cut to precision on our CNC machine. You can see if you can source it locally, as it's expensive to ship because of the size of the sheets.
What’s the recommendation for bedding ? Using the deep litter? You said pine/cedar shavings were expensive .......
We never recommend cedar shavings for bedding for any animals. It's not good for them to inhale cedar. We love our industrial hemp, or you can use pine shavings.
Wow! Very 👍 nice!
Thank you and Thanks for watching!
HOW MUCH IS THIS COOP?
My chickens are too fat and clumsy to ever go up that ramp lol
😂😂😂😂
You would be surprised! Lol
How many chickens would a coop this size hold?
How much does one like this COST??
does this have to be painted for protection?
We recommend painting or staining the coop to preserve them from the weather since it's not pressure treated (except for the base)
How can I get one of these in Australia? Love it.
Shoot us an Emil or give us a call with coop size and options and I will run a freight estimate for you and we can also give you a price on Team Carolina Coops flying there to install for you! The standard coops are simple to assemble but we travel all over installing custom coops!
