Super helpful, think I asked this question before I read your book! But definitely now that i hear you say it, my old message sounded pretty vague. I’ve narrowed it down to “I’m a brand strategist that helps real estate agents attract better clients” - and then conversational version: “I help real estate agents look good so they can attract better clients.” Still getting the hang of this but it’s already given me so much clarity when talking to people.
That's a solid XY Positioning Statement! I think you could even go one level deeper by explicitly segmenting between commercial and residential real estate agents. Well done!
This was so helpful. I think this video may have given me the breakthrough I needed to prepare my introduction for a networking event I'm attending tomorrow. Thank you, John!
Great to hear!
What I learned from as a grade school teacher is simplify a message but not to dumb it down. The problem with your neighbor's answer is that it left out the why, making him sound like a construction worker. That he "digs holes to look for cool old things" is sure to start more conversations, whereas his answer comes across as a bit trite.
The way I do this is to write out the 5Ws in a large paragraph, and keep rewriting until I can fit the statement into about two lines.
I really like your xyps method though, really nice way to verbalize it. 👍
Fair point. In this case, he was talking to a 6yo, so... I'll cut him some slack :)
breakthrough moment achieved for me too. Finally found a way to introduce digitial solutions in a way that a 6 year old could understand. Thanks bro
Thanks! This is really helpful.
This is something that I often struggle with. It's all too easy to say "I'm a Graphic Designer" but that doesn't set me apart from all the other Graphic Designers at whatever event I am attending. Something like "I help people visualise their ideas" may work better for me as it can then be followed up with a greater in-depth answer about Graphic Design/Illustration and any other services I offer.
As always, awesome video! Thanks
I think you answered your own question. Combine the two things: you're a graphic designer who helps people to visualize their ideas. 🤓
Maybe something like, "I'm the guy to call when you have an idea you can't get out of your head"?
@@TheJonathanStarkShow That's a great response, thanks! I will give it a try during my next networking event! :)
Thank you for this comment!
Great advice! Start somewhat vague, but be specific enough for an Everyman to understand.
I LOVE THIS!!! As a mobile notary public I’m going to work on my response. Thanks! for this😊
I’m going to a network event today in your answer helped me out so much I can’t wait to try it

@0:20 - These approaches over the phone resonating with people - which previous video was that (link)? :)
Hmm so I want to say "I work in accounting/finance". But maybe the conversational way could be "I help businesses get a picture of their operations health" ? Idk seems like a work in progress.
