    Great review of CanOpener. Also, nice, honest walk-thru of your workflow. As a Cubase user, I learned a lot in just this one video.

    Shouldn’t have watched this: it seems to completely solve the phantom center issue I have with all headphones. Now I have to have it haha. That’s really my biggest issue mixing with headphones. The imaging is so different from speakers. I love that Goodhertz kept it simple. It really tackles that one issue incredibly well while providing some other intuitive tools :)

    Very nice song.....you have a new listener on Spotify! Thanks John. So basically can opener sits in the 2 bus as the last in the chain?

    • @JohnMarshall-NI
      @JohnMarshall-NI  28 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@specialbeat cheers! You can add it to the 2 bus, but if you have the option of a control room in your DAW, and can create a dedicated headphone output for it, definitely use that so you don’t mix down with it enabled accidentally!

    Thank you so much!! I have the m50x and was not able to find a setting that simulated natural speakers with sonarworks. They still sounded only a little open with canopener with the mix engineer presets. The more air preset solves this problem 🙌🙌

      Thank you. I really appreciate you saying that. I have been considering starting a Patreon and offering people the unmixed tracks of a song for download every month, so that people could practise mixing or remix my music. Maybe do mixing competitions with prizes for Patreon subscribers if companies would be willing to donate NFR licenses.
      I’d be interested in your feedback on whether you think this could be a good idea.

      @@JohnMarshall-NI Nice to meet you John. I've used that same writing approach in the past . The use of the contrapuntal as well as the non resolving , may not put as many bums on seats as the 1,4,5 , headbangers, it still has to be done. Keep it up mate. Love it. ......Oh right Canopener ! Nearly forgot haha.

    It sounds definitely different even with speakers. I can hear the sound in the middle becomes fat. So, I'm wondering if it is ok leaving it on the master bus when I mixdown for mastering. Or should I remove it when I mixdown?

    • @JohnMarshall-NI
      @JohnMarshall-NI  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Definitely disable it when you are doing a mixdown.
      It is only there to help you get a better mix, so that your mixes will translate better to other speakers and devices.

      @@teeaymusik9811 What Canopener preset?

  • @thetylersherman
    @thetylersherman 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    In terms of accurate representation across multiple listening devices, do you think flattening with Sonarworks and then using Mixing Engineer (flat) would be the safest setting? More Air sounds great in this context, I agree, but not necessarily sure how that would translate with other listening situations if you were to use it as your virtual "mixing space".

    • @JohnMarshall-NI
      @JohnMarshall-NI  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I kind of treat the different presets as different listening spaces.
      What works well will depend a lot on familiarity.
      I have been using the Slate VSX HD linear 2 profile, with a variety of Canopener presets, but the ones I like the best are 'music before the 70s' and 'life like'. I still like 'more air' for hearing how the high frequencies translate though.
      Extremely flat can be pretty dull to listen to, so I encourage you to find what works best for you and not necessarily force yourself to mix within a certain context that might not benefit you.

      @@JohnMarshall-NI I suppose what matters most is that it translates well in a number of environments so that makes sense! Appreciate the insight.

    We gotta put can opener in master Channel? To get result in all of track?

    • @JohnMarshall-NI
      @JohnMarshall-NI  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You would want to have it last on the master channel, yes, but before you export your track you will need to remember to bypass it.
      Or, you can put it on a control room output for your headphones if your DAW supports that.

    • @JohnMarshall-NI
      @JohnMarshall-NI  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      What headphones are you listening on? CanOpener affects the crosstalk between the left and right channels and has the effect of stereo widening. There is also the EQ component.
      It is not as dramatic as say, Slate VSX or dSoniq Realphones, which use crosstalk, but also have speaker and room simulations. You should still be able to hear the difference on a good set of headphones.

    • @michaelknight141
      @michaelknight141 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JohnMarshall-NI I use Focal Spirit Pro Headphones on an Apogee Duet. I realised it has a more audible effect when I listen to an instrument that ist panned hard left or right. There I can clearly hear the effect moving from the one side a little bit towards the middle. I best hear it when its only one instrument. In a mix like this video I can barely hear any difference. Maybe my ears need to get used to it

    • @JohnMarshall-NI
      @JohnMarshall-NI  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michaelknight141 a lot of these types of spacial effects for headphones can take some time to get used to, for sure.~
      If you are trying out CanOpener, the presets are good starting points and are quite varied in how they sound.

    Interesting thank you, do you disable can opener and sonarworks when exporting or sonarworks only?

    • @JohnMarshall-NI
      @JohnMarshall-NI  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In Cubase Pro there is a feature called 'control room' where you can place inserts for monitoring purposes. You can set up an output for your speakers and another for your headphones, with different processing on each.
      There is no need to disable anything on the control room inserts, as they are post master fader.
      There are similar features on other DAWs, but not all have this, so you would need to disable any processing like this if it is on your master bus inserts.
