Seeing you do CoQ is a dream come true and as someone with 500+ hrs in the game it's so refreshingly fun seeing you explore the early game very carefully. Love the drawings so far, Aecius running away from the snapjaws was especially great. Don't want to spoil anything for you as you are going in blind but here's some helpful buttons that should help a bit with navigation: - You might have figured it out already but "numpad -" let's you go out to the worldmap (if you're outside on the ground) and "numpad +" let's you enter a tile (or Parasang as it's called in-game) from the worldmap. They are also used to navigate to stairs leading up or down when you're in a dungeon. - If you press "Backspace" you should see a list of all friendly entities in the zone. Really helpful when trying to find a quest-giver in a village since the npc's move around a lot on their Parasang. - "Numpad 7" and "Numpad 9" lets you switch between the different menus (Skills, Character, Journal, Inventory, Equipment etc.) - Pressing left (or "Numpad 4" on the equipment screen will unequip whatever item you have selected, saves you from opening the item-menu everytime. - CoQ has a great hotkey-system, press A to open the Ability-menu, setting these up is not needed in the beginning but as you get more skills it's highly recommended.
Would really love to see a playthrough of qud from you. It doesn't need to be super consistent but seeing you learn new things while trying to draw them in the best way you can imagine them is cool.
Major control tips without spoilers: - CTRL + Space will let you interact with nearby terrain or items, which lets you pick stuff up without standing on top of it. - CTRL + a direction will allow you to attack in a given direction. This will let you attack enemies without worrying about accidentally moving or target terrain/objects if you want. - Holding down ALT will erase most terrain from the screen and display interactable objects and characters. Characters will be colored based on whether they are hostile or not when you do this, so it's great to quickly gain your bearings in densely-populated screens.
1. QoC loves florid descriptions and won't use one word when three will do 2. There's "constant" lore and "randomized" lore across games 3. Don't feel bad about mugging kobo- I mean snapjaws 4. The MS paint drawings are very cute and charming
@@kruggsmash I'm enjoying this look at it from a new player's perspective a lot. :) Honestly I think that Qud is really good at making the sort of emergent stories that your DF videos center around, but on a smaller scale. I'd love to see lots of stuff in that style with Qud, whether it's you or not!
The two most important controls you need to know about as a new player are backspace to bring up a list of all important NPCs on the current screen, important for finding quest givers, and numpad 0 to autoexplore the map so you can find those npcs
IM so glad you're playing this game, its one of my favorite roguelikes, the writing and world building(as well as the gameplay) are just perfect. Live and drink friend.
Honestly the best hint i think would be to just read through all the controls, for example using the minus key to trvael through the map is absolutely essential
Just recently started playing this myself. The new player struggle not to accumulate corpses and wield them as weapons is real! I loved to see it illustrated. The baboons of the desert canyons seem more civilised than those of the waterfarms. I have lost more characters to baboons than anything else, but my characters have murdered plenty of them back so we have a cute little inter-generational cycle of revenge going now.
CoQ is one of the most dreamlike and consuming games I've ever played, and one of - if not my favorite. This is an absolute delight seeing you give this a go.
@@kruggsmash I'm always amazed how good in drawing you are. Regular style is the king of all, but it's super cool to see something different from time to time! Path of Achra artworks were jawdropping, it looks just like the artstyle from the original game! You're like a shapeshifter
An Important note! In the starting village, if you look around carefully, there will always be a "Dromad Trader". They sell bullets (very cheaply too!), among other things. Essential for starting out.
YESS!! So happy to see you playing Qud. It may be overwhelming at first but if you're smart enough to know Dwarf Fortress in and out you're smart enough to learn Caves of Qud. I so hope you stick with it, would love to watch your character's journeys!

Live and drink, wanderer! A few tips for a budding Moon King: learning cooking skills can bring you new strength from the many odd ingredients of the land you find yourself in.
Cooking skills, eh? I still don't understand (at all) how I went abotu cooking that meal I ate in the episode. I just went to prepare a meal and it gathered some seemingly random items out of the air and made a meal out of them? I can do that whenever I want I guess? Seems odd.
@@kruggsmash You can always find SOMETHING to fill your belly in Qud, but learning to cook will let you make much more nourishing meals at camp out of ingredients you find or have, such as your food cubes.
for what it's worth, when it comes to digital scribbles I find that Paint Dot Net is basically MSpaint but with some really crucial/helpful small features like layers added
Krugg, Pro-tip for your inevitable character recreation. The starter village is an excellent place to get some freebie skills, if you water deal with the residents you can get sufficient rep. such that you can "buy" a free skill from them. Sometimes, if you get lucky you can acquire a companion that way. Though you've got to be rather careful, water-deals are taken real seriously and companions gained that way especially so. If they die, it's assumed to be your fault somehow, and you take a massive rep hit. Also, numpad is your friend! The "+" and "-" keys go up/down floors, and when you're on the surface they bring up the overworld map.
Noooo Aecius won't diiie. This is the one character that will get through the game 1000%. guarantee it. I love him, you see. But yes, thanks for the tips. I will have to have a look into them. I had NO idea what that water ritual was even doing when I talked to that flower warden thing lol.
@@kruggsmash The water ritual is a way to make friends and enemies; learn secrets; and gain skills from certain people like village leaders! You trade your reputation like a currency using the water ritual as the primary way. It's like the Qud equivalent of having coffee except mushrooms might go to war with you if you have too many cups with the wrong people; that's why it tells you who loves or hates which individual.
I laughed way too hard than I should when you didn't realize that "pony up 25 drams of water" means she will offer you 25 drams in return. People use water to trade. It's money. She was offering you cost of your items in money!
@@kruggsmash Pro tip: water is heavy, trade it for "trade goods" when you can, that's stuff like gems and ingots of metal. Trade goods are exchanged at the same price you buy them for always so they're a store of value.
@@uponeric36 You trade the currency away because trade goods have fixed prices and are a better store of value. Somewhere out there an economist just had an aneurism. 😆

Yeah! I dunno, I kinda thought the game felt like a sort of wonky pixel vibe sorta thing. Worked out well despite the style being a bit different than my usual drawings, eh? Thanks for watching!
That blood was from the snapjaw - you pretty much gibbed them with your blow! Also, all liquids can be gathered (in an appropriate container) and many have uses (ie salt water in a meal if you learn to cook) If you do learn to cook, you can dictate ingredients vs just using random bits of equimax and slime - usually provides a buff for the day. Check out the oven on the right side of town - there should be an Apple Metz in it and if you're friendly enough with the villagers they may teach you how to make it.
Hey Kruggs fellow water sib! Here's a tip or two. Use the numpad to play, it's the way to go. If you don't have a numpad, treat yourself! There's an auto explore (red compass looking thing in the top right of the UI) , but don't panic it will point out any areas of interest, or threats. Once you've finished rushing about, hit the backspace key and it will show you who's who, and what's what. Also there's a world map, hit - (minus) key on your numpad. Really looking forward to this series man, I hope you love this game as much as I do. Live and drink fellow wanderer.
Oh wonderful, I'm so happy to see you play my favorite game! Sorry it's a bit overwhelming at first, but you're doing well. I'm really glad you're having fun, too! When in doubt don't forget the old Qud wisdom: If it sucks, hit the bricks!
Great to see you playing this absolute masterpiece. For me it was the same in the beginning "playing a little: dead", "playing a little: dead" then I took a rather long break, came across Cataclysm DDA and somehow got the hang of it. Then went back to CoQ and they had added alot of content and quality of life stuff and then I really started to understand it, had countless characters. Right now Iam playing a cannibalistic birdman with four arms who mainly uses guns and axes, level 20, have fought countless enemies, found countless cool and useful items but haven't even seen half of it. Absolute genius game, and the artstyle is exactly in the right spot, where it's somewhat stylish and creates and atmosphere, while leaving plenty of room to inspire your own imagination.
I played way back in the day, when the game was still $10. It used to be that you walk next to the wrong plant, it grabs you, and strangles you to death. Nowadays those plants are weak af even early game but I still have the trauma whenever I see them. My new early game fear is opening a door and seeing - I'll let Krugg find out in case he reads this.
I love this game but frequently find myself overwhelmed as well. Watching a series like this a such a great way to get both my Krugg and Qud fixes at once!
I could listen to you playing this all day long. I love this game and you give it another layer of greatness with your storytelling! It's so much fun to see you finding things out on your own. That's half of the fun in Qud. 😊 Hope to see a lot of this from here on. 😀

Also if you need to find a questline to do over the following videos, i'd recomend having a look around the ruins of Joppa (it's two tiles below the Red Rock cave if you open the map). I want to give more tips, but I also feel like you wanna discover the game for yourself, so better leave it at that.

- You might have figured it out already but "numpad -" let's you go out to the worldmap (if you're outside on the ground) and "numpad +" let's you enter a tile (or Parasang as it's called in-game) from the worldmap. They are also used to navigate to stairs leading up or down when you're in a dungeon.
- If you press "Backspace" you should see a list of all friendly entities in the zone. Really helpful when trying to find a quest-giver in a village since the npc's move around a lot on their Parasang.
- "Numpad 7" and "Numpad 9" lets you switch between the different menus (Skills, Character, Journal, Inventory, Equipment etc.)
- Pressing left (or "Numpad 4" on the equipment screen will unequip whatever item you have selected, saves you from opening the item-menu everytime.
Major control tips without spoilers:
- CTRL + Space will let you interact with nearby terrain or items, which lets you pick stuff up without standing on top of it.
1. QoC loves florid descriptions and won't use one word when three will do
2. There's "constant" lore and "randomized" lore across games
3. Don't feel bad about mugging kobo- I mean snapjaws
4. The MS paint drawings are very cute and charming
KRUGGSMASH DOING QUD AAAA... legitimately one of my favorite games and worlds of all time I have never clicked a youtube notification faster
Haha hope I do it justice. I don't know what the hell i'm doing so far!
I absolutely love how you draw the snapjaws! Too cute
Oh yeah, I meant to check that out. Will have to do it next time, eh? thanks for the tip!
So happy that you are giving this game a try.
It's such a rich world building simulator.
I steal sooooo much from this game for my rpg settings.
I really love those style experiments from different games! Oh man, Kruggsmash is a real jack of all trades!
I like changing my style. It can be so refreshing. I hope you like this!
"In this world, poverty isn't begging on the streets, poverty is dying of thirst."
Qud is a world like precious few others.
*Kruggsmash story telling with home drawn art made by the whole family.*
This mood boost is right what I needed this Thursday.
Thanks, have fun.
YESS!! So happy to see you playing Qud. It may be overwhelming at first but if you're smart enough to know Dwarf Fortress in and out you're smart enough to learn Caves of Qud. I so hope you stick with it, would love to watch your character's journeys!
I'd like to add that the setting is fairly similar to that of "The Long Night" mod for Dwarf Fortress.
I'm tuning in from a long hiatus of watching you're content Krugg, and man, I can see evolution in everything from your art-style to your quality. You've always been a high quality creator, but this stuff is getting ridiculous! The fact you're maintaining your upload schedule and still at the level of quality you put things out is nothing short of amazing. Thanks for the great videos!
Watching Krugg fumble around is quite amusing, since he feels about this game the same way about Dwarf fortress. Confused and overwhelmed
Super duper overwhalming lol. I love it
Seeing you play this game is a dream come true, it deserves a lot more attention. This is amazing
Oh this is amazing, I'm so glad you're Qudding it up
Your animations and voiceovers are delightful.
I love the way you've storyfied this early-game meander!! Looking forward to the next one
for what it's worth, when it comes to digital scribbles I find that Paint Dot Net is basically MSpaint but with some really crucial/helpful small features like layers added
I can't believe you do the art on top of everything else!
I love the detail upside-down shield. The facial expressions are perfect!
as much as I love your dwarf fortress videos, it's always nice to see you tackle other great games too
top notch content as always !
Hell yeah. Thinking it's about time I branch out a little more these days, eh? So many possibilities out there!
Thank you for playing this game. I love how the story is slowly evolving out of the gameplay. That is the magic of this channel to me. ❤
Krugg,
Pro-tip for your inevitable character recreation.
This is by far the best way to watch someone else play Qud, savoring every ounce of the world. Please make more!!
Always a good morning to see a Kruggsmash upload
Thanks for watching! Good to have you here. Good morn as well :)
Krugg, the voice overs with with the spot on distortion.
Absolutely phenomenal.
Man I thoroughly loved the art in this video, you did a really good job with it Krugg!!
Glad to hear it! It makes it easier to do a lot of pictures and animate them sometimes too. I like mspaint :)
Love Krugg, love Qud. Really digging the art style! Hope Aecius survives the Snapjaw camp, but losing is fun too.
Also the travel function is worth looking into.
Haha. Aecius is terrified of this place...
Didn't think I'd spend my morning watching someone else play with their CoQ, yet here we are...
Surpriiise! Thanks for watching, you bearded bastard.
I laughed way too hard than I should when you didn't realize that "pony up 25 drams of water" means she will offer you 25 drams in return. People use water to trade. It's money. She was offering you cost of your items in money!
Haha, "I don't need no stinking water, idiot."
Yeaaah I guess I get it now lol
@@kruggsmash Pro tip: water is heavy, trade it for "trade goods" when you can, that's stuff like gems and ingots of metal. Trade goods are exchanged at the same price you buy them for always so they're a store of value.
@@uponeric36 You trade the currency away because trade goods have fixed prices and are a better store of value. Somewhere out there an economist just had an aneurism. 😆
@@harbl99 Turns out the economy is different when the value of currency is not being enforced and manipulated by an oligarchy! Tbf though, it also doesn't simulate markets or anything.
Really, really fun! I love the new art style. Feels like this game lends itself well to the way you punch up and embellish even the most mundane things.
Yeah! I dunno, I kinda thought the game felt like a sort of wonky pixel vibe sorta thing. Worked out well despite the style being a bit different than my usual drawings, eh?
Thanks for watching!
Please more of this! I love the way you go through it with such detail and relish in how weird everything is to a newcomer.
loving this character, not so smart but can look after themselves
Hell yeah. Pretty relatable I say
Pressing F1 in game will give some tips for Qud. Live and drink wanderer.
Oooooh. aight. thanks for the tip. Will have to give it a try next time.
Just to keep tips consolidated: The number pad on your keyboard has your best navigation controls.
Oh man CoQ, so good!! Im very excited to see where this series goes!
I'm excited too. This seems like it'll be a good ol' time
That blood was from the snapjaw - you pretty much gibbed them with your blow!
Oh siiick! Could I have gathered the blood? That'd be metal.
Live and drink, starseeker. So glad you have decided to plumb the insane, convoluted, layered world of Qud.
Yes! I have this game and I died so hard so many times. It's a beautiful work of art for people far more skilled than I am. Thanks for showcasing it!
Well aecius ain't gonna die. ain't no way. i love him too much.
Glad you liked this so far!
I have been PRAYING, HOPING, SACRIFICING for this moment. Time to enter the Caves of Krugg!
Oh wonderful, I'm so happy to see you play my favorite game! Sorry it's a bit overwhelming at first, but you're doing well. I'm really glad you're having fun, too! When in doubt don't forget the old Qud wisdom: If it sucks, hit the bricks!
Oh and hit f1 next time you play for gameplay info! Live and drink!
Amazing, I was just thinking the other day - "man I think Kruggs could make a great video with Caves of Qud" - and here it is.
Engraved items tend to have bits of stories/information drawn on them, if you take the time to look
Some of them can also provide quests.
Pretty sure I was beaten to death by baboons like 10 times before I had a character that lasted over an hour.
Lol same, and eaten by a fair number of bears too.
God, this games cool.
Got so excited when I saw the Caves of Qud upload! Been wanting to play this for a long time.
Thank you Krugg.. I watch everything you put out, but this is something special.
Please play more Caves of Qud. It's such a rich and intriguing world and I hope this gets more people to dive in!
This game looks so fun, like a combination of classic Fallout and Dwarf Fortress adventure mode. Also, I love the artstyle you used in this video!
Yeah! Give it a try sometime. It really seems to have a lot to offer!
Holy shnikies, this is the greatest combo of content creator and content of all time.
I love this game but frequently find myself overwhelmed as well. Watching a series like this a such a great way to get both my Krugg and Qud fixes at once!
Suuper overwhelming lol. The game feels like I stepped into the middle of an imaginative DM's worldbuilding infodump lol
I could listen to you playing this all day long. I love this game and you give it another layer of greatness with your storytelling! It's so much fun to see you finding things out on your own. That's half of the fun in Qud. 😊
Hope to see a lot of this from here on. 😀
I would absolutely adore to see you explore more of this game.
Me too! Here's hopign I don't die too soon lol
@@kruggsmash Also! It was absolutely killing me, but, while you CAN travel all the way to Six Day Stilt the way you're trying to, you can also access the world map and travel that way, which will save you, like, hours of time.
@@viscera_atrocity it might be pretty interesting to see the travelogue of someone who traveled on foot the 60+ zone screens that it takes to get to the stilt
Remember Krugg. This isn't an environment this is a society. And everyone talks. Be weary of who you make you friend or enemy. (Also I think you made a good choice becoming water brothers with that plant)
You can only play a game blind once. It may not be for everyone but I cherish that first experience.
Hey Krugg. Fun hint for you. Faction rep is also currency, and you can use that water ritual (it'll sometimes be other liquids for other kinds of beings) to trade your rep away for secrets or even skills.
18:09 This is now a canon image of the Apple farmer's daughter.
This is all I could ever wish for and more, thanks for making amazing videos Krugg!
Hey hell yeah! Glad you liked it, Polar!
I hope caves of Qud gives you a shout out because I'm probably going to get this game now.
Thanks again for a wonderful video!!! You rock Krugg!!
Haha, hey good luck with it! Lemme know if you find out anything that could be helpful, eh?
Thanks for watching!
Awesome, I think this will be a great series. I can't wait to see your illistrations of some of the weirder things you encounter. Also, beware sleeping things.
Ahhhh the menu music. Also describing qud by saying you died quickly several times back to back checks out lol. Great game though and happy to see a video of it
I’ve been wanting some Qud art from Krugg for a hot minute. Love the video man!
So glad you giving CoQ a try! It's the only game that comes close with DF into being my favorite game and it's really worth it once you start getting your way around it.
Since you're going to the Six Day Stilt, I would really advice to avoid the jungles (also the canyons and mountains, since it's really easy to become lost in there). Also if you need to find a questline to do over the following videos, i'd recomend having a look around the ruins of Joppa (it's two tiles below the Red Rock cave if you open the map). I want to give more tips, but I also feel like you wanna discover the game for yourself, so better leave it at that.
Hell yeah. It certainly seems like Qud has a lot to offer, eh? I think i'm gonna work pretty well with it as we go forward :)
Hrmm, yeah I got a few folks mentioning that I should prooobaly stick around teh beginning area for a bit. I think Aecius might be gettgin a little scared of heading out into teh wilds so quickly lol
