  • This flight marked the end of my little vacation in Helsinki. And to tell the truth, I chose Helsinki especially to take Finnair's brand new Airbus A350 XWB in Business Class, even if Helsinki is a really beautiful city. What a gorgeous airplane!

    I know nothing about aero engines, but how are they able to make them so much more efficient now than those from 10, 20, 30 years ago?

    • @TheFlyingFrenchmanHD
      @TheFlyingFrenchmanHD  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a good question, I don't have enough of the appropriate knowledge to precisely answer it. I hope someone will read your comment and answer. I'm also interested in the technical details.
      I know that one of the ways to increase the efficiency and reduce the fuel consumption consists in increasing the bypass rate. There are three types of engines: turboprop, turbofan and jet. The latter are used especially for combat/military/supersonic aircraft. They are more powerful but much more fuel consuming. Turbofan engines, mostly used for typical airliners, are a mix of jet engines and tuboprop. Their core (compressor) is similar to a jet engine. But there is also a bypass so that only a part of the air goes through the compressor. The rest of the air is only accelerated and exhausted without going through the core. Over the years, the bypass rate have been increased so that the newer engines are less fuel consuming.
      That's part of the explanation, if there are propulsion engineers reading this, please correct me if I'm wrong and teach us!

    • @joedoakes8307
      @joedoakes8307 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      modern jet engines , operate at higher internal temps ; and , the internal compression of air and fuel burns at higher ratio's which means the air is being exhausted out of the engine at higher velocity thus generating more thrust . Also , only ~10% of the air sucked into the engine by the huge main turbine blade actually is processed all the way through the internal body of the engine ! The other 90% flows on the outside of the , smaller engine body which is where most of the thrust is developed .

    • @jacobjahr9573
      @jacobjahr9573 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Many different factors. Lighter-weight alloys and carbon composite materials used for the construction of the fan, more precise machining of the blade angles, computer controlled fuel controls to maximize efficiency of fuel flow rates based on ambient conditions and power demand, higher operating temperatures and pressures that enable more complete and clean combustion and maximize thermal energy available to be utilized by the turbine in the power section that drives the fan and compressor section.

    • @TheFlyingFrenchmanHD
      @TheFlyingFrenchmanHD  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Arthur Chapman Airbus fans are right actually. At the same position, next to the engine, the 777 is far nosier than the A350. As the A350 is a much more modern aircraft, that's easily understandable.
      The A350 is almost as quiet as the A380. A perfect plane for a comfortable flight.
      If you have the opportunity to fly the A350, use an app to measure the noise level. You'll see by yourself.

    • @raykrislianggi
      @raykrislianggi 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Arthur Chapman As a guy who have flown with the 777 over 15 times, the 777 *IS* loud, you should at least acknowledge that much. The A350 isn't louder than the 787, the distinct sound characteristic / roar gives an illusion that it's louder when picked up by camera mic.
