Owen Jones meets Anna Soubry | 'I'll never forgive Boris Johnson'

  • I went to meet Conservative MP and remain supporter Anna Soubry to talk about Brexit and its effect on Britain. She says she will never forgive Boris Johnson for his role in the leave campaign because she thinks he ‘didn’t believe in Brexit’ and that he did it for his ‘own personal advancement’. She also reveals that during the campaign she was told by David Cameron's Number 10 not to debate immigration on the day the figures came out.
    We also discussed her views on Jeremy Corbyn's Labour party, whether the Tories are becoming 'Ukip-lite' as Nigel Farage claims and Donald Trump's proposed state visit to Britain.

    • @guydavies3035
      @guydavies3035 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ian C you are not wrong. But it is irrelevant now. For decades many farmers have relied upon foreign labour to undertake manual seasonal work. If that pool of labour is cut off, then the crops will rot in the ground. There used to be a tradition of labour moving out of the cities to harvest hops in Kent (for example), it was a working holiday. Those traditions have long since gone. Farming will be damaged beyond recognition. Farmers will attempt to grow things that make money, as they always have done, but that will not be labour intensive crops, unlikely to be lamb, beef or diary if we lose the EU market, and only produce for the home market. I can’t see how many farmers could harvest wheat or barley and trade them at world prices. UK farming has been shaped by the EU and the Common Agricultural Policy, rightly or wrongly for decades and it would take decades to properly change that. My concern is that idiots like Gove will try to change this overnight, and I am sure we will see the suicide rate in the agricultural sector (already worryingly high) will soar.

    @Theexsquaddie. 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Let me just preface this comment by saying I don't like Owen Jones and his general political stance and I feel very much the same about Nigel Farage.
    I voted for Brexit because I'm of the belief that the EU is a failed communist ideal that I want no part of. The issue of immigration isn't one based on racism but one of economic sustainability. If you keep letting people come into your house it doesn't take long before you can't cope and it becomes uncomfortable to live. Things like sleeping arrangements, washing and laundry, cooking and cleaning become difficult. Then when you can't sit down in your own house it's easy to blame the people who have come in. It is of course the fault of the people who let them in. The solution is either to move some people out or build an extension. The first seems simple but doesn't solve the problem. The second does solve the problem but takes vast amounts of time and money. This is only a temporary solution if you continue to let people in, you will need to build another extension.
    Put this problem on a national level and it's easy to see the problem isn't immigration it's the rate of immigration and it's the fault of the people who let them in. This is why we need to end FREE movement of people NOT movement of people. WE CANNOT DO THIS WHILE SIGNED UPTO ANY PART OF THE EU. Free movement of people will always be a part of any deal and it's not sustainable at it's current levels and will cause bad feeling. Free movement of people also puts huge strain on our infrastructure.

    Who's going to pick the vegetables? Change the UK unemployment culture. Unemployment benefit is a lifeline not a lifestyle. Offer the work instead of the dole.
    There are 1.4 million unemployed people in the UK. Give them the opportunity to support themselves and their families and regain their will to work and their self respect and for those who've never worked some experience of at least doing something more than just heading down to the dole office once a month. Make farmers offer a living wage for the work and set reasonable standards for supermarket produce that doesn't allow them to reject perfectly acceptable fruit and veg simply because it's not totally blemish free and of inconsistent size. In the past people would go to the country in different seasons and pick what's needed. It's not some ghastly throwback to a peasant life, it's work.

      @ Hannah Tay 'Most people' means most people, whether they are educated or not. The economic outcome of Brexit is an immensely complicated issue; so much so, that different economists who have dedicated their lives to the subject have differing views. And that's just the economic impact. We then have the different (but related) _social_ implications. These, of course, are something the economists are perhaps no longer expert upon (with good reason) and therefore we perhaps have to look to a different set of experts for their forecasts on those.
      So how are these decisions _supposed_ to be made? By a *representative* democracy (as distinct from a *referendum* democracy). Politicians don't understand these issues any better than the rest of us. What they _do_ have though is ready access to a plethora of expert civil servants who advise them on the various subjects.
      We vote for people not because we have any confidence in their expertise in some particular issue. We vote for them because we assume (or hope) that they will take advice from experts on the best course of action _on our behalf._ If they don't, we vote them out again in four years time.
      I consider myself a reasonably intelligent person, but I certainly did not want to be given a vote on Brexit, (a) because I didn't know the first thing about it and (b) because I quickly realised that to understand it enough to make anything like an informed decision on it would take years and years of dedicated study.

    Having watched and heard this video, l am of the conclusion that Anna Soubry is totally confused, she contradicted herself several times, she slagged Trump off then proceeded to give him praise. She went on about work ethics claiming the immigrates that come to this country do all the work, that there are more British people out of work and signing on, because it seems these people won't do the work the immigrants do, this is both insulting and degrading to all those people signing on, who have spent many hours looking for work that does not appear to be out there, she also claims that mass immigration isn't happening, that the crime rates have gone up since the 2016 vote to leave took place. I conclude by saying to Anna Soubry one thing, get out there and take a long hard look at the real world, see the problems for yourself instead of sitting in your little bubble of Fantasy and Fairy tales....

On the 29th of March that right and understanding is gone and only MP's votes count. She's over the top in her talk of freedom of speech going because she hasn't had a debate on the single market is outstandingly idiotic.
    Also her lack of faith in the British people when it comes to working, she believes if immigrants don't do the hard jobs no one will.
    If a market of work is out of staff and no immigrants are hear to take it (hypothetically) believe me, British people will do it, and they will have to give better wages as well instead of mass influx of immigration driving down the wage gap, killing the middle class family and making a housing crisis.

      Britain was the most successful economy in the world in the 1890s but went into the relative economic decline from the 1900s onwards as the USA and Germany caught up and overtook us. We had a massive empire. But, by the 1970s we were one of the least successful major economies: we had rested on our past wealth. Under Thatcher we improved for a while but, per capita,we are still one of the least successful of the major economies in terms of productivity, export performance and in terms of patents for new inventions. It has nothing to do with the EU and by leaving we are just shooting ourselves in the head.

As a remain voter i'm disgusted by the undercurrent of this discussion, the picture they paint of the working classes is appalling and does nothing but perpetuate this picture of what leave voters look like and then she sits there and talks about tolerance and stereotyping.

    Why is it that no one is prepared to point out to the anti immigrant brigade that one reason that we have so many foreigners harvesting crops, is that we changed the law to make it hard for Gypsies to do that job. We also allowed the sale of village houses as holiday homes, which reduced the number of local people to do the job. Then we cut rural bus services so that people could not move out from the towns to work in the fields. There were other changes that we inflicted on our local work force, but in the end the only people who could do the job were those who were prepared to live in cheap hostel accommodation in a group so that gang masters could collect them easily to bus them all over the country at little cost. What better than foreign gap year students and their friends?
